What does it take to restore a vintage London double-decker bus and keep it on the road?
Built in the 1960's our AEC Routemaster double decker buses need constant attention, so if you want to find out what it takes to keep a London Routemaster bus on the road then make sure you check-out all our London Bus maintenance and restoration videos here on KZfaq...
Filmed in the UK at the Routemaster 4 Hire HQ in Wrexham, North Wales we are passionate about London buses and with 7 vintage buses in the fleet we defiantly have our work cut out!
In this episode we give the drivers cab some much needed attention as it looks like this part of the bus has not seen a paint brush for over 30 years.
Also don't forget to check-out all our AEC Routemaster London bus restoration videos in this playlist...

As an American living in London for a few years in the late 70s, I couldn't afford the Tube and travelled mostly by bus. Anyway, there was no other practical way to get from Waterloo, where I lived, to where I worked in Bermondsey. Riding the buses gave me a perspective on London and its geography that riding the Tube all the time never could have. I love the vintage double-deckers, and always grabbed the upstairs front seat whenever I could!

I saw the bus on the Ipcres File over last weekend and watched it intently. Just one little problem, the conductor had the wrong type of ticket machine. Living in Kent and working in London, I can remember the machines for London and Kent. The machine used in the clip was one used in the provinces not London. The bus looked really great though. Take a look. I used Route 37 between Dulwich and Brixton regularly using RML buses 1966 JJD 4nnD vintage etc. I love all of your episodes, brings back memories, keep them coming.

As usual a really great video. The explanation of what had to be undertaken was great. It would have been very helpful to explain how you managed to get the driver’s window out of the cab and telling us what tools were used to execute the job. Again it would have been beneficial if the glazier explained how he reinserted the window again showing what tools were used. Really look forward to your videos. A lot of interested viewers who are not mechanics would appreciate a better explanation of all the tasks you undertake.

Hi Ian, excellent constructive comments, thank you. Will take these onboard going forward. To answer your queries, the old rubber was simply cut with out with a stanly knife, once you have cut enough rubber away the glass simply slides out. I'm not sure what tools the glazer used when the glass was refitted, but next time we book him I will make sure he explains what he is doing.

@@Routemaster4Hire personally, with the drivers space being as isolated as it is, i think it would have to be more than a bit on the old and worn side to go to the trouble of redoing it. and it looked pretty good outside of the needing to be cleaned.

You can be sure it's turned over it's six digit odometer at least once.
@Routemaster4Hire
@Routemaster4Hire 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, these buses were not fitted with an odometer so its impossible to say for sure. Plus don't forget at overhaul the engines would have been removed from the body and fitted to a different bus once repaired. That said it is estimated that these buses have each done over 1.5 million miles during their service life. Nowadays they only do 1000 - 1500 miles a year with us, so a fraction for what they used to do.
