The Rotkee PS16 pressure transducer is a budget sensor suitable for in cylinder pressure diagnostics; but is it any good? In this video we use the PicoScope 4425A to set up a custom probe for the Rotkee PS16, and test it on a running engine. We then take a look at the waveform compared to the PicoScope WPS500 sensor to see the difference. What do you think?!

I like my Rotkee PS16, I had a machinist make an adapter M16X1.25 to 1/4" N.P.T and now I can use it on my fuel rail pressure tester. For the price it is SWEET!

I've had one of these for a year or so and found it to be very good for the price they do make a diesel one also which I do not have, I am happy with the quality of all the items I have bought from Rotkee

I have one these sensors, they don't come with the fittings, you have to buy them separately. You get the sensor & the leads. The sensor works very well & is great value for the money, especially when compared to the other two sensors you mentioned.

Nice :) I wanted to get one at some point but couldn't I had to kinda DIY my way to a transducer, turned out great :) Bought the main thing from SSI Amphenol For about 80$ and then made my own wiring power supply and voltage regulator.

Not bad it will get me by ! As a pico scope owner myself i hear alot of auto techs saying they cant afford one especially the younger bucks just starting off in the field. My reply to them is there alot of good scopes out there for a fraction of the price that will get you by and since the lower cost models dont have the automotive training wheel software they will learn to set up any scope and will be able to determine a poor reading from a good one. To me going the hard route sometimes will make you a better technician. Us old timers need the training wheel software because are memory not as good as it use to be . lol!!!!!!!!!!

Yes possibly, but you usually have jump posts in the engine bay 👍

Looks an ok tool to have , great video, I do say that a few diagnostic technicians always keep vvt plugged in , what's your view on this Darren , could be a great lesson showing vvt connected and unconnected , thanks

Cheers Rob. I usually leave VVT plugged it. It does make a difference; I’ve had a play before. I just disconnected valvetronic in this one to force throttle operation , else the waveform would look like a diesel with no vacuum pockets.

Darren, could you show a video on how to easily transfer all the automotive presets and probes from pico 7 automotive to Pico 7 TM. I currently own both pico 7 auto and 7TM but limited for now using the pico 2204a.

If you open the Auto psdata file in TM with all the probes/ math channels or whatever on it, you can save them that way. No import/export feature like PS6

Although I've never personally used a pressure transducer before, I'm just curious. Since the pressure transducer is powered by the vehicle's battery, won't any fluctuation in the battery voltage affect the sensor reading? Especially during cranking

Great question! I’ll have to do some digging/testing. I think it might have its own reference voltage circuit like we do on the engine management system ie it’s a 5V sensor. I’ll have a look

Shouldn't affect readings at all. It's very easy to design power supplies to reject interference. The comparison waveforms he showed were similar so no interference present.

To me it looks like the first dip before the exhaust opens is higher than the dip after the exhaust. I thought the two dips were supposed to be even. Am i wrong on this?🤔

Good observation. I saw this. Might be because of the fault mode; Valvetronic is disconnected in this scenario

@@Lambros_Stefaneas I can try, but to be honest, I think it disables valvetronic anyway because of the misfire fault. I’ll try it out. We just won’t see any events below zero

@MechanicMindset Maybe you can try, with the coil plug connected and grounded the secondary (so it won't set a code for circuit/coil)and disconnect or restrict the fuel supply or something else so it won't start the engine.Even if it's a strategy to disable the valvetronic, I think you can get the first couple of captures (before the valvetronic be disable from the ECU). And maybe a bonus for us,have a second channel hooked up on the scope, to see if the valvetronic is been disable from ECU?

Great question, yes it is compatible with fluids including oil and fuel. You will need the connections to T in to the system. And it can only do low pressure systems

What range would you recommend for exhaust pressure?

This won’t really be suitable you’ll want a pulse sensor, or a WPS500 that goes down to 0.35bar

@@MechanicMindset That WPS500 is out of the question. I made my pressure transducer using SSI 500psi and 300psi transducers for diesel and gasoline engines. I was thinking something that would read 0-15psi would be sufficient. Is that sensitive enough?

It’s ok, will be similar to the Ditex sensor I tested with the 2000 series. Just add a bit of vertical resolution enhancement

It does seem like a low figure; the engine speed and compression was fluctuating quite a lot during this test. The fault state might have a factor with valvetronic

Maybe it is me, but this seems like a lot of expensive hardware, and deep into the technical weeds to basically do what a simple compression test can confirm. Am I missing something? It is Making a simple test to complicated.

A few benefits from this test; we can also see the valve events, plus you can test dynamically with the engine running and identify intermittent compression issues
