Router table fence requirement/s basically comes down to individual needs, so you,ve established your requirements and built the fence accordingly, well done. Love the videos, keep em coming.

I made a router table with two fences, one split and one solid with the zero clearance style arch- I have a jointer so I haven't needed the split fence since building it. Instead of using MDF I used a 4ft melamine shelf as the top with a couple of strongbacks screwed into the underside which match the dimensions of my folding jobsite table saw to prevent flex and I can slide the table extension in snug to lock it into the table saw. I'm limited for space (1 car garage not dedicated solely to woodwork) so modularity is critical. I stole your idea about using the table saw extension from your storage box video for my router table build... so thanks a million for you vids and excellent ingenuity.

I made my router fence to attach to the table saw fence like yours. That was 11 or 12 years ago and I really like the convenience. And I made the fence like you're "supposed to" meaning the nice sliding fences stay on the shelf all the time, I'm not even sure I've ever used them. So I think your thought process was spot on!

Hey. I would say you are correct. Simple is sometimes much more practical than trying to make everything fancy and in my opinion over complicating things . Stick to simplicity. Your on the right track. 👍

I like the sacrificial fence idea. It will always fit the bit that you're using. Good video and project.

So, years ago I built Norm's router table. Exactly like the drawings I ordered from his site. The big fence with all the moveable pieces for all different type of bits from small to jumbo panel bits. Twenty years later that fence has seen one kind of bit, max 1" diameter molding bit, and that's rare. Mostly use that tool now for rabbits and dados because it's easier to set up over the table saw. I learned that panel raising is done best on a shaper so I bought a good one of them.

I think that is a great use of the space and the re-work of the fence looks great. It should really help the dust collection and if it works for you it’s irrelevant if someone thinks you’re doing it wrong. Outstanding job, I intend to put your lift on my to-do list when I’m able to build my table saw, outfeed, router area.

Yeah I totally agree. Keep it simple! As a beginer I fell into the trap of wanting to make a complex fence for all situations. But hey I'm a beginner I'm not going to making complex projects so I agree make a fence that will suit your needs.

The fence on my router table serves pretty much one purpose: it's a place for the dust collection hose to mount. I used it quite a bit when installing some hardwood flooring to make tongues on the ends of pieces for some fancy stuff, but that's the only time I can even remember using it. I've had my router table for about three years now and I've never adjusted the two sliding fences so I think you'll be fine.

I incorporated my router into my tablesaw this past summer. I really love the room it saves and the way it works. As for mistakes...who on youtube would ever point out if you made mistakes...I've NEVER seen anyone critique someone else on youtube for ANYTHING....

I had adjustable wings on mine and i set them once and never touched them again. If I would re build it, I would have one solid piece like you did. Great build.

Very nice work as always, I just got that table saw for Christmas and have been loving having it in my shop. I want to do the same this by mounting a router table of that wing. Watching someone go through the process is always helpful before one tries it, so thank you for putting the time in making your videos.

Love this and all of your vids. I have the same saw (partly because of your recommendation--thanks!), and I'm using a similar router table setup in that wing. So far I've just used a sacrificial scrap board against the fence when I need it. Completely agree that the slotted, adjustable fence isn't necessary. Can't thank you enough for sharing your process and thoughts! You do great work.

I thought the storage area in the table saw wing was a great idea. But, it's your shop and only you know exactly what your needs are to work the way you want and need to work within your shop. Nice solution for your needs. Thumbs up for sure!

Old movie, but I make lots of slots in middle of the piece and then a fence is outstanding. And the slots is not end to end.

I need to do the same thing. I have a really small shop and don't have room for a router table. I like the router fence attached to saw fence.

Nice Ryan. The only purpose the split face router fence serves me, is I can adjust the space to match the thickness of my spiral upcut bit when I'm routing mortises. It provides a very helpful visual reference for me, so that can see exactly where to stop and start my mortises, even though I can't actually see them being cut. But this wouldn't be necessary for a guy with a horizontal slot mortiser ;D

My router table has a solid piece instead of 2 as well and I like it much more myself than the 2 piece fences. Great video as always!

Nice build Ryan! You probably won’t do it now, but if you miss having your tool storage where it was, you still have some space to the left and right of your router lift to put two smaller lift top bins or shallow drawers.

I'm with you bloke, I just used a sacrificial fence with somewhere to mount the dust collector hose.

