How in the world do you use 16 pocket knives "DAILY", you carry 16 pocket knives on your person, daily? And even if you used a different one every day , that means you're only using each of them 22.8125 times a year. And out of those 22 days each , you may not even have to use you pocket knife on some of those days. So how can you honestly say they get used every day and have never failed you? I used a 1968 U.S. Camillus Military Pocket Knife for over 24 years. I carried it every time I left the house , and I have used it inside the house as well. Didn't use it every day , but it was there when I did need it. But after 24+ years I can give you an honest opinion about the knife because it was "The Only" knife I carried. ( Fantastic pocket knife by the way )

Colt and RR are the same factory. Check the Colt jumbo trapper vs the same Rough Rider plus a few other ones. Importers go to China and order whatever they want and just put their name on it but it's all the same. Here in America everybody wants a Klean kanteen stainless steel water bottle. In the UK they have exactly the same water bottle but with a different name but it's all from the same company

I wouldn't say most Case XX knives are around fifty dollars. My experience is that most are around seventy to eighty dollars, and I have one that cost a hundred and twenty dollars. But Case XX has the best steels of any slip joints made without contest. It isn't even close. Case proprietary 440C tests better under lab conditions than any other 440C used in slip joints, and Case 420HC tests better than what Buck uses. The proprietary carbon steel Case uses is a CV steel, and analysis shows it's identical to Ka-Bar, real Ka-Bar, 1095 Cro-Van, which is the best 1095 on the market. Standard 1095, which is what other knife makers use, is a very good steel, but 1095 CV is even better. A lot better. "CV" means that chromium and vanadium was added to the steel during manufacture, and this adds a tremendous amount of toughness and strength. I have a Case Trapper with Delrin scales that I bought forty-five years ago, and I've used it to death. I've probably skinned two thousand animals with that thing, and it's still going strong. This said, I still greatly prefer bone scales, even for EDC. I have several Case XX knives that are almost as old as the company, and the bone handles are still intact, even though the blades show that most of this knives have been used hard and sharpened a hundred times or more. I have a Case Stockman that I bought nearly thirty years ago. It has bone scales, and while I don't use it as a skinning knife, I've done a ton of woodcarving with it, and the bone scales look better now than when I bought it.

David, I had the same opinion as you concerning Rough Rider knives.... and to some extent, I still do. They are "inexpensive," but I wouldn't call them cheap.... as in shoddily made. They are all, for the most part, very well made. While not in the same class as a Case Bros, or Schatt & Morgan but they don't cost $100 either. IMHO, they're worth more than they cost. They're a knife made to be used.

Rough Riders are "inexpensive" not "cheap". There is a difference, you know. :)

true..today we dont keeps such things..i asked a guy not long ago..where are your grandfathers tools?..all gone..he has none ...nore ...would he want them..he will buy a cheap china made hammer..all the knives..tools..packs..and field gear his grandfather and father brought home from war..all thrown away..if it ain't new and modern...they don't want it..a shame really

