Route 86 Melbourne Tram Drivers View - May 2016

English - Route 86 tram drivers view from Docklands Harbour Town / Waterfront CIty to Bundoora RMIT via Bourke St City, Smth Street Collingwood, High Street Northcote and Preston and Plenty Road.
A few things have changed. E class trams now share the route leading to one tram at a time and speed restrictions on some of the bridges. The safety zone stop at Tyler Street towards Bundoora has also been removed as it was too short for E class trams.
This view from Docklands Harbour Town takes you through the City Past Southern Cross Station, Bourke St Parliament House and The Royal Exhibition Buildings and Melbourne Museum.
Route 86 also travels through Melbourne's Northern suburbs through to it's most northern point Bundoora RMIT which is 21kms away.
It's one of the longest lines on the network and even on a Sunday it takes nearly an hour and a half from end to end.
Filmed in a B2 class tram, things have changed slightly in 2017 as E class trams also service the route as well.

I thought this was an update for this year, not from last year. Still though, I love this tram video very much (Route 86 is my favorite). The longer the tram ride, the better for me :-)

I normally stay in Preston. It takes quite a bit of time to get to and from the city. So, I catch the train from Bell station instead. Thanks for sharing the video. Cheers.

@@Schony747 I imagine most tram routes aren't designed for long commutes. They're most suited for relatively short hops. Enjoying these videos and seeing how my old stomping grounds have changed

Having been raised in Preston Melboune as well as my young adult years, the 86 was the closest and most used line for me. I still use it occasionally when visiting the folk to in. I have always wondered why the 86 retains the older style trams and hasn't been changed to the more modern low floor trams?

This was filmed in 2016. In 2018 I would say half the 86 trams are now low floor.

Yes, they have a button that they can use to report to the terminal where the base is for the line they travel. The base then calls the Police if the problem requires them.

Another treat, not only seeing more of Melbourne but also the antics of the public there. You handle situations well. You've driven so many different routes. Did you request them or were they assigned to you? I would imagine that many drivers prefer to drive the same route all the time, though I'd find that boring.

The route 86 is a Preston route also shared by hub drivers who drive 11 routes. I'm a Southbank driver who sometimes drives hub routes to get these opportunities. Southbank has 4 routes but 4 classes of trams so it's not boring.

It's quite a long route at 21kms but it gives you a diverse view of Melbourne.

@@planetX15, the longest route is Vermont south Shopping Centre which is 22.8 km (14.2 miles) long. Route 86 is the second longest at 22.2 km (13.8 miles) long.

Hey, just love to say that I love you tram videos and the funny thing is I live off the route 86. Good job for keeping the passengers safe at David st. Have you seen the new tracks on plenty road between Murray rd and bolderwood pde, how often do you drive the route 86. Huge fan!!

G'day. I'm a tram driver from Southbank. I've been there for 18 years. I don't drive the 86 that often as that route runs out of Preston. Every so often they let me out of my cage and send me to other depots.

Great video, love trams/streetcars/trolleys!! Too bad I had to mute it in the beginning because of that loud and completely obnoxious "fucking idiot." That clown should have been removed from the tram since he apparently did not take notice of the signage above the tram doors that read: "Sorry, no fucking idiots allowed on board."

1:08:50 I have always wondered what the hell is that little dangly thing that is located on the light post and has a string dangling out of it. In this case it is located just above the red T light on the pole on the left.

A timing point for trams. In this case it picks up the tram location and send location data. If this timing point was for government reporting purposes, there would be two orange bands underneath the mushroom shaped timing point.

@@Schony747 Longer than 120 seconds?! What the hell? I would lose it. A tram shouldn't have to wait at all, the newer trams can carry over 200 people, the average car occupancy rate in Aus is only 1.3 passengers per vehicle!

Wasn't reported. Unless I have witnesses, it's hard to get a prosecution.

It may have been but up until a few weeks ago I really hadn't had a good look a the footage. The other issue is it's a front on view so without any witnesses the defence would argue you could not tell if an offence had been commited or not.

Schony747 i wish that was the case in New York city transit. I video taped myself operating my train in May of 2016. I posted it and the next day i was taken out of service pending termination. I now clean train station.

I don't agree with the Bundrooah lightrail portion of the route, trams shouldn't be used that way or go that far afield.
