"What a Wonderful World" [1970 Spoken Introduction Version] along with Oliver Nelson's Orchestra is a song written by Bob Thiele (as George Douglas) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1967. Thiele and Weiss were both prominent in the music world (Thiele as a producer and Weiss as a composer/performer). Armstrong's recording was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Intended as an antidote for the increasingly racially and politically charged climate of everyday life in the United States, the song also has a hopeful, optimistic tone with regard to the future, with reference to babies being born into the world and having much to look forward to. The song was initially offered to Tony Bennett, who turned it down. Thereafter, it was offered to Louis Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 -- July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance. With his instantly recognizable gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also skilled at scat singing (vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics).
Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong's influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general. Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to "cross over", whose skin color was secondary to his music in an America that was severely racially divided. He rarely publicly politicized his race, often to the dismay of fellow African-Americans, but took a well-publicized stand for desegregation during the Little Rock Crisis. His artistry and personality allowed him socially acceptable access to the upper echelons of American society that were highly restricted for a black man.
Armstrong died of a heart attack in his sleep on July 6, 1971 at the age of 69, 11 months after playing a famous show at the Waldorf-Astoria's Empire Room. He was residing in Corona, Queens, New York City, at the time of his death. He was interred in Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, in Queens, New York City. His honorary pallbearers included Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Pearl Bailey, Count Basie, Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Ed Sullivan, Earl Wilson, Alan King, Johnny Carson and David Frost. Peggy Lee sang The Lord's Prayer at the services while Al Hibbler sang "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" and Fred Robbins, a long-time friend, gave the eulogy.
Armstrong was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972 by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy's National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. Recordings of Armstrong were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old, and that have "qualitative or historical significance."
"Some of you young folks been saying to me
" Hey Pops, what you mean 'What a wonderful world'?
How about all them wars all over the place?
You call them wonderful?
And how about hunger and pollution?
That ain't so wonderful either."
Well how about listening to old Pops for a minute.
Seems to me, it aint the world that's so bad
but what we're doin' to it.
And all I'm saying is see what a wonderful world
It would be if only we'd give it a chance.
Love baby, love. That's the secret, yeah.
If lots more of us loved each other
we'd solve lots more problems.
And then this world would be gasser.
That's wha' ol' Pops keeps saying."
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom, for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces, of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, sayin', "How do you do?"
They're really sayin', "I love you"
I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more, than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Oh yeah!

my sweet husband, God rest his soul, would turn this on and cry. His heart was so HUGE...so I bought him a plaque with this saying, "oh what a wonderful world" and hung it over his computer desk. He passed away this past February and now the sign is in my bathroom, where I see it every single day and remember how Rob made his corner of the world beautiful. Thank you, Lord for sending me that most wonderful man! Rest in peace, Robbie, till we meet again--I love you so much, always...and forever.

i remember when i was around 8-10 years old, my dad, may he rest in peace, used to play this song and sing along to it everytime he took us to school or anywhere were it was just me and him. He died august 2023 when i was 14 because of a 2 year long excruciating infection in the bottom of his foot. He was a type 1 diabetic. I just recently remembered this song and now i listen to it all the time. It brings me so much comfort and i always cry everytime i listen to it. I still feel his arms wrapping around me when times are hard and how i used to lay on his chest and listen to his heartbeat. God, i miss you so much baba. I hate not having you here anymore. Hopefully we will meet again soon. I love you forever.

Louis Armstrong was in fact adopted by the Jewish Karnofsky family and they bought him his first instrument that led him to sing and create such wonderful songs. If you look at his songs you will notice they have a very Jewish feel to them, for instance "Go Down Moses", "Saint James Infirmary" this song "What a Wonderful World". What many forget is that both Jews and black people were very discriminated against and a Jewish family took him in when he was 7 years old. He even wrote a book about his Jewish family that adopted him in 1907 and he spoke Yiddish. He even wore the star of David until the day he died.

