I remember getting a great smell as I walked to school in the morning past cars being warmed on my the Owners. A lot of carburetor cars running rich on choke as they sat.

@@Manualchoke I would wait outside the school gates on a morning, as all the mums turned up in their clapped out metros and fiestas. Some of them would leave the choke on and there was one beige coloured metro, with that lovely soft pleather interior, that would turn up to drop some girls off. The mum would sit there with it running rich and snorting out grey/black fumes right at me while they all chatted and faffed about getting out the car. One of the girls once pointed at the chugging pipe and went "Wow, haha! Look the little exhaust shaking! It's such a banger chaz! Love that smell though..." And they watched it for a good few seconds while the mum struggled to keep the chugging engine running while laughing. It was an awesome memory!

@@bernardmathews22 wow! I remember similar situations at our school too. It was certainly mainly the mums that had the older cars. As you say usually metros, fiesta, novas & Renault 5’s. Some pulling up outside running rich with the chokes still pulled out. While some others arriving in silence as they had stalled as they stopped. @@bernardmathews22 wow takes me back to my school days too and from when I had a manual choke car - a 92 vauxhall Nova and had the added bonus of being able to run on leaded 4* as well as unleaded 😊

Totally agree! An amazing smell from these old choke cars. Loved the novas! Flooded very quickly on too much choke!

Yeah that sounds very familiar to me. Very like how my parents car used to react.

@@Manualchokewhen I finally was given the chevette it was in a very terrible condition but I loved trying to get the engine started every single time…..tons of pedal pumping and holding the ignition key until It started up for me. Especially when no one was home….i would take time having fun cranking and pumping the day lights out of the chevette…..my mom called the chevette the sputtering mobile.

@@Manualchoke did you parents have a chevette also?? My mom’s chevette was a 1977-78 model from 1976-78 was best chevettes to have fun pedal pumping and cranking…

@@Manualchokeit was an old Victor FC, my first car inherited from an uncle, lived outside in all weathers, it hated the cold and damp, I loved morning starts, soft vinyl seats, pumping the accelerator, full choke, I’d flood her and drain the battery, wonderful
