Rough sailing - day one back on the ocean again - Report 19

SV Hakluyt Expeditions

Жыл бұрын

We finally get sailing again after 6 weeks of doing repairs and making modifications to Hakluyt. We didn't mind letting Mother Nature blow some of her last breaths of winter while we were tied up in a safe harbour. Our first day out however was a rough one - but it ended up being fortuitous as we discovered one of our (now) favourite anchorages. It feels great to get going again - but that first day encouraged us to ponder whether sailing in these conditions / in off seasons is fun or frightening!

I have similar fears! Often not having the benefit of local knowledge of weather patterns and currents, creates fears of forecasting whether I should leave or not. Always concerned that the boat does not drag when I am away on shore. Also the fear of breaking down in a remote area. Anxiety always kicks in for me at the beginning of a cruising season but once I get going - my fears go away. I am enjoying your videos and keep them coming. Thank you

Great video and nice to see those fears discussed. Since Jules is new to sailing and our boat is new to us, we have about the same fears, ironically I seem to have more fears than Jules does and I’ve been on the water most of my life. We took Kaya out a couple days ago for the second shakedown sail after 9 months of refit, the first shakedown was great but the second one we got hit with a squall that wasn’t forecasted and not yet knowing what the boat can and can’t handle, and Jules being new, it quickly became a stressful situation that I still keep thinking about what we could’ve done differently to ease the stress and fears. Here in the Gulf of Mexico our home area is notorious for quickly changing conditions and that along with not yet knowing the boat well enough lends to quite a bit of fears/anxiety each time we go out. I know that will get better as I know and trust the boat more but for now, it’s stressful (but still fun). Refreshing to see someone talk about these things, awesome video

Another fantastic video! You know me, I am always a fraidy cat so I’m trying to think of what wouldn’t make me afraid. 😂 I love so much how you take such good care of the dogs with the life vests and their identifying collars. Happy and safe sails! ❤️

Thank you! The dogs are our children and we make sure they enjoy the boat life. They love to explore new places. Actually when we stay a bit longer at one place we can see they get bored and want to move on. And then a new place makes them so excited ... so many new smells 😉

Haha - I had to laugh at the fear that when you come back from a hike - in these remote areas - the boat won't be there anymore. But I can imagine that I would have the same fear lol 🤣 . Great drone shots again and this place looks amazing.

The other day we came back from a hike and the anchor was dragging. Luckily we came early enough to reset the anchor. That would have been bad having the boat dragged into the rock. Will be in an upcoming video. But yes, thinking someone could steal the boat is ridiculous. 😂

Thanks so much for another great video. I especially liked that you addressed fear and anxiety. Even the best and most experienced sailors experience this. When was this video recorded? Thanks!

I noticed in an older episode you have a sea Shepard flag and in todays episode I noticed you have a WWF patch on your sail. Are you related to the marine conservation of sea life? If so, that’s great. Electric sail boat and protecting sea life. I love it. Great video guys.

Thank you! We have a Sea Shepard flag up because we love the work they are doing for the ocean and the animals. The WWF logo on the sail came with the boat as the previous owner was involved with them. We do want to bring awareness to protecting the ocean with our videos.

Losing rigging because of high winds is concerning, falling off the boat for you or Wes …..I would worry bout a serious health threat, injury, illness and no way to get to medical help….we’ll, you asked and I’m a worrier so there you have it. On a different note, how high can your drone go without losing control? Some of the shots look like it’s so far up there. I never miss an episode, stay safe…😊

Thanks for your comment! That is definitely a reason to be concerned. We never tested how high the drone can go. It looks high because it is a wide angle camera.
