The Routeburn Track is a popular 33km tramp (hike) over the main divide, which takes approximately three days to complete. The alpine section of this ‘Great Walk’ will take the entirety of your second day and runs for approximately 10km. In this video we will look at the track as if we were starting from the Glenorchy side, but the tramp can be attempted in any direction. Use this video as part of your planning so you have a successful adventure and make it home safely.

This is certainly one of New Zealand’s most beautiful walking tracks and is well worth doing. I did this walk in 1997, more than a quarter of a century ago now.

Great vid and thanks for all the hard work putting it together. Hopefully this year we'll cross the ditch from Sydney and do this with the kids. Back in 2014 my son and I did Tongariro - he was 4 at the time and the youngest to do it so we'll be in good shape for the Routeburn. Our daughter (now almost 8) is just as fit (and crazy)!! Cheers and thanks - Dave and family

@@oversizedshoe3658 Not sure what you mean, but he did do it and it was reported in local papers here in Sydney. Kids have amazing capabilities if they are allowed to express themselves fully (with the right kind of support). In addition - he absolutely loved the experience and has maintained his love of the outdoors and covering great distances on foot or pushbike (like his younger sister). Cheers - Dave

Dude this just made this route all the more cherished. 2:47 is it really common to sprain and twist your ankles on this section 😬

My mum broke her ankle an hour out from the last hut. The doc ranger told us that a lot of people fall and break things on that track

I've done this one 4 times altogether, heavy rain was experienced on at least one day of every walk. It's a good idea (I think) to allow yourself 4 days as you aren't having to march against the clock and have more time to enjoy, or even explore (with care!). On this tramp watch out particularly for inexperienced and badly equipped trampers, also large parties that will attempt to monopolise some or all of a DOC hut. This tramp is also interlinked with the Caples and Greenstone walks. Greenstone is very easy, but no less enjoyable for that; Caples calls for a scramble over a ridge, but once this is out of the way it's easy and you may be able to fit in a visit to Lake Rere near to Lake Wakatipu.

I found most natives of New Zealand to be the most poorly equipped because New Zealand has a very limited selection of good gear. That said, anyone attempting any tramp in the southern Alps of New Zealand without the proper layering and shell is bound to be in severe trouble

@@michaeljurasius6554 I don't know about Kiwis and their equipment, not actually disagreeing because my experience of tramps is that you don't meet Kiwis! I've met Ozzies, Germans, Israelis, Swiss, even other British, but not Kiwis!. Partly because of my own experiences, I'd say that the worst prepared can be Israelis who have simply no concept of what rain in NZ can be like!

@@StellaLovesMusic25 I walked it 4X because I like it, and I've no idea where the 'dangerous' bits are. You can combine it with the Greenstone and Caples tracks in the area to make a round trip. If you really want to demonstrate that it's dangerous you could try walking it in a tee shirt and flip flops; there's usually one or two people at any time who try this.

Great Video, thank you for sharing! Is it possible to hike from routeburn Falls Hut all the way to to the Divine on one day, if the weather conditions are good? I am an experienced hiker and just from looking at the difference of change of height and the kilometers it looks possible to me. Thanks for your advice and Best regards, Maria

Kia ora Maria, It's certainly possible but depends on fitness. People occasionally run the full track as a trail run/walk. With an overnight pack, Routeburn Falls Hut to the Divide could be possible within 8 hours, assuming conditions are good. But definitely leave early to give yourself plenty of time and keep the weather and your fitness in mind when planning.

Hey, is this a good hike of youve never done an over night hike before? Completed plenty of day hikes but would be first time doing a camp hike.

Kia ora, definitely an option to camp instead of using the huts, just be mindful of the insects and Kea. You can find out more information either through planmywalk.nz or through DOC's website www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/

It may be a great track but I personally had a miserable time as I went with my mother the slowest walker on the planet with balance issues. She ruined it for me. I know that makes me sound ungrateful and all but she was so bad

I don't think it's right to use some images not from Routeburn Track. You do that only because, 1) you just don't honour the truth, 2) you don't even know what's where, 3)you thought you could get away with it that nobody notices? This comes from the organisation to represent our mountains in NZ and why is it ok to use some footage not from Routeburn Track in the video to introduce Routeburn? I completely disagree with you and quite disgusted really . I will not support any of the causes you promote whatsoever.

Kia ora Toshi, thanks for your feedback on our safety video. Our Routeburn Video is just one of 12 NZ tracks filmed in our tramping video series, all of which all include the same preview footage at the beginning of the video of other tracks. We did this to inspire viewers to consider other tracks in the series and help them prepare for those too. However, we can assure you the entirety of the video following the preview footage is from the Routeburn track. We hope you enjoy it.
