They all have their own place in our universe of music, it all comes down to workflow and your personal tastes. I've had GAS (Gear acquisition Syndrome) for so long as I can remember, but Akai made it a little simpler for me as it is sort of an all-in-one unit, but I still love my Rolands, Korgs, Yamahas etc, but they end up like sound-making-machines to me...because they're real synths, but the Akai was for me a game-changer since it's actually "get-things-done" workstation if that makes sense? The keyboard quality is so-so... I use my Yamaha Montage for the master keyboard, it's just way above the rest... but it has it's own issues such as overcomplicated saving/storing routines and programming, so with all other instruments. I like Akais approach to saving, it's instant - once you make any changes, for example...you preload a bunch of instruments, you make some changes to those during your compositions...and it remembers them, no need to save each sound for your projects, it gets saved WITH the project, that's...a lot of work saved.

Awesome video man,I too am from the Korg world more.I did just get the Fantom(not Fantom O), and I am loving it. The Roland eco system is not super new to me, but it is still a learning curve. As far as sound,It is tough to say witch is "better",they both rule.The Fantom has sound transition with no drop outs too(Thankfully,I am a live player hahaha).I must say the keybed on the Nautilus is my favorite out of many synths I have owned.

Good comparison. I have all three of the workstations plus a Yamaha MODX6+. Each of them have their pros and cons as pointed out. Not sure which one I like best in the studio, as each one has been useful. That said, for gigging, the Korg is easily my favorite due to the better keybed and build quality.

Good video on comparison of the 3 workstations. I originally purchased the Akai, but didn't like the cheap feel but loved the screen and piano roll editing. I exchanged it for the Roland 06 but the damn screen was tiny and still felt cheap like the Akai. I ended up with the Nautilus as it was the only one that felt and sounded like a true musical instrument. But it loses a star for the screen response and no piano roll edit.

Great video, thorough and thoughtful! ❤ I'm an 80s synth guy myself, coming from subtractive synths. I'm trying to decide between the MPC Key 61, Nautilus or Hydrasynth (which is a different kind of beast, I know). If I get the Akai, it would be for its easy user interface, the Nautilus for the sheer quality of the sounds, and the Hydra for creating synth sounds from scratch.

Thanks. And I had the same dilemma back in March. The Nautilus was still very new to me, but I've always had atleast 2 boards, sometimes 3. At the time, akai was 1,900, the Fantom 1,600, and the Fantom wouldn't overextend me, so I got that. 3 months later, the damn akai drops to 1,500 lol. Couldn't pass it up. I haven't had a chance to sit down at them since this video until yesterday, when I quickly recorded the Enigma test. I looped the drums and bells on the akai in literally 2 minutes. Very intuitive, but ya know what? When I'm done recording, I always, 100% of the time, turn the Roland and Akai off, and just mess around with the Nautilus. Let me know what you end up getting! *Just subbed to you, trust your got on your decision. Always go with your gut. If you decide on the akai, let me know. I may be selling it. I have bad ideas going thru my head with another board 🤣

Interesting listening to a fellow keyboardist talk about these instruments. Well done. LOL on your critics, the video is free, don't complain unless they are lying about products. Been performing on keys for 55 years, yes you are correct, no one keyboard has ever done everything well, compromise is a reality. There are no standards for full sized keys as any logical thinking person would assume. I have played old Steinway pianos with thin black keys that were rounded on top, just an impossible piano to play without errors. I assume these pianos are made for men with very large diameter fingers, who would find the wide flat black key pianos impossible to play. There isn't a standard for the width and length of the white keys either, measure your octaves I bet all your keyboards are different. The connection between the mechanics of the keybed and the velocity curves is a delicate balance between the number of samples per key, the crossfade, the physical mechanics of the keys, the velocity setting, and the fine tuning of velocity some keyboards offer way beyond the soft/medium/hard touch. If you want to play the perfect balanced keybed to firmware play a Yamaha DGX-670, I own one and it is wonderful example of a piano keybed done correctly. Aftertouch, yea, we are all frustrated with this, none on the O6 either at over $1600, and if we do get AT, it is monophonic. I hope all the big hitter keyboard makers are watching Hydrosynth carefully. Although, AT not done well is worse than not having it; and having 3 or more pedal inputs can do much more than monoAT can. Displays. I own a Medeli AKx10 too, that big screen and the touch perfection; well... you had the best on the market, all others will be disappointing now. Too bad the Medeli has so many other problems that a master of keyboards can't get past for pro use, it remains a toy. I own a Korg Krome, that display is just okay, do you know if the same Krome display tech is on the Nautilus? I own the FantomO6 too, the screen is too small for working with most functions, good we have alternative methods of working the menu; the Fantom should have had a 4 channel display for the pattern sequencer, 8 channels are too small, 16 can't be used at all with fingers. Workflow: I have used all manufacturers products over the decades. The FantomO is the best compromise between menu and physical control I have ever used. The Korg menu is okay, but everything has to done through it, no 4x4 pads, no sliders, knobs, sparce. The more complex a keyboard appears on the surface, the easier/faster it is to use. Look at the Roland E-A7 arranger, every space on the panel is used up with controls, it is the best arranger on the market for pro use. Sounds: If you are a sound designer, the Fantom is your best choice. The reason I buy synths is to make my own patches, I wish I could erase all the presets, or like Korg, overwrite presets. For a creative composer presets get in my way. I never use a preset, Fantom is the quickest to get full synth control easily. Korg sounds good, as long as it is not piano, but all the pianos are bad too. Akai can only sound as good as the sample and how much control you have in editing. None of these pianos are going to be as good as the Yamaha DGX-670 or the Roland V-Piano modeled piano; none can be used as solo piano for slow deep expression. The main problem with all digital pianos is the decay rate of the sample is too fast, you can't play slow songs in solo on these Dpianos. The other problems have been pedal input is not good, sympathetic resonance has recently been added but not at all the same between models. Again, listen and play the Yamaha DGX-670 with its stand and 3pedals, it is inexpensive and the ultimate in a digital piano experience. Piano sound is highly personal, a digital piano without extensive editing is useless; we must all design our own from available editing that should have massive options. The Fantom is designed for sound transitions from scene to scene, not patch to patch. Up to 8 channels (layers) can be transitioned without a glitch and you can hold the keys down from the last scene and play over it, two scenes simultaneously (like you did with the Korg). Roland calls it [scene remain] with the option on or off must be selected.