Honestly, I don't buy knives for two of three generations in the future. I buy knives to use right now, and to use hard. I can also tell you I find far more Case XX knives at rummage sales and flea markets than I do Rough Rider knives. These is not you grandpa's China, and while made in China knives are inexpensive, very, very few of them are cheap. They're as well made as any knife made in America. They use the same material, and often better materials, and automation has reached the stage where fit and finish is almost automatic. So I s Walk and talk. People need to get over the idea that everything made in China or Japan is junk. This was true two or three decades ago, but it is not true today. Everyone says these knives use 440a steel, but this is technically not true. China does not use the same designations for steel the western world uses, and they have their own formulas. When a company has a knife made in china, they don't get the Western steel they ask for, they get the Chinese equivalent, which is sometimes not quite as good, and sometimes is a lot better. Chinese made 440c is actually what we would call high grade 440b. But the odd thing is that Chinese made 440a is is really a cross between western 440a, and western 40c. It's not quite as good as our 440c in abrasion resistance, but it's better than 440b in every other way, and definitely better than our 40a. This is why it comes stamped "440 stainless, rather than 440a, or 440b. It really isn't any of these steels. It's a 440 steel that belongs to China, and they're the only ones who make it. It may not be a modern crucible steel, which is wonderful stuff for many uses, but which I don't believe works well on knives, but it's still a very, very good steel, and nothing to be ashamed of using. I use a lot of knives, including Case XX and knives for other companies that often cost twice what a Case does. And I know steel. Case XX steel is the best steel out there on ordinary pocketknives. Even most of the more expensive knives don't use steel as good as what Case uses, OR as good as what Rough Rider uses. Case makes excellent, high quality knives, and with care, they will last generations, but I've seen them fall part or break when they weren't given that care. Rough Rider knives are the same way. With care, they will also last for generations because they are high quality knives, and the steel is better than many knives that cost as much as two hundred or more dollars. I have a two hundred and twenty five dollar Stockman that's made from Western 440a. This is nowhere near as good as RR steel. In fairness, RR knives do usually have one weak point, though it isn't a serious one. It's the spring pivot pin. The pin does an excellent job, and almost every pattern of RR knives has great walk and talk, but the pin is thin and flush, while higher priced knives such as case have a wider pin that's rounded and protrudes. I've never seen a RR spring pivot pin break, but over enough decades, it might. It certainly stands a better chance of breaking that a Case pin.. On the other hand, even if it does break, it takes only a few minutes to replace it, and you can probably do it yourself. And it may never break. Thinner may be fine, and RR may have accounted for the spring pressure. I just don't know. But they are quality knives, and they do use quality materials, and they do use steel that's more than good enough for any purpose. And if my kinds, grandkids, or great-grandkids don't want to keep them, I really don't care in the least. I buy knives for me, not for them.

There are knives you pass on and there are use right now knives, the Rough Riders still have their place, you don't trust most kids with high end knives, they loose, trade, break and abuse them, they're learning. Give them an RR and it's good enough to learn on and you don't need to worry when it gets dropped in a 10 foot deep latrine hole.

No. Case doesn't use 420, and neither does Rough Rider. Case uses a proprietary blend of 440c that may be the best stainless on the market for knives. It's quite a bit better than regular 440c, which is a very good steel. Rough Rider knives are stamped 440 Stainless, but I know someone who works at one of the biggest knife steel plants in China, and I've seen the spectroscopic analysis of the steel, and of Case steel, and of Buck steel, and of about four dozen other knife maker's steels. You reall can't heat treat and temper regular 420 steel very well. No matter what you do to it, you can't change what the elements are inside it, or the amounts of those elements. 420HC steel, such as Buck uses, is a good steel. The 420j2 they use in their made in China knives may or may not be good. As far as I know, it's never really been tested as a blade steel. It's always been listed as a liner steel, but it has some interesting properties, so we'll see. Heat treatment matters, and so does tempering, but neither can turn a poor steel into a good steel. All heat treatment and tempering does is make a given steel as good as that particular steel can be. Steel can contain up to nineteen elements, and it's the percentage of each element, how it's melted, when each element is added, on and on, that makes a given steel what it is. Heat treat and temper cannot add or take away a single element. Most 1095, for example, has virtually no chrome, and zero vanadium. You can heat treat and temper it to death, and it still won't have either of these elements. Case X high carbon steel, and Ka-Bar high carbon steel, both have these elements, which are expensive, and they're why the 1095CV they use is the very best on the market. Rough Rider steel is good for the same reason Case XX steel is good. They both use good steel from the start, so when they heat treat and temper it, they end up with good steel.

true it is just a good solid working knife for edc carry..i still have my grandfathers / my fathers / and the knife i was giving on my 16th birthday..all the case..great knives..but way to valuable to carry in the deep woods and swamps where they might not come back..better to loose a 15 dollar rough rider than a priceless family heirloom
