I always start with Robert Johnson, then move on to Buddy Guy, to Bird, to Trane and then Shorter/Hancock then late Trane,Ornete and finish with James Blood Ulmer, which kind of takes you both forward and back..

Are you kidding? This is the best usable video on blues/jazz spice ever... So easy to get from an intermediate level... I showed my dad (my first guitar teacher and certified blues man since 1975 and he almost cried)... More like this Adam.. This shizz is the most profoundly usable type flex I seen that you got... Dang mang, you connected my two first loves in one lesson... All the spicy secrets... More please

As I'm watching this I can't take my eyes off of your picking hand. There is zero tension in your hand when you hold the pick. I'm envious! The whole time I'm expecting the pick to fly out of your fingers, yet you have complete control and pull off fast runs effortlessly. It's a pleasure to watch beautiful technique like that.

This is hands down the most useful and more importantly useable blues/jazz theory video/lesson I’ve ever seen/taken… I’m so happy there is a guitar present, otherwise I would have to start telling people I play a six string bass tuned up an octave, out of sheer respect for Adam on this one… Thank god I can still say I play guitar the way Satan intended

I remember learning how to cook back in university (many decades ago I'm afraid. First time away from mom, so it was either learn or starve). And the only spices I had any clue about were salt and pepper. And then one day someone turned my on to garlic. And then Chili. And then Red Peppers. WHOA. And so the journey began, and continues to this day. But it helps to get a little push at the start to open your eyes to the fact that there is more to life than salt and pepper.

Two things: 1. Thank you for this video; it really is a topic that we all struggle with. 2. That click every time something appears on screen is crazy annoying. It’s a particular frequency that stabs right through my ear drum into my brain. A sound with less harsh attack would be fine. Bonus thing: Again, really, thanks for the video.

This is a great video and super helpful! It made me decide to subscribe to your Patreon and I've been having fun playing through the progressions. I would also love to see some content about how you come up with all the embellishments in your playing. Like even during the first level you're tossing in all kinds of additional chords, passing tones, and chord melody that makes the sound much more interesting, and I'd love to learn some tricks in that vein.

Great stuff you guys : ) BUT !!!!! Being from Chicago and as a Blues and Jazz player ; If you played all those nice changes and great licks sitting in on a real blues hit, they would politely ask you to get off the stage after one tune. I can totally understand where you're both coming from and would agree a bit with what you are both " TRYING " to relay, but blues in its raw form is simple. Max 1-4-5 . Which is why it is so hard to play correctly as jazz players will be at the bar most of the night if they took a blues hit. ( SPECIALLY DRUMMERS ) You might get away with a minor 2 sometimes specially in the Church BUT!!! add the 6 and we all start heading in a different direction. I'm with you on making it interesting and colourful but the blues is not interesting but certainly colourful in its form. It is about Pain , Sorrow , oppression but yet sometimes a lot of fun when it gets funky or a bit uptempo after coming from the bar by the second or third set. That's as far as one can go before it gets into a different genre and why jazz players created their own kind of blues. Called 2-5-1 and Remi and Courvoisier . Miles said it all. ( " It's All Blues " : ) You're both nice players Bless you both. : ). Peas to da Wurl.

Well put, they very quickly stop playing "blues" and start playing jazz on a 12 bar blues progression. More of that jazz supremacy that Neely's been letting fly more and more lately. really seems like he has a hard time viewing other styles of music as their own thing; everything gets parsed thru the lens of jazz harmony.

over the years i’ve realized blues forms such that i end up with an infinitely eclectic repertoire.. often generated on the spot it’s weird how back in the 90s this seemed like unique knowledge to me, now it seems common, but to Bird, Miles etc it was common decades before we were all born

I don't know why I never thought of this before but, when Bird wrote music, was he just writing melodies with implied harmonies, over changes in his head? Or did he play piano or something, or was usually with other musicians? Like did he write chord charts or indeed "know" the chords or was he just feeling the changes? Sorry for the long-winded question 😅