Still watching actually but I certainly see where you're going with the one-piece sacrificial fence idea. What I WOULD have a problem with is sidelining my table saw to be able to use my router table. I would want a dedicated fence. I'd hate to have to break the setup of either one to use the other.

Alot of great ideas in the small details you bring up. When I upgrade my own router table extension I will have to take these in mind. Thanks for a good video.

Simple is best when it comes to home-brewed shop accessories! For me, design is often dictated 50% by need and 50% by whatever trash boards I've got laying around. From there, it's the shortest route to getting the job done. This means some of my solutions don't always carry forward perfectly to the next problem, but I don't mind modifying things on the fly, either. So, with that being said, my router fence of choice is a jointed 2x4 scrap clamped to the table, notched for the bit and drilled through for the shopvac. 3 minutes to make, will likely last for years.

I built a big Steve Ramsey style fence from melamine for my table and almost only used it for jointing thinner pallet wood. Now I don’t even use it. I built a jointing sled for the table saw. Then again I almost never use it for anything other than round over and chamfers and rabbets. I’d gladly trade my 3hp router and table for a trim router.

I think you're dead on right about the sacrificial fence. Any new application you find can have it's own dedicated fence in a short time. Plus it is simple. Love simple solutions

I think you're right as far as the one piece fence. It's nice to have a t-track in the table for a featherboard but I suppose you could just put in a couple threaded inserts if the need arises.

I do the same with my router table fence. For big profile bits I joint a 2*4 and use it as a sacfrifical fence.

If the straight fence suits your needs, that's all that matters. I have a cheapy bench top router table. The plate is plastic and bows downward, the split fence has been aligned, despite all my efforts. I think the wings of my R4512 are getting ready to get this upgrade, straight one-piece fence and all.!!

What ever works for you is the best way , I have a Bosch router table so it came with it's own fence, I to use my DeWalt trim router more than the Bosch router table and router

Thanks for the video. I'm about to build a router table onto my saw, and I'm torn between mounting the fence as you did to your table saw fence, or building the router table one of its own. My only concern is knowing myself, I'd get the fence attached and get ready to sit down to do some routering, and all of a sudden I'd be going, wait I need to cut a few things on the saw. I'm afraid I'd be spending half my day taking it off and putting it back on.

My only comment is that that particular router could not handle the larger bits and their power needs anyway. That set up is great for the router you're using. Build on!

I just use an arch shaped cutout on my fence (very much like yours) and have had no reason to change. I still need to build a lift like yours though!

Woha coincident lol. I finished mine yesterday, very similar. Mine is made from a piece of left over melamine and plexi glass for the insert. I made my entire table removable since I sometimes need to remove it. It slots in to the saw extension with some hdpe brackets I made. I did not get my fence square either and also had to shim it, haha. My fence idea is similar to yours, just one piece with a small slot for dust extraction. It seems to work fine, but time will tell. I have a few adjustments I need to consider, and I need to pretty up the cut edges of the melamine. the only thing I havent figured out is how to route the short ends of the boards safely, since I have no T-track and really no room for one either. So I cant use a mitre guage. Perhaps I can use a backing board..

I abandoned the slide adjusting fence two years ago because I could never keep the outfeed side to remain flush with the infeed side. I was catching pieces and, often, would drift a sixth out from the bit, causing the pieces to have inconsistent profiles. I don’t need em. But I do need a lift.

I keep saying that I will build a decent router table fence, but every time I say that I ask myself "why?". I have no answer yet so I continue to use a scrap of particleboard which has a sawn straight edge. Works for me.

Splitting the fences helps with some dust collection and as you stated for using like a jointer. Otherwise your zero clearance ideas are spot on. Curious how the MDF is holding up, any sag in it? Love your quick flip stops.

Based on your described needs... You don't need an adjustable fence. I personally use mine with bits that dont have barings.

i have the same table saw. you have the bar on the end on wrong. if you flip it around it goes to the same level as the side wing.

Awesome, this is next on my list of upgrades for my own R4512. But at 1:25, isn't that bar supposed to be even with the table surface? I think mine is - you may have installed yours upside down.

I've had a router table in the extension wing of two of my table saws. My problem with it is that it takes time to set it up when you need to route, and 9 times out of ten you need to use the table saw in between routing. I currently have a stand alone router table and can't see going back to the table saw mounted one. Your fence is exactly how I've been doing it for years, except my one piece fence is clamped to the sliding fence, so I still have it if needed. Are you concerned that the MDF table will sag with the weight of the router and lift?, a little extra bracing doesn't take long to put in. Sorry for the long comments. Good job.
