In this video I loosely follow the instructions of how to make a round net from "Nets and Knots for Fishermen and Others". I have used a metal ring and also when I do the mesh I use the double lock method. However the single lock mesh can be found here: • Net Making - Fishing N...
Row one = 20 Loops onto the ring
Row two - Net 2 Loops on the 1st loop/mesh. Net 1 Loop on the 2nd loop/mesh. Net 2 Loops on the 3rd loop/mesh and keep doing this pattern around all 20 loops/meshes. This will make 30 loop.
Row 3 increase every 3rd loop in the same way making 40 loops.
Row 4 Increase every 4th loop to make 50 loops and so on till you have the size you desire.

This was fun. I got into paracording during the pandemic lockdown. It's led me down and interesting path of crafts with ropes and cords. Something calls me to it like preparing for the end of the world when I might have to fend for myself and these feel like real life skills. Even if I only ever make a dodgy football net for my nephew. It still feels like a life skill.

Managed to get hold of a copy of the Quinton Winch book for AU$6! Used it and this tutorial to make my first net bag today. Biggest lesson learnt: Don't use a card the same size as your needle if you don't want to be in a world of pain expanding the loops. I kind of sidestepped your advise on that one :) Survived. Thanks.

This is a great video and I thank you very much. Back in the late 70's I was fishing commercially with my girlfriend's father and he taught me to sew/repair nets but I needed a refresher as I have some glass bouys I want to hang. Your video and oratory explanation is very clear and very close to what I remember. I realize this video was made a while ago but still it serves it's purpose. Mahalo for sharing

I spent years on warships and one job that I always thought I never could do wash commercial fisherman. Life at sea was tough, but I always felt for the fishermen. I am not sure that this could work to cove a glass float. There is a book that goes into detail on how to do this............. I think it might be a book called the Marlinspike Sailor, but not 100%. I was wrong, just checked and it is in Knots for Beachcombers and Mariners by Ron Edwards. It is only 32 pages, so I would have thought not too expensive. Maybe better off getting the Library to supply you with a copy?

Spent the last 4 hours trying to get past the second row after at least 4 total restarts. I made the brilliant choice of deciding that I want a nice cast net out of the couple reels of spare mono I had lying around, so instead of practicing with twine like any sane or rational person would do, I went straight for the stretchy, almost unknottable mono, to make things even worse, the ring I found wasn't exactly round, it was a square box section, so none of the knots held and I found myself having to keep tension on the loops or they'd just untie themselves and disappear into a mess of line from the tension imparted by my hand twisting the needle as I go through the knots. MANY mistakes were made, but I learned a thing or two, and I will be trying again, just not today, my hands are tired and my head hurts and I need a nap. Excellent video though, and truly world class explanations and instructions, you made this impossibly complicated thing make some sort of sense, I can't imagine trying to read a book and do this, I was pausing the video and watching and doing exactly as you did all the way through, can't do that with a book lol Any tips on tying stronger knots to the ring? I feel like that's where my mono is slipping and causing me a world of pain, having to constantly, individually pick out each loop and tension them to ensure it's still there, and then the horror of loosing a loop and having to try and fish it out of the bird's nest of nightmares. I was thinking of supergluing it to the ring, but I don't think it'd sit still long enough for the glue to set.

Alright it's been a couple hours, gonna give it a try again, this time using some nylon twine I went and bought along with some (40) 1/4 oz egg sinkers, I'm thinking that's not enough weight for the hopefully 6ft cast net I plan on making, but I'm gonna try and find out. I'm combining your tutorial on round net building and some other cast net building videos, those aren't as good quality as this one, but one or two do explain the one missing piece of this puzzle, the braille lines. Oh and I forgot to mention earlier, I don't have a needle, so I looked at yours, traced it onto a piece of 1/4" scrap wood that I had kicking about, and cut out the shape using a dremel, after a little sanding, it's pretty great, and works really well too, I'd recommend slimming down the spike in the center, makes it easier to load the needle, but be careful not to compromise the strength of the spike. I might have to give it a nice stain if this build goes well, it would have earned a place in my workshop lol The hardest thing to find for some reason was the solid ring, I had a pair of 1" stainless rings but I was hopeful to up that to at least 2", but after 3 different hardwares and a variety store, I gave up and just started over with the 1" rings, I really hope it won't be a problem later down the line because it is a fairly integral part of the entire net that would require some particularly clever thinking to fix, just thinking about it makes me want to stop and wait until I can find a larger ring, but then I'll never find the ring and will never do the project and realize that it really didn't matter that much, gotta do it to find out.

