Great vid, I have been running a 32 oval for 2 years and find I am less fatigued on long rides and climbs, pedalling is much smoother, I have that little extra power to clear obstacles on techy climbs and my knees do not hurt anymore. I cover around 6,000 miles a year and many thousands of feet of climbing and the oval does deffo help me at 54 yes old.

I have one for over two years and it’s great the difference in fatigue can make you go further and it doesn’t wear if you clean your drivetrain and lube it well.

Thank you for letting me know - it’s great to have a longer term opinion 😊 Definitely think it helps to reduce fatigue 😊

Interesting because a lot of people say the oval puts less stress on their knees and smooths out the power application.

I have noticed different people find different results. This is the difference I have noticed 😊 hopefully useful but I’m not saying everyone will feel exactly what I have

It does put less strain on the knees. I can promise this I am 270 lbs and 65 years old with really bad knees. I really feel the benefit. I also feel i get better traction when riding in the winter on climbs. The mistake I see people make is jumping up to many teeth. I have played with several combos I find that whatever round ring you ride stay the same tooth count or up two at the most. I settled on a 32 oval and really like it. i am running a 1x11

i am considering an oval for climbing , then i had this thought , it'll make the deadspots easier to power through, but the power spots even harder to pedal.

Hello, yes - it effectively increases the gearing when your legs are at their strongest and decreases the gearing when your legs are at their weakest. I hope this helps

@@JakeBrookesBiking hey dude I just installed it on my Santa Cruz nomad 5....it feels exactly like a round ring, my mechanic says it's the rear suspension linkage equaling out that pulsing feeling , amazing 😍

@@JakeBrookesBiking finally took it out for a proper ride on the santacruz nomad , it felt very positive riding on the flats , like a stronger more efficient feeling ? i can't really describe it, but very good feeling. i can feel a very little "ease up " of the pedal pressure on every revolution , especially on gears 2/12 and 3/12. On the trails there are 3 climbs i very often fail, this time round i cleared 2/3 of them, the last one being a steeper techinical rock climb my legs were just not strong enough , but i am very very happy to say i did not have any spin outs on that ride, i will say that's money well spent !

@@rinky_dinky Thank you very much for this! It’s great to know you and enjoying riding with the oval. It is a different feeling and a little strange at first but it easy to get used to 😊 I’m glad it is helping you on those technical climbs. Money well spent indeed 😊

Nice comparison, thanks. In the early days of MTB Bridgestone and Fugi both had models with Biopace (oval) stock:) I rode both these and they were very hard to ride.

😊 Thank you very much! I hope you found it useful. I think the theory and research has come on a little since the older ovals. From my understanding the biggest change has been the timing of the oval / orientation. But I may be wrong.

I ran an oval Shimano on my old steel MTB (originally with 10speed style forks)... yes about 30 years ago... i was a Mediocre MTB rider then, and aren't much better now... but back then I definitely noticed a big improvement on climbs (ok mainly road back then... but on a steel frame hills are killer. Just before Covid I took up DH and got a Giant Faith that is not designed to be ridden uphill (and isn't all that great on the flat). Here's hoping I can get an oval to fit my bolt on Raceface cranks... and I'll make my chain guide work (as it is a full enclosure rather than a U section.

Hello, thank you very much for sharing this. It’s great to hear other peoples experiences with using an oval. Have you found one to fit your race face cranks yet? Interested to see if it works with your chain guide, I fear it may catch.

@@JakeBrookesBiking BTW I also used to ride clips.. as in straps.. Got good at popping my feet out even to be able to OTB on a field on purpose (too old 4 that now). Using the different muscles lifting the back pedal on the same oval sprocket bike was neat on climbs.

Don't know what the logic is behind ovals not being better for loose/technical climbing. It's widely reported (have ridden ovals for maybe 7 years now) that the place where ovals shine over round is at low speed traction poor conditions as (to borrow your metaphor, same as with braking smoothly, the oval smooths out the power spikes = the power is consistent = you don't break traction as much). The knees thing is also odd - you're amongst the minority. Have heard of dozens of people who have lessened knee pain.

Hello, thank you for your comment 😊 (so sorry about the slow reply) For me I found the oval created a pulsing sensation and a more on/off power feeing. Which isn’t good for traction. The difference between the flat spots on my pedal stroke and the power feels bigger due to how the oval works. However it seems some riders agree with this and some don’t. The one thing I do think though is the oval increases pedal efficiency which in turn will mean a rider is using less energy and therefore they have more energy to use on the ups and technical sections. I was a little surprised with the knee thing and yes I do seem to be amongst the minority. I may try one again in the future but at the moment I’m happy on a round chainring 😊

Great vid, very informative & professional. Interesting to hear it effects your knees as that the reason I'm considering it. My knees are fubared. Did u have to change the length of your chain when fitting it?

Hello, thank you very much, I really appreciate the feedback. Some people seem to find it helps their knees, but for me it didn’t. No I did not change the chain length or anything for that matter, I only changed the chainring 😊

The crank length and axis remains the same you can call me a muppet or whatever but when you look into the science behind the oval the sample size and seriousness of studies makes you think quite a bit, I own two different style oval from two prominent manufacturers and honestly I can't say I've felt any improvements, not awkward but absolutely not better, you know seems fishy thay every influencer is talking about "feeling", it doesn't come standard on any bike and racing success are abismal at best after decades on the market 💀
@JakeBrookesBiking
@JakeBrookesBiking 7 ай бұрын
Hello 👋 Thank you for your comment, I’m certainly not going to call you a muppet 😊 Results do seem to differ from rider to rider. However most people do not have lab conditions and do not track their rides to the point where they can see any scientific evidence for either an improvement in performance or not. So I think this may be why most people refer to “feeling”. Just like I have in this video and like you have mentioned above. I don’t think there is a significant difference with an oval. Otherwise everyone would be using them and they would be standard on new bikes. Maybe in the future this will change. However at the moment, I still prefer a round chainring 😊

@JakeBrookesBiking

There isn’t really a right and wrong to this, so I don’t really want to tell you which size to get... I used the same size oval as a standard round chainring but I think I maybe could have got away with one size bigger when using an oval as I found myself in a higher gear all the time. A slightly larger chainring would have dropped me in the same gear in certain situations as I would have been when using a round chainring. A lot of people use one size bigger when using an oval. If you decide to go one size bigger, make sure your frame has space to do this to avoid causing any damage 😊 I hope this helps 😊

I tell most stay with the same count it will work great. You can get away with a 34 oval and it will feel about the same as 32 round. A 32 oval will actually feel a bit easier to pedal than the 32 round.
