Glad to have found your demo on Rovner ligatures. The statement, “it’s amazing what a good ligature can make,” is an understatement. I found the Platinum is my best lig. It gets low and high notes for me and everything in between. Other ligs stretch, while Rovner Platinum is a lifetime product.

The best ligatures! My Royal City Sax Quartet uses them, and I've personally used them for at least 40 years!

I play on Legere Studio Cut reeds which have a bit of resistance and I have used a Rovner Dark, Light and Versa Ligatures before. I currently use a Rovner Dark on a Selmer S80 C** and I find it gives me a dark centered tone with a bit of resistance which I need, and it is very easy to take on and off and adjust the mouthpiece on the neck without it moving. I tried the light ligature which I found had a bit of a lighter sound but I found low notes slightly harder to get out with it over the dark, both seemed for me to dampen the reed vibrations and darken the tone which I liked for classical playing but I prefer the Dark ligature. I tried a Dark then light ligature on a JodyJazz HR* 6M alto mouthpiece but switched to a Francois Louis Ultimate XL ligature (Brass) when I found the sound I was getting was a bit too dark and compressed for my liking but I liked the centered tone I got. With the Francois Louis it had a bigger sound, clearer but less centered and I liked it more personally on that mouthpiece and I found the low notes came out a little easier on it than the Rovner. I have also used a Versa ligature on a Meyer 6M before selling the mouthpiece and liked it and removing the plate or putting the material flaps over or under the plate, I did notice the change in the tone slightly depending on the configuration. The MK III I haven't tried but I did notice in Simons playing, it was dark, mellower and more centered with less projection compared to the others he was playing on. I liked the Platinum ligature sound here, its brighter and has a bigger sound as Simon said, probably due to being metal.

Hi how is it going with the jodyjazz hr 6* with the francois louis ligature,do you still like it , I'm trying to buy a ligature for my jodyjazz hr* ,any advice !!

@@emilegiovanoandy3653 Excuse late reply. First, you need to be careful with the ligature when putting it on the mouthpiece as the plate on the ligature could potentially scrape the table of the mouthpiece as it has slightly rough edges. I had the same ligature, although it was the XL it was slightly narrower and used it on my Selmer S80 C** (they come in different sizes to fit different mouthpieces) but I stopped using it on the Selmer when I accidentally scraped the table of the mouthpiece with the plate on the ligature. To avoid the issue, I had to screw the bottom screw all the way out so the plate is at the bottom of the ligature and is away from the mouthpiece table when you put it on the mouthpiece. The side rails on the mouthpiece, while not rough to touch, may scrape the sides of the mouthpiece, so you have to get it aligned right and avoid turing the ligature much once its on the mouthpiece. When tightening it to the reed, I noticed the plate tends to move slightly off being straight so I found it fiddly to get aligned exactly right the first few times I used it, but got the hang of it and have no issues screwing it on and off now. I also noticed you have to tighten it well or the ligature may move when adjusting the mouthpiece on the neck cork and twice, the screw holding the plate on, came out for me when screwing in the ligature to the reed as the screw that holds the plate on, goes into the larger screw that tightens the ligature. You get a hex Allen key with it to tighten/loosen the plate screw. As for the sound and feel, first, I play on a Yamaha YAS-280 so its freeblowing with not a lot of resistance compared to other alto saxophones and has a brighter sound. I found my Francois Louis Ultimate brass ligature is quite freeblowing also and I have liked it more than other ligatures I have tried: Rovner Dark and Light, Rovner Versa, Rico H ligature and the original ligature that came with the Meyer. It feels easier to play on with less resistance overall. Compared to the Rovner ligatures it produces a clearer sound. With original plate it comes with, and I can get a clear, bright sound on it with the JodyJazz HR* and have no issues getting low or high notes out. With the H ligature the JodyJazz HR* came with (JodyJazz no longer supply a ligature with the mouthpiece) I found the H fiddly to put on and it wouldn't always sit, even when fully tightened and it left 4 indents on the side of the table of my reed and mouthpiece where the edges of the H rested, so not great and the reason why I switched ligatures. For the Francois Louis ligature, I got 3 extra plates for it, a Brass, Stainless Steel and a Stainless steel with rubber glued on top. I found the brass plate gave a fuller, darker sound but was more resistant, maybe due to being thicker and a bit heavier than the other plates, the stainless steel plate is very light and has the least resistance and is easy to play on and has a slightly lighter, brighter sound and the stainless steel with the rubber had a bit of a darker tone than the stainless steel as it has slightly more resistance, but after using it twice, the glue holding the rubber on, was starting to come off and made my reed sticky slightly so haven't used it since. Overall, quite a good ligatuare to play on, just watch the issues I mentioned above about the plate and the mouthpiece table. If it had smooth edges on the plate, I'd like it a lot more, but for how it feels to play on and the sound I get, I like it and it doesn't get in the way of my playing. I am thinking of trying a BG Duo ligature in the future to see if that will be better overall, but for now I am happy with the ligature if I make sure to watch putting it on and taking it off so I don't scratch the mouthpiece. I did use the same FL Ultimate Brass ligature I used on my Selmer S80 C** on a Yamaha 7C mouthpiece as they are roughly the same size, and had no issues at all because the mouthpiece is plastic and harder to scratch but made sure to keep the plate away from the mouthpiece table. On the Yamaha 7C, it gave me a very freeblowing feel.

I have the Rovner light and MkIII and the light sounds louder and edgier than the MKIII which is quiet and seems more suited for Classical genre. If the SS, dark, and platinum are louder and cleaner than the Light, then it’s going to be a happy saxophone playing party in my music room.

I have the Versa, and the Dark. Both are great. Honestly I initially bought the Dark bc I just wanted a lig with one screw to tighten--but they work great. Got the Versa when I bought a slim tenor mouthpiece--once I realized the Rovner alto lig was still too big for it. My shop didn't have a Dark in that size only the Versa. Have no desire to use anything else though. The only complaint I have is with the way the plates are held on the Versa (1) but that design has changed since then so the point's moot now.

Hi - We offer a range of Sop Saxes starting from around £699 for new models. These would come with all necessary accessories and case etc. You can see the range here: www.dawkes.co.uk/woodwind-instruments/saxophone/soprano-saxophone In terms of an extra high quality neck strap for Soprano, we'd suggest: www.dawkes.co.uk/rico-padded-sax-strap-sopranoalto-strap/15106

Sounded to me like the Platinum was the winner, followed by the Dark, the star series, the Mark lll, the light.

Another really useful video! Thanks! Can I ask about that heavy mass screw on the Yamaha - can I get one like it for a Yanagisawa? I know about the Boostar (bought it from you guys), just curious about Yamaha's because I haven't seen it available anywhere 😊🙏

Hi, currently Yamaha UK won't make these available to the market, not sure why but they've had a few between the artists for years but never made them available :( The Yani BooStar is the next best bet.