Johnny, I see its been a year since you posted these videos but I just wanted to say thank you since I just now found them. I have been wanting to make nets for some time and finding you on KZfaq was indeed timely. Since COVID-19 struck, I've been stuck far from home in an RV with little cupboard and counter space. I found your videos on making circular nets and thus began my experiences with netting. I now have net bags for apples, oranges and onions. I have found that suspending them in a net has increased the overall time the fruits and vegetables remain good to eat. I can't remember the last time I was able to get to the bottom of an orange bag without the fruit spoiling. Thanks for the assist during a time I'm sure you didn't see coming. There are good reasons to believe in providence.

Hmmm. I got some nylon twine from online. It can’t keep a knot, it’s the most slippery stuff I’ve ever seen. Is there a key word I need to use to get twine or rope that actually knots. (Even bowline knot won’t hold, just comes undone when I release tension)

@@tritun5154 OK, that makes it a little tricky................... The name of what I use is: Coloured whipping twine 200m spool 1mm 3 ply multifilament polypropylene rigging. I do often find that gardening places do a nice selection of natural twines, this stuff is great for net making as it is extremely easy to tie and keep a knot.

20:33 Instead of getting the 3rd loop you flip it over twisting the 1st and 2nd. Then you actually grab the 20th loop and start going the other way.

I wondered how far down in the comments I would have to go before someone pointed this out. The toggle being on the back instead of the front was a dead giveaway. With trying to work around the camera, provide commentary, etc. it's easy to see how it could be missed though.

I tried this multiple times. Had to 3d print the needle because my local craft stores don’t carry them. My knots kept coming loose with two different kinds of string and the holes are two different sizes so I am going to try and come up with some different methods and pattern. Thanks for the awesome tutorial though. Definitely got me started. I’m a fisherman and trying to build myself a little cast net.

Thank you. My dad showed me how to make circular nets for crabbing. We used round wooden dowels. He made the needles from bamboo. I forgot how to do this weaving and i enjoyed relearning the technique.

I think this will work well to make a net for hanging melons on a trellis. I think after adding more loops on each layer, at some point just keep the number of loops the same. That would make a tube. It would be interesting if I could then reduce the number of loops to make a closed net ball. Then I'll need to figure out how to leave an opening in the side part way up to place the melon inside the net.

I used to carry a wee 2cm toggle that I made using bakery twine and some Sculpy clay. It was stamped with a dwarf head, and looked neat. It got over my toe, and I could get a ring started easily. Then just keep netting until I had the right-sized bag for apple picking. The carrying handles were essentially woven lanyards from the same twine. Yes, I always carried a pen knife, matches, twine, bandaids, a fish hook, and a dime when I was a kid.

Very good videos. Thanks for going to the trouble of producing them. I'm making a round fishing dip net now. I want one that is a cylinder about 2' dia. x 2' deep rather than a funnel shape. I didn't think it through. I made double loops on row 2, 3, and 4 instead of something like 2, 5, and 8. It'll work, but the bottom looks more like a basket than a net, and I've ended up tying about a thousand more knots than required.

Hi Johnny D; I have made more hammocks than I have fingers and toes, I found that using a double knot I never have a slip knot in the web and when casting on another loop single knot is sufficient with no slip and less bulk in the knots. I don't have the patience for all the camera work, but I like working knots with a practical, if sometimes somewhat obscure purpose, like baggywrincle. :}

It is easier to use a round wooden ball with a hole thru it, it is easier to handle the loops and keeps everything straight.

put your twine spool on a paper towel holder (the dowel type that sits on the counter not the "c" type that screws to a wall) for dispensing while loading the needle :). or sit on the toilet and put the spool on the "TP" holder :)

Haven't started yet( other than making paracord bracelets), right now just a string nut.(string, rope, etc.) Actually just ordered my first set of needles yesterday so I can start practicing, I want to make a cargo net out of paracord for the truck, a phone cover/purse so my wife can hang her phone around her neck like she asked for years ago and we'll see where it goes from there :)

Why are there two different sizes of mesh holes? The double loops have much smaller mesh sizes alternating with much larger mesh sizes. Very visible at 23:38

@20:56, when starting the fourth loop of the second row by grabbing the third loop of the first row, didn't you grab the wrong loop? The whole thing flipped over, and instead of grabbing #3, you grabbed #20.

so, first off, thank you for your videos, you exlain your knots much better than any of the the videos that I watched on the subject. I started off wanting to make a cast net, but it kind of morphed into me making a hammock and plan on making my cast net once I get some more practice... However, I have some some questions that I need some help with. The twine I am using slips really easy, so all of my splice knots have been blood knots (instead of just splicing at a pre-exising knot), so essentially I should only have loose ends at the ends of the hammock that I will further support with maybe some heat to fuse the nylon and/or some super glue after some experimentation... That said, I would like to know if there is a less bulky knot that you could suggest. Also, I am going to have to place narrowers at the other end (once I get there), which seems pretty straight forward, but I do have a slight concern about how I will attach the ring on the other end. Do you have any tips on that?

