My buddy Jeff gave me some components to make a smoke system for my Firefly. They sat around a while before I finally got motivated to put them to use. It was worth the effort. I put together this video to help share some things I learned. SKIP TO THE END IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE THE SYSTEM IN ACTION!

Brilliant video, very helpful, thank you. I tried the PPGSmoke system, & found that it was lacking in a number of ways, firstly the lid with check valve was sticking, second the 1 litre volume is far too little for a Rotax 582 & third the pump is so under-powered that it can't even pump the fluid up to the exhaust. Not to mention that I didn't even get a reply from them when I queried the lid check valve. Waste of my hard earned cash IMHO, maybe it would be sufficient for a PPG, who knows? I've now ordered components to put a system similar to yours together. Couldn't get the Sullivan pumps here with ridiculously horrendous import duties, so have gone with a different pump, & instead of a needle valve to regulate flow I've gone with a way of regulating the pump speed. I'll report again when I have it put together! So many thanks for taking the time to put the video together, very helpful. Especially when others were saying I'd need around 4 ltrs (120fl.oz) of fuel per minute!! Looking forward to proving them wrong!

awesome vid. very informative. found you from tucker gott comments section. I'm researching and building my own system currently for my moster 185. smoke is my next mile stone. gopro was milestone 200hrs. Smoke will be added when my new exhaust reaches warranty expiration next year. I managed to get 150hrs out of a My2019 exhaust, the notorious cracked out exhaust that plagues all prior 2020 year model mosters, finally caught up to me. I've built my own injection nozzle so far from a drilled out an-4 aviation bolt that had predrilled holes both head and threads for cotter pins. The head of that bolt is going into the exhaust chamber and the shank and threads with a spacer will be on the outside. I used an indexed bit drilled size 54 to go completely thru the bolt head to tail end. Installed a clipped cotter pin jammed it in the center hole and tested with baby oil in a jar. I get a perfect split stream from the cotter pin holes on each side of the bolt head. Next I'm going to fab up or find a thin washer to bend into the streams to deflect and hopefully fan spray each stream as it exits the bolt head. I was talking with the fella Harlan who runs bad dog smokes and he was insisting I drill the hole in the exhaust very near the exhaust manifold near the head....if I were to use his injector. He didn't like the idea when I sent him a copy of your other video on the powered parachute trike where it was injecting into the muffler section. I had concerns like you mentioned here with pressure wave and engine rpm alteration during operation. He's stopped replying since. So I decided to drill the bolt and forge ahead with my own plans. So just to confirm, you recommend injection after expansion chamber or just before expansion chamber? I've not located the hole yet, still researching as mentioned....and testing. Cheers!

Definitely put the hole after expansion. You will regret it otherwise. 2 Stroke dirt bike guys do the opposite and they inject water for a “boost” of lower. I wouldn’t gamble that with anything aviation related.

@@JWolfe104 Thanks for the swift reply. Sounds like you know a thing or two about 2 strokes already. I don't know much about your Rotax447 or Kolb Firefly, I'm new to fixed wing ultralights. Is that motor fairly reliable? Would you trust it say as a weekly commuter from lets say, Lafayette LA to Galveston Tx?

@@murdockdacoon2055 The problem with the 447 is they quit making it. Mine has done nothing but pure like a kitten for 170 hours. Zero complaints. However, I monitor engine parameters closely and I have mixture control. I spent a lot of time on jet settings too. What will kill a two stroke is running too lean for long periods. Keep it in the sweet spot and it will help a lot.

@@JWolfe104 thanks for the reply. My first motor, the EOS150 was also made in Austria. I installed a remotely controlled servo on the carb attached to the H adjustment that I could manually tune via a small Pot on my throttle handle. It was super slick and worked well for xc cruise at Altitude. I don't fly that motor any more tho as it was the Model A and they didn't work all the kinks out before they mass produced it. It was actually the First one shipped to the US. We were the test bed of sorts. I have a friend in the business here who is very well connected with Parajet, Vittorazi and many others in the game...too many to list. Cheers.

Very clear and helpful video, thank you. I'm watching many videos on adding this type smoke system to a 2-cycle PARAMOTOR exhaust. I see most online videos showing an installation by tapping into the exhaust pipe very close to the cylinder head. After watching your video I'd believe your comments on location in a tuned exhaust system is wholly applicable to PPG tuned exhaust systems. But they all seem to do it. Perhaps they are not aware of the issues you identified. Do you happen to have thoughts, counsel, advice, on where to locate the injection fitting in a PPG 2-cycle motor's exhaust system.

I just finished designing a ppgsmoke.com paramotor smoke system thats similar to this. It has a 500ml flow rate (high) and produces about 2 minutes worth of smoke on a 1L container. You can size up on the fluid container for longer run time. We are also producing some injection hardware. Check it out.

Dumb question - is there a possibility of turning your exhaust into an accidental flamethrower if you install the inlet too far upstream where it is hotter?
@JWolfe104
@JWolfe104 6 жыл бұрын
Rcbif I don't think so. The hot exhaust gas is a combustion byproduct, so it contains very little oxygen, which is what you'd need to make a flame thrower. The bigger problem with mounting it further upstream is the impact to valve timing. See my comments at 5:30.

I'd mount the injection hole to the left to strike that exhaust pipe, too, but from above, so the oil hits the hot pipe and splatters to hit the walls of the outer chamber too, and dribbles around the hot pipe to vaporize. An atomizer spray tip might help too but might reduce your volume and from the videos it doesn't look like you need it.

CHOPPERGIRL's AIRWAR I did modify the injection tube to fan the spray out a bit. I don't get any liquid on the tail. As hot as the exhaust is, you almost can't mess up with the delivery system.

I used to maintain a build site but got tired of the renewal requirements. I still have all the site content. I could share the build photos with you through a cloud link or something. Just need your email address. I’m away from home for a few days, but can upload soon.

Hello, I have seen your video and I have loved your installation of a smoke system for Rotax. I have a S-4 Rans with a Rotax 503 and I want to install a system like yours, but I have some doubts: 1.- Capacity of the tank and what type of tank is, how many minutes does it have to smoke? 2.- Type of liquid to make smoke, have you tried with diesel? 3.- Type of injector used in the exhaust and where to get it or details about installation. Thank you very much for your time, greetings from Spain

Pedro M Thank you for your comments. The smoke delivery is truly impressive. Sorry for the American units of measurement. The tank is 60 fluid ounces. The pump puts out about 30 ounces per minute, so it only lasts about 2 to 2.5 minutes. There is no fluid on the tail or prop at this flow rate. The exhaust is really hot and will burn a lot of fluid!. This flow rate is about right. I have tried baby oil and professional smoke oil. I never tried diesel, but I think it would work OK. Most people mix it wth a little transmission fluid. The nozzle is nothing special. It's just 1/4" diameter steel tube. I squeezed the end a little flat to make a fan pattern. That's it. The most important thing is to leave the tube sticking out from the muffler about 3". You want the steel tube to dissipate heat before the connection to the rubber tube. If the rubber gets too hot, it will crack quickly. www.sullivanproducts.com/FuellPumpsContent.htm

Update: So basically I've pretty much copied your system! Mines on a Rotax 582 engine, & at the moment I still have gotten the proper smoke oil, so I'm running my own mix. I haven't got a decent in-flight video yet (was about to but had an unrelated coolant hose fail on climb-out), I will be getting some soon. But here is a ground test. So once again, thank you so much for making your great video! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLGpf6d9krvOcnU.html