Cool review. I'm sort of in this world and looking at all 3 of these. I have an x50, Yamaha mx88, and kromeEX73. First off, i want to say that the x50 is really fun and powerful. The dual arps are insane once you dig in. Some of the factory patches are my favorite sounds. The mx88 is my piano. I love Yamaha pianos(and Roland. I have jv2080) and the korgs not so much for solo. The problem with the mx88 is that the graded hammer action feels like tar in the keys to make you hit the lower notes harder and it is hurting my left arm. I have a real piano. The keys/hammers are all the same and you can play delicately on the low notes. So I am shopping a new piano. I know the korg touchscreen pain, especially choosing patches. I won't get a nautilus as it stands. I also would like aftertouch and I think overall, korg keybeds are sh!t. The x50 and wavestate are both trash. Actually, right now, I'm kicking around the fandom 0 and a modx+ and I will go for the 7x synth keybeds, BUT I do want aftertouch so that's why I am still sitting. I also want to try that osmose keyboard when it is available.

At minute 9 ff., the velocity sensitivity of the different devices is being evaluated. In this context, the Fantom 06 performs poorly compared to the Nautilus, as it appears that it cannot produce gentle tones. Based on my own experience with a Juno DS 61, which may have a very similar keyboard, I can say that I initially thought the same. However, much can be controlled through the touch curve or offset, and there is also an option for touch sensitivity in each tone. Did you take this into account in your evaluation, or is it primarily a comparison of the factory settings? Fortunately, workstations can be customized to suit individual preferences, even in such subjective matters.

I know I commented on this video already, but I was able to try the Pa5x recently, and to answer your question about the screen, it is capacitive like the Fantom and MPC’s. And I'm one of those that greatly admires the build quality and workmanship that went into the pa5x. Yes it has issues, and some functions still aren't available. But the build quality is fantastic. If I'm paying $5k+ for a board, I don't want it to be plastic. I want it to be substantial, if that makes sense. Now I may change my tune when I'm 65 lol

@@SpOoNmAn365 Maybe you could upload some videos regarding workflow on the Pa5x versus the other keyboards you own. I've never used an arranger in my life (unless you count Yamaha PSR keyboards from the late 90's/early 2000's as arrangers), so that will definitely be interesting. Having had some prior experience with the Kronos (thanks to a demo unit at my local Long & McQuade several years ago), I do feel fairly comfortable with the interface on Korg workstations, so I am excited to get my Nautilus.

Very informative video, thank you. However, after 25 years of playing in many professional original and cover bands, I have never needed aftertouch. Not sure why people are always complaining about aftertouch. I feel like it’s just something people jump on the bandwagon about with no real experience. Yes I’ve owned keyboards with aftertouch and I still never really used it. Maybe it’s good for certain genres of music, or that musician who skills are lacking on the actual instrument (like those who program a chord to play by pressing one key), but it’s kind of like the debate on analog versus digital synths. A lot of people jump on the analog wagon, though they’ve never owned or even heard one in person. Some state not having “aftertouch” is a dealbreaker for them. Really?
@RobAzam
@RobAzam 2 ай бұрын
@@livelove2030 my bandwagon opinion also believes you are confusing aftertouch with velocity sensitivity sometimes referred to as touch sensitivity, two different things. When you talk about heavy vs soft hands you appear to be describing velocity sensitivity not aftertouch. Aftertouch is referring to sending completely different midi parameters (like vibrato, or filter cutoff) by pressing harder on the key. It doesn't matter if you have hard or soft hands as you describe above. Hopefully this will educate you in your keyboard endeavors.

I bought a Korg Nautilus and sent it back due to a loose noisy Bb key. Regarding subtle playing, adjust the velocity sensitivity on your Roland. It’s best to learn how to go into settings and adjust to your playing. All synth keys are different in size from traditional piano and old vintage organs.
