Depends who you ask. I saw a poll (guitar world magazine I believe) who ranked him as 2nd best in the world. But then others like myself would say Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult), Paul Kossoff (Free), Glenn Buxton (Alice Cooper), and Vivian Campbell (Dio/Def Leppard) are underrated more so than Lifeson.
@rsd338
@rsd338 8 жыл бұрын
wow thats an honor ...no way to "rate" talent like this ...consistency regarding live performances vs sloppiness has to be a factor as cant hide live mistakes to well trained ear but then you had greats that were always high playing live that made their rep suffer like hendrix and page when we know they are genius and three piece bands without a 2nd guitarist to free up greats like schenker (ufo), hendrix, etc...that's another factor that makes lifeson so great...he performs consistently outstanding live without a 2nd guitarist as does tony iommi ..(although they both have two of the greatest bass guitarist around with geddy and gezzer)

brien berry Even still, I agree with the OP. They are a legendary band that should be compared right up there with some of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth. It’s a shame that they never achieved the level of super-stardom that they deserved, but even still I’m sure they’re quite happy with the way they are now😂 such a down to earth trio. Favorite band ever, with no possible exceptions.

I so totally agree - in spades!!! Why? In my opinion, their music was not mainstream rock, but more progressive rock that didn't really catch on, on to the standard hard rock radio stations back in the day, with the exception of a couple of their 'radio-friendly' hits. Thank God for their massive international cult following though, that ensured they NEVER remained irrelevant.

It was this very song( Working Man) that a DJ decided to play from an un signed band called Rush. Working man was the first 'real' song i ever learned , by real I mean that it wasn't in a beginners book like hot cross buns or some shit . Alex Lifeson is my earliest influence besides George Harrison and he (Alex) totally shaped my sound, style and phrasing . Lol I think your math is off dude or you don't know how old you are lol 🤣😂🤣

@chrischamberlain2168
@chrischamberlain2168 3 жыл бұрын
@@toddkorbusieski111 how do you define talent? I have heard the three members of Rush described as virtuosos and I would not dispute that. However, to me, rock music is more than just technical ability. If we are talking just technical ability, then Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen are all technically better guitarists then Lifeson. However, there music does nothing for me. My favourite band are The Beatles and they were not virtuosos but wrote a lot of classic songs. My friend is a massive fan of Rush but I can’t get past Geddy Lee’s voice. To Rush fans, they are a great band but I prefer Led Zeppelin whose influence far surpasses Rush. Jimi Hendrix had a recording career of four years and he is a legend due to the amount of classic songs he recorded in that short space of time. Would Rush be remembered if they were around for four years?
@toddkorbusieski111
@toddkorbusieski111 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrischamberlain2168 You bring up many valid points that I wholeheartedly agree with. I too love the Beatles as I grew up with them and think folks like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Doors and Animals had huge influences on rock music. If Rush just had 4 years they probably would not but that is part of what makes them so great. They lasted as a band and friends for 40 years without any of the drama that you see from almost every other band. Longevity and selling out arenas also counts and they did that throughout their career. At its most basic though I just love the lyrics and the music which for any band is purely subjective. Good talking to you. Have a great Holiday.

When he did the cover of Crossroads for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I thought his voice fit in wonderfully with it. I know that his voice now had to adjust and compensate for many of their older songs since he's older. The last couple of albums they did were great cause they worked around how his voice changed. If there's a strength this band had, it was adjusting their music to the times in the right way (and that includes Geddy's voice changing). Now, 2016, they are retiring from touring :-( . The guys are in their 60s and Neil's definitely feeling the wear. I think it is a sound choice to make. These guys have done what they love for nearly 50 years (1968 was the year Rush was conceived), and have gotten successful enough from it to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. They leave behind a great legacy to rock music and a wonderful catalog. For a fun little segue, I wonder if Krieger will address the retirement in the next season of Archer...
