Yeah I WAS THERE IN 1986 ALEX HIGGINS RIP
@georgefranklin62903 жыл бұрын
Higgins had a lot of faults, but was never a player to stand there shaking his head after he'd lost the cue ball or things had gone wrong! He would just look stony faced and quickly get on with the next shot!

He was 55 here in this match with Higgins and 2 years before in 1986 was the oldest player to reach a ranking final at 53 years old when he lost 10-6 to Jimmy White in the Rothmans Grand Prix. Not sure that record will ever be beaten

That was the 1986 match between the two, not this one. Williams went on to reach the final in 86, after, coincidentally, beating Higgins in the quarter final that year.

Pretty astounding that Rex and other snooker officials thought it was okay for Rex to run snooker’s governing body, which prosecuted Alex’s scandalous behavior; comment on games involving Higgins; and play against him!

its funny how scandalised rex looks when he gets a fluke, higgins would have barely have acknowledged it, perhaps even acted like it'd been intentional!

Not really, by the time it was played there he wasn't a top player, a much better billiards player. That said, he had a revival in the late 80's and won a ranking event

Williams was a member of the top 16 86/87(16th) and 87/88(12th) and was the oldest ever player to reach a ranking final at 53 when he lost 10-6 to White in the 86 Grand Prix. He beat Higgins and Davis 5-1 on the way and the way he played that week was probably better than anything he had ever produced so I'm not sure I'd agree with that! ;-)

@alanmctavish48023 жыл бұрын
Anthony kernish all the players from the rex williams era were very slow. Like john pulman, fred davis, ray reardon, john spencer, and more. The game was going no where till alex higgins came on the scene, there was no money in it, it was so slow and boring the bbc were thincking about just taking it off the tv altogether. Becouse no one watched it really, plus most people still had black and white tv sets, so it looked even worse in 1970 becouse the commentator had to tell the tv veiewers at home when they went to play a shot they would say "and thats the brown ball hes playing, or thats the red ball" then when alex came along and won the world title at hes first attempt nobody had saw any one as fast and as good as alex he just started selling places out all over the place. Then they had to get bigger halls to play in when alex was playing and only when alex was playing just to fit in an extra 300 people. The by 1975,76 the tv veiewing had went from basicly nothing to at least a million watching at home. Then to 2 million then 3, 4, 5, 6.... Just becouse of alex and most people now had colour tv sets by 1977. And it showed alex's great dress code as well, becouse he was always the smartest dresser on the circiut, you would say to yourself thats a cracking shirt and waist coat hes wearing, then later that night he would get changed and be wearing an even better shirt and waist coat. What a guy. What a player. If alex didnt play to the crowd and played for himself like the other money mad players apart from jimmy white and ronnie osullivan, he wouldv won the world title at least 5 times becouse he won it twice and lost two finals. And wouldv won alot more other titles by far.

@@chrisbland6942 as a big fan of alex at the time his cue action had lost its flow for me. Its like he was dying in front of us. He should have won the uk champs in 1982 as well.

@@digeme69 i was at that final with hendry. Great night. But alex was not what he was. He could still win but not great snooker.
@chrisbland69423 жыл бұрын
@@darrenmcgowan3932 Quite agree. He relied more and more heavily on his shrewd tactical play as the 80's wore on. When you watch footage of him around 1980-81 when he was in full flow, he was an absolute genius. For speed, he was probably at his best pre 1973 but unfortunately not too much footage exists of him back then. Re the 82 UK - he had that match in his pocket but unfortunately, he timed his drinking wrong. By the last three frames he was a bit mashed up. Griffiths, to be fair started to cue quite well but he should've been put to bed by then.