Hello Russell, this is where I get my netting stuff from, there are links to the various shops: igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-beginners/ when it comes to the net gauge, it all depends on what size mesh you need. I find that a credit card is the same size as those shown in the video. I have also seen it done with different thicknesses of dowel.

If you just continue going round you don’t need to cut your cord then attach it to the toggle (which is more faf than you need) and just increase continuously till your needle is finished!

if you don't have a netting needle: Layout about 8 loops of cord the length of the needle you'd feel comfortable using. (the longer it is the more cord you can use on a narrow starting loop.) holding these loops firmly in one hand you are going to bring the cord down about an inch and start wrapping the cord as tightly as possible around the loops until you reach the other end, where you will continue the wrap back over the first tight wrap, back and forth until you reach a point where it would be too thick to pass through your starter loop for the net. essentially you are making a long narrow spool. Hope i explained this well enough

Hi there Johnny , i need your advice for the best possible twine that will last me a very long time , i plan to make my self a keeper net = its what you place fish in while your fishing with the intent to release back into the water at the end of the day , also i will be making a very large landing net , it will also be used to scoop up anything up to a 25 kilo fish , there is so called twine made in India and China , some of the stuff is called polypropylene , some polyethylene and some simply nylon , i will not be looking at monofilament because it is basically fishing line and i know it has a small lifespan , any advice will be at the very least a start because i know nothing about netting materials etc , thank you for your time and your answer

I also think about these issues, as to what I would use if I was making a net for long-term use. I am currently messing about with Size 12 tarred line ( amzn.to/2L4GO0g ) I originally bought this at whipping twine and really enjoyed working with it. I did expect it to be a little bit too stiff for net making, but I have to say I am pleased with the results I am getting. I did a long time ago ask why synthetic line is tarred? I was told that it offered additional protection especially from UV. This photo goo.gl/fE5ZfK shows a hammock made from tarred line, but slightly thicker than the size 12 above.

Johnny Debt, I used your square net vid. to make a landing net. Now I want to put a flat bottom on it . I'm looking at your round net and the mesh just looks to big. Do you have any ideas? Thought tomorrow I would go out and make a real small shuttle and gave but from what I've already tried it's going to have to be tiney.

The size of the knot board or knot gauge will determine the size of the mesh. You then need to ensure that the netting needle will then fit through your desired size of mesh that you are creating. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

I’ve tried this a few times using nylon masons twine. When casting on to the ring, as soon as I remove loops from the card, they collapse. Is there an alternative hitch to the one shown?

Slow feed round, hay net. I also like the big square, slow feed nets for horses. I want to stuff several flakes of hay to kept them nibbling all night, if they wish. I love the horz slow feed nets sold by Chick's online. It's a big, square net I hang in their stalls & outside the stalls. I'm wondering, though, what kind of fiber to use for this kind of bag? Soft enough for their muzzles yet strong enough to take a beating from 1,000 pound animals lol! Love your videos, thank you for inspiring!

@@KnottingKnots That's a very good thought, but they use a thicker fiber , cotton rope. I've noticed that some nets have this coating on them, too.. It hasn't presented a problem in the years I've used these nets. Haybale twines are always a worry- them ingesting those. Balers sometime don't work right & cut twines inside the bales. I'm always looking for those before I stuff the hay nets. 👍

There was a group of fellows in the U.K. who invented hay bale twine that was much safer - it actually dissolved when wet. Animals can die because it gets caught in their G I. Tract. It's always a worry. I always tear up flakes of hay looking for twines, like I said. Unfortunately, this safer imvention hadn't gone to market. It would certainly help save lives. I want to say it's made out of vegetables & fruits & sugar, like bananas...but it's still not in production. Horze stay put slow feeder net by Chick's - if u Google it- this is what I use. It'd be cool if I could figure out how to make them. They aren't expensive- but what a neat, old world skill to learn! You can Google other slow feed nets for horses & see what's out there.

If I recall correctly, I was sent it by a game supply company called Fourteenacre. I believe it is Spun Poly 500g. Hope that helps?

@@americancajun6085 I have this happen sometimes and it boils down to the netting twine that I am using (a little shiny and slippery) What I do in this case is; make up a mixture of PVA glue and water 50/50, then brush some onto the knots. I find that this does sort the problem out for me. Alternatively you could make up a ring using a rougher type of rope.

Oh, I wish there was an easy answer to that. My personal experience with net making, only goes as far as making nets for my own needs. None of those needs are fishing. The board that I use is the size that is used for making purse nets, in other words the mesh prevents a small rabbit from escaping. If you want I can give you the size of my board?
