I think it looks better after you scrubbed off all that carbon. And when you showed the slide with this knife together with the camp knife, they made a handsome pair! Cheers, buddy!

I like the look of it after you scrubbed it. And I also really like their boxes. It’s almost a crime to throw them away because they’re so good looking.

Cleaning the handle before use might be the best idea. Using it for a few weeks with sweaty hands might give you the same result, but then with black fingers. A big improvement on the big R not being on the bolsters, it looks so much better now. A really nice looking barlow. Thank you Tobias.

In terms of slip joints, I've only bought GEC & Case, but might have to try this one

I wish they had more models in their carbon line, and yes the bolster does need something nice stamped into it. I work at SMKW and they have so much selection there. They have new ones coming, I talked to the designer.

Tobias I prefure 2 blades on my favourite pattern knife the nostalgic barlow I use small pen blade more keot scaple sharp big blade is general purpose as yours is carbon steel you can force a patina sticking blade in a lemon gives it rust protection too don't forget to keep magnets too i own a grandad barlow in buckshot bone real cowboy style nostalgia 👍🐾🦊🇮🇹🇺🇲

Great video. I didn't know they were still actually burning these. I always assumed that it was a chemical process that dyed the bone. I thought they were just replicating something that was done in the past. You learn something new every day.

This is tied with the buckshot bone as my favorite barlow. I do prefer single bladed ones more though. The carbon steel has taken a nice deep hazy gray patina on mine. Looks really good.

Wish it was 440C with a stronger backspring. Really like single blade Barlows.

Looks better after the wash, more natural. 👍 It may need a drop or two of mineral oil now, to prevent the bone from drying out too much. 👍 Carbon almost always trumps stainless! 👍Take care!

I bought 5 of these knives . One for me and 4 to give away as gifts . And out of them all only 1 had a straight blade . The others all had a bow to the blade . But even with that defect I think this is the best barlow made by Rough Ryder . Mostly because of how thin the blade is ground but I also like the shape of the clip blade more than their two blade barlows. Over all a good knife . Great review

I like the knife especially since it has no shield. I think I would be tempted to oil the bone or even put a coat of polyurethane on it to seal in the coloring. I would like to see the knife again after you oil it, if you do. I guess over time the oil on your skin will rub off on it a bit. The "wall" of box lids sounds cool for your knife cave.

Wonder how it would look like if they just dyed it? I like the bone on the older one (R bolster) because it's shinier; might be interested to know what you plan to do with it. Thanks Tobias!

It seems the bone is like burnt toast, left in the toaster to long. Once you remove the burned ash, makes it taste better and look better. It would be easy to color the razed white spots with brown die or just toast it until it turns brown with a flame. I think mineral oil would add to it looking better too.

I masked the metal then clear-coated the scales with Testors. It dries non-tacky, leaves no ‘coating feel’ whatsoever and now no color rubs off! Mine arrived looking more like yours did after the scrubbing and the clear coat has totally preserved it! Gave it two light coats with Matte and finished with a very light coat of Glossy to restore natural light reflectivity. Looks and feels like new and can’t even tell it was coated! As some others have commented I was mildly disappointed in the light blade pull but it’s not a big deal, I won’t be using this knife for the sort of tasks where I’d worry about the blade closing on fingers. This Barlow makes a perfect and gorgeous gent’s knife! Great review!

The light pull was a disappointment for me, but it's still a great little knife! Hopefully, SMKW will come out with a lockback version.

Now I’m not a RR expert by any means, but I really feel like the black stuff that rubs/washes off so easily was put there as an attempt to fill in those ugly lines you mentioned that are left from the laser jigging process. I have many case knives that are “toasted” and I’ve burned/toasted a few bone knives myself and I’ve never experienced any of it coming off on me. 🤷🏼‍♂️ but at a glance the cinnamon bonestag is a great looking faux stag in my opinion. I’d like to pick up a few myself, primarily the half hawk

Hi Tobias: That’s a great looking Barlow. I have a few BIG R Rough Ryders but I’ve definitely gotten tired of seeing it. Thank goodness RR is doing away with the R. That is a real deal breaker on a Barlow…..it takes over the whole knife.

Those horizontal lines in the jigging is distracting for sure, can they get rid of that too? Thanks Tobias
