ℹ️ About the Episode
In this week's episode, we make our way through Illinois on the Mother Road. We stop to see more giants and the old stomping grounds of Abe Lincoln. Some of the feedback we got last week was to use a paper map. Candidly, we wish we would have thought of that! It would have made for even funnier drama. That said, with over 1,000 miles of the ribboned road under our belts, a paper map would have been pretty tough to manage. But the historical signs are very helpful. It's funny how we tend not to appreciate history in the making. Over the years, the decommissioned road was slowly closed, removed, or altered. Today, there is no single road connecting Chicago to Santa Monica, but rather a series of sections of Interstate, frontage roads, and side roads that represent Route 66.

I can remember in 1962, that my parents threw us three girls in the 1960 Chevy Parkwood station wagon and drove us from Grand Rapids Michigan to Inyokern California on Route 66 in the month of June. In Oklahoma we stopped at a campground, I think, in a place called Red Rock Canyon. My Dad and my middle sister slept in a tent outside and my oldest sister, my Mom and I slept in the back of the station wagon. My Dad and my middle sister came back to the car when my sister peed in the tent and got Dad all wet. We lost five tires on separate incidents along the way. When we were in Texas someone was passing our car and yelling, "Your Tar" " Your Tar". It took us awhile to decipher the Texas drawl! I can remember stopping in Gallup New Mexico to stop for breakfast at this little cafe. They were so busy with only one waitress and she dropped orange juice right by our table. My mother got up, went into the kitchen, grabbed a mop and some rags and began to clean the floor and the table. She then took the mop and bucket back into the kitchen and began to wait on tables. When she felt the young girl was caught up, we ate our breakfast and moved on to the Petrified forest where it was so hot. We had one of those water bags hanging on the front of the grill and one of those old window air conditioners where you pulled the string an cold air came out. My head was in my mothers lap and she pulled the string and all the cold water came down on my head. So Route 66 was one of my favorite memories at the age of 10 years old and I am 69 years old today. Chuck, Bertha, Janet, Jill and Joy travelled Route 66. Just a note to say we drove across country to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Inyokern California. My Uncle was on a submarine for 19 years serving in the Navy and his 20th year was spent on shore duty at China Lake Naval Weapons base in Ridgecrest California. We moved to the desert in 1964 and I have been a desert rat ever since. Thanks for the memories.

I tell everyone they should drive cross country at least once. If for nothing else just the change in landscape from the East to West is just amazing. I’ve done it 4 or 5 times in a car a couple as a kid in a motorhome and many times in a 18 wheeler. I’d leave tomorrow if I could.

We did a trip on Route 66 in 1972 in a station wagon with my parents and 5 of us kids. My sister was car sick the entire trip and nobody wanted to sit next to her in case she got sick. Unfortunately she ended up in the worse possible seat for somebody suffering from motion sickness. She was in the rear facing far back seat of the station wagon. It was definitely a trip to remember. My husband and I have gone back and visited several portions of old Route 66. You bring back several childhood memories. As a child we took many a trip from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois on Route 66. Thanks for the smiles and the laughs.

Having pilot-trainee spouse jump straight from parking lot to public roads? You’re a braver man than I shipmate (not for her technical handling of the rig, or any threat to life & limb, but for fear of the potential harm in my sleep if I don’t phrase that constructive criticism “constructively” enough 😎). Looks like an awesome trip!

When you get to Santa Monica pier, don't forget to get your certificate to show you've completed the drive! And you should abandon the RV for one night when you get to The Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari NM. A real 1930s nostalgia stay. We took our time doing our route 66 trip and it has been one of the highlights of our travels - we tried always to drive on the original road when we could, don't care for interstates, the whole route is full of fascinating places. Go for a meal in the Roadkill Cafe in Seligman AZ with its amusingly named menu items like Swirl of Squirrel or Splatter Platter!! There are so many places it would take all day just to list them!

I’ve been fascinated by the road ever since. Definitely on my bucket list! I can’t wait for next week’s episode! Oh, and the whole not having a “park” option on The Bird, I had this exact conversation with my husband… his car is the same way and I just can’t accept it! That was a great experience thanks for bringing us alone! I really enjoyed the Lincoln vibe too, more than I thought I would from.. a YT channel 🤷‍♂️ Are we there yet?!?🤣

Gary: "I'm OK. Ooohh look at the pretty clouds" The book you picked up Tricia was a great way to find all the hidden gems of Route 66. I used the same book when I began my travels!

Grew up in Winslow, saw the interstate come through there in the early 60’s. Left just as the Eagles put out the song “take it easy” and standin on a corner in Winslow Arizona, that put us on the map for sure. Be safe, enjoy the ride.

Route 66 is going to be a very interesting adventure, between Gary, Charlie, and their shenanigans 😜, seeing all the old historical sites, teaching Tricia how to navigate the bus, this is getting better with every episode, hang on here we go...

Tricia I'm jealous as you were giving Charlie a hug. On out way home from visiting relatives in Illinois we stopped at Lincoln's home and went through the tour. This was back in the 60's of which a lot of what you showed was not there. Just a regular house on a road in a town. So enjoyed seeing the new stuff. This is a lot of fun so enjoying this adventure. Thanks Please give Charlie a hug from me as he is so loveable. Stay safe.

Tris you look lovely as always Love Gary and His comments! It was fun seeing his brother. Tris you are brave for driving that thang. I love the history lessons and you guys taking time to stop and smell the roses. I did not know the interstate system replaced Route 66 and that is when turned into a state route. You mentioned bicycles, my dream is to ride on the TransAmerica Bike Route one day. Keep on RVing! Where do you get the 66 passport book?

My wife is the same way with horns. I had a siren in my 1950 Pontiac custom and she was, at every chance, hitting that button. Lol

Great series thus far. In OKC consider visiting the National Memorial & Museum or the just opened First Americans Museum. Both are very emotional and well done. Safe travels!

Ha ha, I'm loving this series. We need more Gary and Charlie dialogue please! And Trish, I know you're throwin' around the y'all's like you're from Tennessee, but in Illinois, especially down by Pontiac, we say "yous guys" along with Root 66. We drove much of the interstate version of Route 66 this summer from Chicago to Flagstaff and I wondered why they didn't name I-44 and I-40, I-66! Kind of a shame.

Giving the dog a voice is a great idea. There really need to be some deep conversations between the dog and Gary.

Great theme with the Route 66 season as it's loads of fun to watch so far. Good deal on the Toys for Tots. They've been our charity of choice for at least 35 years or more. The big kid in me would love to go in and fill up a couple three shopping carts of toys to drop off. It's lucky my wife would be with me to balance out the shopping for the female side of it....great fun. Anymore we just send a check.
