My granddad helped majorly on this advert he worked at the building the wedding was at and he was asked to find the location at the end of the car going into the distance he was hired by the people from rover for a few days to transport the film crews to the location he found them. Makes me very proud watching this knowing he helped make this. He then bought one years later.

Where was it filmed? And who is the bride?

South Shields town hall, don't know bride.

The shot of the car going up the cobbled bank is Hanover Street just off Newcastle quayside; those old mill buildings long since demolished and replaced by apartments. The same street also appears in the 1961 film Payroll.

The R8 was the best Rover 200 and 400 variants they brought out. It was roomy, comfortable, practical, and even better than the previous Rover 213 / 216 that preceded it.

Excellent cars! I've had loads of them. I personally prefer K Series Engined Variants, quieter and more refined.. I will say that my Honda engines 216SLi (1991) is a load of fun to drive! It just loves being revved :) I've just rescued an early 216 GSi Automatic too. They'll soon be collectable.

I agree, i had 3 triumph acclaims, a rover 213s and then a rover 416si (saloon version of the car featured in the video) all of which were honda designed and honda units fitted, i loved em, and non ever let me down, the 416 had 147,000 miles on it when i sold it, never spent anything on it apart from wear and tear items.. the rover/honda partnership worked well, then BAE sold it to BMW, honda pulled out, and we know the rest, honda wanted to buy rover, they would still be here now if they had!

absolutely fantastic cars. One of the best cars ever made really, there maybe better modern cars, but in 1989 the car was amazing - the r8 200 was like it was from another world when compared to, well.... ANY other manufacturers rival cars. Astra, Escort and Golf of the time are skips compared to the Rover

It's sad these were never sold in America, for the Rover 2 series is sharp! I love the 800, which was sold as the Sterling in America, and what a fine car. Having the Honda drivetrain helped great with reliability, along with the Rover having a different personality, compared to a Honda. I would want one of these with an automatic transmission, though. The song in this is "Up Where We Belong," and it was also performed by Joe Cocker. Great advert....

Great cars. Actually the 214 and 414 used Rover's own engine, the K series, which was also later used in the Ariel Atom, Lotus Elise and Caterham Seven. But you could have the 216/416 which featured Honda's D16 engines, both SOHC and DOHC, non-VTEC. I had the japonese cousing, the Concerto 1.6i-16, and later the Rover 216 Coupé, both 1.6 (Honda powered).

@ziloid The Rover was a very good car, my uncle had 1. It did 127k miles before the HG went and never had any other issues other than a wheel bearing at about 85k. He scrapped when a lady drove into the side of it. You see so many of them now aswell still, many more than the same age Astras, Escorts or other similar size cars from the period.

@ziloid Did you know that Honda's version was produced in Rover's factory? I had both, a Concerto 1.6i-16 and a Rover 216 Coupé. Both very good.
@ash799013 жыл бұрын
@ziloid You obviously have not owned or even driven both of them! The Rover version IS the superior version. Way way more classy and with nicer/better engines. And as said......you obviously are not aware that Rover built the Honda version too, in the Rover factory?

I had a K reg 214si....It was the heaviest car I've ever driven. It needed power steering. Also the 5th gear was to close ratio'd...At 70mph in 5th was booming. The new 214 had better gearing. nice interior crap Philips sound system. nice panel fit

Good job it was an early 216 because if it had been a k-series one he would have had to pull over on that country drive to add coolant and then get towed to the nearest garage for a head gasket
