American actor and singer, Olurotimi Akinosho, a.k.a Rotimi sits down with Ryan, Channing and Fred for a conversation covering everything from his Nigerian roots, music, acting, and his ongoing strive for excellence.
Most recently recognized for his work playing the character, Dre, on the hit series Power, one of the most prolific shows over the past decade; the guys dive into Rotimi’s journey to this point and transformation to stardom. He opens up about his upbringing and being raised by immigrants which he attributes to the work ethic he has today. He tells the guys that his mother had a dream when she was 7 months pregnant that Bob Marley spoke to her and said, “Your son is going to finish my legacy.” This dream served as an inflection point for his future and his parents guided him towards entertainment because they believed it was his calling.
Inquiring about Rotimi's Nigerian roots and how his values impacted the
roles in his life that mean the most which is centered around family. He pays homage to his fiance', Vanessa Mdee by stating how influential African women are and their natural ability to take care of their partners. Africa serves as the motherland for POC and Rotimi suggests that everyone
visits to feel connected to their roots. Leave it up to Channing to ask about how he met his now
fiance, and to how they keep their relationship spicy!
Pivoting back to work life, Ryan asks Rotimi what are his goals moving forward which Rotimi, openly says being self-aware that music is his passion, he plans to continue to serve as a bridge from Africa to America through his music. Inspired by African musicians Burna Boy and WizKid, Rotimi's focus is to become one of the greatest talents to walk this Earth. Wrapping up the conversation, Rotimi switches into his infamous Mr. Butterscotch character that captivates his following.

The Yoruba and Igbo are not warring 'tribes'. Historically, the two ethnic groups never fought a single war against each other. Rotimi's grandparents likely had their own ethnic sentiments but those do not extend to the whole group. At worse, both ethnic groups are the major political competitors in southern Nigeria. That breeds rivalry. Resentment too. Offensive stereotypes are invented by both sides, of course. But the common people of both groups are the closest in the South of Nigeria. By the way, the Igbos are not from the village. They're a pretty progressive people too, the most adventurous definitely - the quintessential Nigerian dreamer, really. Rotimi needs to ask more questions about the source of his family's past issues.

Best podcast ever. As a 1st gen immigrant myself I completely agree with perspective of visiting the African continent and experiencing a life where you are just considered a man not a 'black man'. The world's a big place and it's possible to live a beautiful life free of the stress, 'Karens' and all the hurdles we face in America just to make it and be successful. It truly is beautiful with the people, food, places e.t.c

Like … you never know what part of himself he’s going to share as a gift. RC? Consistent. Fine. Pro-Black. Thorough on all the levels all the time. Channing? Smart but downplays that part of himself. Funny as heck. Great listener. Sex positive. Freddy Flowers? We don’t know! He might be in coach mode with a young player. Or Listening and synthesizing to help pivot the conversation.
