Anticipating router bit rotation is something that can become second nature, but along the learning curve (and often even for experienced woodworkers) it's easy to forget which way is ... right. This little trick will help keep you headed in the right direction. For more on routers, check out bit.ly/PTE_The_Router.

Ooooohhh... thanks for the tip about the frame!!! I always just remember that my hand router I always go counter-clockwise, I don't think I would have thought about having to go around a frame the other way, just intuitively I wouldn't have thought that I'm now working on the INSIDE of the piece. Great tip! (maybe I still would have thought of it, cause you always go left to right, but who knows).

In addition to trying to remember clockwise versus counter-clockwise for direction, there's another "right hand" rule you can use ... hold your right hand palm down, extend your thumb out (90 degrees to the other fingers), and place the end of your thumb against the edge you're going to route. Your fingers will point in the direction you should be routing.

Yeah, this is the way I like to remember it when using a handheld router & then it doesn't matter about inside/outside clockwise/counter-clockwise. It's always about pointing with my right thumb to the edge I'm routing & my index finger points which way to go (like a backwards L).

That was a good video. The part about the carbide on the bit for rotation is my big take away. Thank You

Whichever way the router wants to throw the workpiece(in a table) or whichever way the router wants to run away in(hand-held)...just go the other direction...right? Just like the way we use circular saw blades...you feed against the rotation not with it

It is easy to determine the direction of rotation of the bit - just look at it. What is not so obvious is the 'trade off' between cutting safely and causing 'chip out' and use of a router bit with a template following bearing.

Make a loser 'L shaped' sign with your right hand. Back of you hand faces up. Point your thumb at what you want to route. Move the router in the direction of your index finger. Works for inside and outside cuts.

OMG! Has it really come to the level of having to give long dragged out analogies in explaining the bit rotation direction in lieu of a simple clock direction??? Or has that digital clock thing got them confused again? Bit Rotation = Bit down clockwise ... bit up counter clockwise.