To go through what he went through, and still come out of it with that optimissim is so insperational. Reminds me of Anne Frank's quote "In spite of all that I have been through,I still believe people are basically good".. If everyone kept that attitude, there wouldn't be the political diverseness on both sides...we could actually all come together and start making that wonderful world by healing our planet.

@@Aivottaja His new “Master of Modernism “ biography. When he and his band were playing Chicago circuits in the 20s and 30s, the cops there had a reputation for being particularly brutal towards black citizens. On one occasion, he was almost arrested for sitting near a white music executive’s wife and discussing business with her on a bus. He and his band had a rough time early on, yet Louis remained reluctant to even speak out towards racism for most of his life. He was just a musical genius of a generation who invented styles and improvs that changed jazz forever.

This was played at my Aunts funeral. She was an amazing woman. Married her true soulmate. Her two oldest sons were in attendance at my parents wedding. She outlived both parents, husband, and two siblings if not all 3. Came from the poorest / humblest backgrounds, and yet always seemed to have a smile to offer. I do wish that I had spent more time with her while I had the opportunity, but my father, her brother passed away when I was only 17. She knew that he wanted bigger / better things in life than what he had in his own, and off into the world I wandered. She’s with my Uncle, my Dad, her parents, and numerous other relatives that she so fondly remembered. Life wouldn’t have been the same without Barbara Jean, and she did make it A Wonderful World 💖

My Dad died this past June from stage 4 lung cancer. It was his 3rd time with this battle, and he overcame a brain aneursym 10 years ago, as well. He loved God, the Land, Fishing, People, Nature, and the Beauty of the World!! This song definately reminds me of his Essence❤🎊 I'm 40 years old, and this year is my first Birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years' without him in the flesh. He's still here though. Him & my Mom were married for 51 years. He fought for his life, and transitioned at 71🕊💜🕊 I'm so thankful for him, and even cussing me out every now and then❤😂

My daughter loved this song, she was born in 1973 and passed away in 2012 due to a car accident. Our family used this song along with Garth Brooks "The Dance" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" along with a video slide of photos of her growing up! She loved and left 3 handsome boys that are now young men that listen to theses songs and think of their mom. I miss her smiles and giggles 😔. Rest my sweet baby, see you someday soon😘

I lost my daughter in 72, she'd be 49 this year, and not a day goes by I don't think of her. Her favorite song was Jesus loves the little children. I wonder what she would look like, how she'd laugh, what she might have become. Mostly I wonder what it would be like to hold her, to share with her. It never goes away. I know your loss and feel for your heart ache. Much Love to you and yours.

I met a cancer survivor once. She defeated leukemia twice in a decade long battle. I saw in her eyes the happiness that brings by just being able to see this beautiful world again. Thats what she told me, to be grateful for every breath of air you take because when you are told you wont live for that long thats when you start missing the real beauty in this world. I only got to speak to her for a small period but she really showed me a new perspective on life. I try to appreciate everything and everyone around me even in tough times. I know i will die someday but till then im living my life to the fullest. You should too.

we rw I wonder why we realize what we have only after we loose it or are about to loose it. There's that famous saying 'you know what you've had only once it's gone'. So live everyday like it's gone because one day it will be. I hear you we rw.

Crying in my room at 3am because of how amazing this song is? Definitely. This song always makes me tear up a bit. It makes me remember, no matter how awful things get, we'll always have a wonderful world to live in. Thank you Louis Armstrong for this absolute masterpiece of a song.

@@kitocerra and crying in my room. This is exactly what this song dose to me. Every time I hear it, I can't sing along, because I am crying joy, to such an emotional song. It can't be helped. I remember him on TV, when I was a teenager how pure and honest he sounded. I was in to rock, living in the San Francisco Bay area, I didn't realy listen to pop that much, maybe a little Johnny Cash, for his honesty in country music. But Louis broke down all the walls. It didn't matter if it was pop, but, it was refreshing and honest. Now everyone can see him on u tube and everyone who has a heart ❤, can see him, and listen to the words, of Its A Wonderful World 🌎. The more people that here it, is the chance that it can break down the hate into love. Love is the answer. Dave In Sierra Vista AZ
