Great job on making this kit usable. If anyone has unfortunately purchased it, perhaps they will see this and adjust it.

Paused at 6:30 to add my contents before I see yours. I'd change the compass for a button compass. Put in a lighter or at least some matches, a Whirl-Pak bag and water tabs, toss the tool card in exchange for a mirror, add a sewing needle, maybe more fishing line and a small lure, some tinder-quik, and maybe replace the whistle but maybe not. Now to see what you add :)

A few months ago I found some great uses for those multi tools. The 'saw' makes a great fiber comb for making cordage. I used a rock to pound it into an old fallen tree and pushed a stick through one of the holes then leveraged a chunk out of the tree to get at some dry wood. It was October and everything was wet, the log was pretty rotted but I did get some good tinder. I also used it to split a bunch sedimentary rocks looking for fossils. All that and I still wouldn't recommend one to anyone, but they have a tendency to multiply. I've never bought one intentionally but they always seem to come in kits and random stuff. Oh and I scratched a bunch of trail blazes into rocks. None of theese things I would do with gear I valued, but at least I got use out of one.

50 years ago there was a similar multi tool called a WalHawk. They were made in USA and good. As I recall, you could use the saw to cut a notch in a branch and then use wire to attach the tool to the branch making a small hatchet. Good video. Good Luck, Rick

At first glance, I thought that BIG compass was a Decoder Watch. I have different survival tins that I make up and I am always trading this for that. I usually get red or yellow self adhesive reflector tape and cover the outside of the lid with it. You can signal at night and somebody can perhaps find you in the dark. I always carry one or two bright colored balloons that I can blow up. They carry water but can also be used in daylight as a signal that you can be spotted from the air. I always use electrical tape to secure needles, sharp box cutter blades, matches, etc. to the inside of the lid. Things that are flat but don't put them where the bottom lip of the tin meets the inside of the top of the tin, that can prevent proper closing ability of the tin. Over the taped to the lid items, I often cut to size a piece of white board (thin) that I cover those lid items with. You can use the board to write on, help start a fire. I have used the board on the bottom as well to cover things like band aids and folded money. I carry some ear plugs and a mini Bic lighter that I wrap about twenty to thirty feet of dental floss around and secure it with tape. I have also wrapped a needle in the floss as well. I carry fold up scissors, a small folding knife, nail clippers, a strong magnet that has a small key ring attached, it's the size of a dime. I also fit a little light in like a small pen that also has a red laser pointer you activate with a separate button. I buy them at the dollar store, they are used as a play thing for your dog or cat. I like making my own kit, I have found that bought ones just never seem to add up to much. They never have the items that you require for your purposes. I like how you upgraded the kit. If that cost thirty five dollars? You can put together your own awesome kit for that kind of money.

For those of you who are putting together your own kit of just looking for budget items for hunting, camping, fishing, etc... Don't underestimate your local swap & shop. The closest of 3 to me is where I've picked up 3 Gerber multitools each been $5- & $13-; rod & reels well under $10-/ea.; ropes, twine, strings, etc... Also always available things like axes, machetes, hatchets, pruning shears, vast array of handtools, gadgets like the red plastic card, lights, headlamps, medical supplies hygiene supplies, camping equipment, rugged / outdoor clothing, all sorts of knives, etc. etc.... Sometimes things like archery, ammo, & military surplus. Best part is they are aware that they will need to haggle to sell. If they are the rare ones & don't... just walk away. 1/2 will stop you & others will wait until you come back after walking the rest of the event. Just saying, don't underestimate swap & shops.

Small signal mirrors are great when you get something in your eye. I recommend wearing clear safety glasses when walking around the woods at night lol. Also I like to buy the small bicycle inner tubes at walmart and cut them in strips and pull them tightly over my bic lighters. It makes an awesome firestarter that's always with your lighter. I'm a fan of all the esse survival kits.

the credit card tool was a perfect can opener when I went on a week long trip for both opening cans of food ( I forgot a can opener ) , and when the flimsy little striker broke for my ferro rod (really cheap thin saw blade like the one you had in this kit only less useful ) , I used the " knife edge to scrape . worked pretty well.🤔😮‍💨🙂

Hey Eric....once again, a good review! I laughed when I saw the compass! I knew that thing was gone along with the SS “tool”! Your subtractions and additions were spot on, as usual. They made what was a pretty dismal pocket kit into a serviceable kit! So, great job Eric and thanks! Looking forward to the Seventy2 review, and any in between!

Putting things in the little plastic pouches takes up space. The only thing that needed that were the meds and fishing bits. The kits didn’t used to be so wrapped up and you got more for your money, I guess it’s a way of making the tins look full without spending so much on the contents.

Something I’m not a fan of is that, a compass is not suppose to be used near metal. That compass has metal attached to it. It makes the compass give a false reading. Just my two cents lol. Thank you for sharing👍

It took adding some expensive ingredients though. The price of the Victorinox swisss card is on par with the price of the original kit. The ugly truth is that putting together a really decent kit may put the price in a range where most people turn to a cheaper product.

I'm never sure about a button compass in a survival kit, unless its military , I tend to leave them out as I'm based in the UK and if I get lost I'm really not that far from people and I'm confident in my natural navigation and I do study the area I'm going to before hand. If I were to travel further afield then I would add a compass. ( And a backup compass, and a backup backup compass) excellent video as usual I always have to reorganize my kits after your videos as I find something useful in every one! Cheers

Yeah, I'm honestly mixed about including one in this style of kit. An Army Ranger, Ranger Rick I think, who used to build & sell survival kits, made a whole video mocking the hell out of including one of these in a kit ... Yet, military spec from while ago called for the P38 to be included. And it doesn't take much space & could serve as a ferro-rod striker. I think I might prefer a piece of hacksaw blade.

That's the thing with the survival kits you get it doesn't seem to matter if you get a budget costing around £20.00 or a bigger premium one coating £100.00 that in most cases they seem like that they have been thrown together by people who spend their holidays in 5 star hotels and have never spent anytime in the woods because the kits contain A lot of stuff from unusable to useless but with some sorting out can be made into half decent survival kits that are usable base part of a larger kit

6:34 I think the SOL scout kit is better and it's $10 less. You improved it MAJORLY. I probably would've left the whistle's screw top, but mostly just because I mentally don't like to break up components. Especially liked the victorinox card, cordage, and the water stuff you added. Those "multi-tools" just all need to be melted down.

You didn't have a lot to work on that one!😂 Pretty junky kit but you rescued it a bit. The top half of the whistle doesn't seem great- it almost rolled away from you when just sitting on the table! There seems to be no practical way to dummy-cord it to anything either. Maybe best to bite the bullet and replace it altogether. Having used those "commando saws" you could 86 it and save some more room without impact the quality of the kit much. I'd never seen that Swiss Army card, I'll have to look it up.👍 Lastly it wouldn't hurt to squeeze a bit of Vaseline or Carmex into the cotton balls (not a ton, just a little dollop- it makes them burn a lot longer).

I've been carrying a 'survival kit' for over 55 years, and I've been carrying a compass, very slightly bigger I suspect, almost the same as that one for All that time. It was my Scout compass, and it's become a lucky charm. I have NEVER used it in anger, as it were, only to settle directional disputes. If I was to replace it with a button compass, which one would you recommend? Great video as per usual, all the best to you and yours 👍 👍 👍
