Rotten door repair. I didn’t have any timber for this so made use of what was on site.

Nice repair. I would sand down the entire door now and refinish it. That would offer the best protection against rot again... Thumbs Up!

Good job, but would it not have been better to have the 45 deg. scarf joint running the opposite way to prevent any water tracking into the end grain if the glue does not hold?

Good point and it isn’t perfect. I only had access to scraps of timber so I had to do the best I could with what I had 👍🏼

A very nice and satisfying traditional joiner's repair, but if you used epoxy resin, which saturates and seals the endgrains permanently, the biscuits and scarfing would not be necessary ...just clamp the joints accurately (with plastic wrap to separate the clamps from the epoxy) and water will never enter again. Epoxy-saturated joints are stronger than the timber they join, and replace dowells, biscuits and tenons in this application. (Softwoods like pine are a different case, as they are resinous and dont have lateral veins to enable good glue penetration). Also epoxy-coat the outer faces of the new timber and under the hinge recess. A modern boatbuilders repair, and not a bodge.

Good field repair, next time the 45deg cut should slope down towards the outside so water will never run ‘into’ the door and a new weatherboard would really help.

Interesting repair. I like the contra slopes will remember that with hinge and clap. I like the bird song and the shot of flight as well. Carpentry does more listening than talking! I was told that by a boatbuilder over 40 years ago and he was right. As I don’t have biscuits I would have to use dowels.

Very impressed, no narration needed, you are a proper craftsman. I would never have thought of doing it that way, which makes sense and gives it natural strength. I have a Festool Drill which has done me proud over the last 15 years, 2 new batteries but still perfect. That saw and guide make the job so much easier, professional kit 👍well done, good entertainment and went very quick, I’ll certainly have a look at your other projects 👌

I wonder why are you unscrewed the top hinges first rather than starting at the low hinges, leaving the top hinges supporting the weight of the door. At the moment I have not seen the total video but I wonder if you will start the re-installation from the top?

Ceiling, the bottom of the door is a good cure for the problem after you have inserted a new piece of timber. However, I imagine that the cause of the rotting bottom of the door was that rainwater gets down into the bottom of the stairwell at the foot of the door and causes, the damage over a period of time. I hope the owner of the building takes some preventative steps, such as putting a drain at the bottom of the steps in the concrete pad. In Britain there is a saying an ounce of prevention is much better than a tonne of cure.
