The Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike trail is 15 miles long with 10 train tunnels and 7 sky-high trestles. The ride starts with a trip through the 1.661 mile long St. Paul Pass Tunnel. It is a highlight of the trail that follows the crest of the Bitterroot Mountains near Lookout Pass Ski Area.
We had planned to double our mileage by riding back up the 2% grade trail, and glad we did... The line for the bus at the end was super long as you'll see. This video is almost too long but lots of memories that were hard to edit out and plenty of tunnel time in the dark.
Lesson learned here... bring a 300 lumens flashlight! My walmart bike light was useless. Big thanks to those I followed through the tunnels with solid lights. Enjoy, like, subscribe and share :-)

Thanks for the video. I'll need to get myself a better light for my plan to cycle the May opening week

Yes highly recommended! The rental lights will suffice. I think they are around 700 lumen. The brighter the better 🙂

I wish they would lay some french drain in the tunnel path, then put some 3/4 minus and compact it.. That would keep all that water/mud from accumulating. and make the ride pleasant..

Yes, that would keep the mud off the back! I guess the mud is part of the experience.

@@7B-808 Then have a bath at each end to wash yourself and your bike.. LOL When the train was going thru, the rails were high enough to keep the train out of the mud. Why didn't they simply fill in between the 2 tracks with compacted 3/4 minus..? the tunnel would have still been able to drain on the sides of the track.

How long was the ride, including typical stops for viewing, etc? You said the shuttle line was long - what time of day was it when you got down to the shuttle? I'm wondering if we started in the morning if we'd have the same issue with the shuttle line in the early afternoon... Thanks! Enjoyed the video and tips!

Hi Todd, I'd say somewhere between 2 and 3 hours depending on how often you stop and take it all in. Maybe even 4 hours! As for the shuttle line, we were there on a weekend day, so that surely plays into the crowd factor. We just went again this past June and there was no shuttle line, but we were there late in the day and it was hailing lol! I hope you have a great visit!

i just did the ride a few days ago, the first tunnel gets super dark, and you might want to bring a jacket for the first tunnel. other than that it was super fun!

You know it! Nice. I'm making part 2 of this year's ride to publish soon. We got caught in a hail storm at the end. 48° and quite miserably wet and cold. Survival mode!

I’m doing this soon but not looking forward to that mile long dark tunnel 😣

The tunnel isn't as bad as portrayed in this video. I've been back since and rented an 800 lumens bike light that make all the difference. Don't do like me and get a Walmart cheapo light. Night and day difference. Literally!

Hello, thanks for the review. I’m driving up from California next week. Going to rent a men bike since I’m bringing my road bike to ride around Couer d’ Elene on my trip. Any ideas if you can fly a small drone in the area where you ride the trail. Thank You.

Have a great trip! As for a drone, I don't know the rules for that. You should contact them to be sure either way. Nice place for some drone footage no doubt!

Hi, most of the video was shot coming down. We did ride back up though and it's a long grind! Not too bad though.

I have a few questions about this bike trail! so do you just drive up the trailhead and get a pass and start riding to the other side? I would like to go there and back and I dont want to use a shuttle.

Hi, you would need to first go to Lookout Pass to purchase a pass and any rentals you require. I'd get a 300 lumens headlamp rental if you don't have one. From Lookout Pass they'll give you directions to the trail head. Try here for detailed info: www.ridethehiawatha.com/getting-to-the-hiawatha EDIT: actually you can drive directly to the trail head to purchase tickets if you require no rentals. Cash only though! I didn't even know that... just read the link I provided above :-) Have fun!

On Google Maps the first half of the tunnel has an incline. Is it a difficult incline to ride? Then the 2nd half declines.
@7B-808
@7B-808 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, If there's in incline either way I didn't notice it. Seems flat the whole way. And dark... very dark. A 300+ lumens light is definitely recommended.
