Squares take longer, but the paintings look more finished. I like that they look like mosaics.

Thank you for the great comparison. being slightly ocd - I prefer the square as they do look more finished. but also enjoy rounds and they are also lovely. the math is as follows: 20x25cm = 500 cm total area. square is approx 16 drills per 1cm sq and round is approx 12.25 drills per 1cm sq. Square = 8,000 drills total vs Round = 6,125 total . just in case some one is curious about it. Thanks again Rachel ;-)

To me the square looks more vivid in color, but looks like im looking at 3d without the glasses... while the round is more muted it appears more cohesive

I have ordered my first diamond painting and it is a round drill. I.didn't know there was a difference between round and square and I got worried. But seeing these two I know i prefer more muted look so the round will make me very happy. This is like the difference between watercolor paintings versus acrylic. Thanks for the comparison !

It is good to start with round, and gain some experience and knowledge of tricks to make the painting better. As an experienced diamond painter, Ive done more than 30. The square is more challenging and can be frustrating at times. The frustration stems from crooked rows, caused by uneven pieces, and nubs. Diamond painting is definitely a get what you pay for craft. If you buy a cheap painting you get cheap. I prefer Diamond Dotz, Diamond Art Club and Dreamer Designs paintings. They are all high quality, poured glue, great drills, and the artwork is licensed giving the artists the money they deserve. They aLways have good sales, online and in craft stores.

Thank you Rachel. I am newer to this craft and I found your explanation of the differences you get in the final outcome depending upon whether you used round or square to be very helpful. Up to this point, all I had known to consider is the gaps you get with round vs square. It is good to know that you need to go up in size (canvas) if you want as much detail/depth from round drills as you can get from a smaller canvas with square drills. Great video. Thanks again.

I find squares more frustrating because a lot of mine pop. BUT I prefer it because its so much more satisfying and is so flush without gaps, I just find it more fun haha so I guess I'll deal with the popping drills.

That's such an abstract image ! If I had not seen the printed image I would not have any idea what those were! I'd think I saw some leaves....maybe a butterfly on the square one. So to me this really shows 1 large DP is better than 2 small ! Especially if you are on a limited budget! get something you'll get some real satisfaction out of..great points throughout Rachel...another good video! thanks!

Very cool to see a side by side comparison, thanks! I started with a few square drill ones, but am currently doing a round one and I like it as well. Kinda nice to be able to make it faster. I think I slightly prefer square. I watched one of your videos for tips before I started and your tip about the checkerboard pattern was great - I love that clicking sound too :)

It's a shame that the round painting had duller colors than the square painting to start with, because when you add in the resolution from the size of the diamonds, it makes a huge difference. It's too bad they didn't both have the exact same colors for a more fair comparison. I just ordered my first diamond paintings on Amazon and am excited to get started :-).

im late, but im just about finished with my second painting, which is a round drill painting. i have eyesight problems and am yet to get glasses, so round is so much easier because you dont have to be too exact! although square looks more finished, round is so much easier and beginner friendly. :)

Thank you for this comparison. I wondered what the differences were. It seems as though the round is more pixelated. You are right, the square drills have more depth and variety of shading. They appear to have the same edges and yet the round one seems larger and darker. I haven’t done a square drill, yet, but want to try it. Perhaps on the projects I want to display. Round will be for fun. I have become addicted this summer.

I have the popped up lines too because of bubbles. It's an Ever Moment even. I like the look of the squares better. Thank you for the tip on getting the tabs off the drills. I was wondering about that myself. I seem to have a lot of them!

I think Sam Studio covered getting rid of bubbles in one of her videos. She took a razor blade and sliced thru it without cutting the canvas. I've tried it a couple of times with good results!

I had the same kinda thing with different colours on the same chart from the same company and they were both square. Its interesting to see such obvious difference between the two shapes.

Hi, Rachel Rae! I am a very, very new beginner and am intending to become obsessed with diamond art painting. I am wondering, in reference to the drills/diamonds popping up/out of place in the diamond art painting, if you can iron the painting to prevent the drills/diamonds from popping up? Is ironing the paintings an okay practice that is not damaging to the artwork? Thank you!!

Im getting into diamond painting with my first kit coming in just a few short days! I also ordered a few more just because I Couldn't help myself. And needless to say there's a growing wishlist on my part of additional ones I wish to get in the future. All the ones I have coming so far are round, but I definitely think I'm going to get a square one next so that by then I would have already gotten accustomed to the whole process of everything and it would be a nice adjustment. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in the two now more than ever!

Hi I begun with rounds. I've made couple with rounds and I was delighted. I've tried a model on squares, wasn't available in round and I was disappointed because off the time. I must admit squares looks better then rounds but I don't have the time and the nerves to work squares very soon.

Just finished a 110 x 70 cm Green Peacock in round, and the detail is amazing ... so if using rounds Rachel is right go bigger. I'm also doing a 50 x 50 cm Hedgehog in square - a lot more labour intensive, but the detail for the size is amazing. So you can afford to go slightly smaller with square. I prefer square - but you need more patience. Oh I work in a headstone shop - so I use our sample granite to weight it in between seasons (I do a couple at work) ... and I use firm hold hairspray to firm them up - no popping - so far. (I use hairspray for my pencil portraits to seal them) Hairspray does not seem to lose the sparkle.

i haven't received my first painting yet, but from what i've heard from other creators on here, is to get square cause it looks more finished. and omg they were so right. i'm so glad i got squares and not rounds. it looks a lot clearer and you can see the details better than the round ones even though it's a smaller painting. thank you for this!

I'm very new to diamond painting, I'm in the beginning stages of my first painting. I really appreciate this video. I got mine from VizuArts and I'm happy with it, but they did use round drills. I've decided that I like squares drills better. Where can I purchase some more diamond paintings that can guarantee the use of square drills?

The butterfly looks more like another flower to me on both pics, but it still works with the look. The colors of the square is much better. But I like the way the lines of the rounds are on the petals and leaves vs the squares. I think from this demo you have proven me that I want round for things with the detailed lines in the larger sizes. This was so helpful. Thank you.

Two questions: what do you do with all your completed diamond paintings and have you heard of, or used, a pen that you can load with multiple drills in the barrel? I know there are pens with ends that can hold multiple diamonds but I'm talking about a pen where the drills can feed through the barrel to the nib for application. Does that make sense?
