My s type doesn't have a sunroof. 22 years old. The headliner also sags. The foam slowly disintegrates over the years. I used twist pins to pin it back to the fibreglass.

I had a 1999 model, had lots of issues with the central locking, it just had a mind of it's own, it would double lock the passenger door while driving along, sometimes the car would lock and unlock fine, other times it would lock then just unlock on its own or unlock and then lock immediately! Very complicated system, I tried diagnosing the fault but never solved it! The fake 'wood' trim was disappointing but comfort was spot on. Lovely car to drive, those classic Jaguar lines really give the car lots of character. The 3.0 v6 engine is basically a Ford Lincoln LS unit, so when ordering parts check for a Ford equivalent part, usually loads cheaper! I had the satnav option in mine, worked great, maps were years out of date though and entering an address was a faff but it did work well.😎👍

Jaguar doesn't do "fake" wood, so you really don't know what you're even talking about. Cool story though.

@@jmin8400 My 1999 'jaguar' s-type was more ford than jag, it didn't 'feel' that luxurious to be fair, sure it was comfy and a nice drive but not what I'd call luxurious by any stretch! The steering wheel felt like a quality piece of wood but the dash and door trims, looked 'fake' one of mine had a suspicious looking hairline crack, rather like how plastic cracks, it just looked and felt fake! 🤔😯

@@pdtech4524 Wood was laminated poorly maybe? I worked for JLR primarily at Jaguar, years after the S-Type era as an engineer, but my father was a regular customer for the XJ-Series over 20 years ago and I saw the S-Type when it arrived in UK dealers on March 24, 1999 and USA April 28, 1999. I know for a fact that under TATA, many concessions were made in terms of quality at Jaguar, because I was very instrumental to the process and privy to what was approved and rejected, often being they vetoed suggested quality control improvements of mine to save £££. I have Jaguar patents with my name, both a disgrace and accolade, depending on what it is. In the Ford era, I do recall that DEW98 planning began around 1992/93 and X200 (S-Type) was definitely underway by 1994. Styling was complete in the fall of 1995 and locked in by the summer of 1996, under Mr. Geoff Lawson. Was supposed to be launched in 1998 originally. The Lincoln LS was really a cut down Jaguar, not the reverse. It speaks more to the struggle to water down the boutique XJ into a mid-range volume vehicle in the S-Type and still make a good profit. But your story was interesting (I meant it literally), but seemed a tad unfair and odd, as wood trim is the highlight of Jaguar. S-Type was the first Ford Motor Company product to have GPS navigation BTW, so quite interesting you had that. I was always fascinated by it, but rarely ever saw the system in person, as it wasn't a very popular option. I liked visiting Guy Salmon Jaguar in Coventry, near Browns Lane back then to see the latest. Very, very different brand now and not as exciting as a grown adult. My father hated the S-Type, but I liked how the navigation system in it was a larger colour screen, unlike the half-assed monochrome LCD system in the 2000MY XJs that was small ASF and a joke by comparison. X308 XJ being due for replacement in 2002 with X350, meant they weren't interested in doing a colour LCD screen like in the S-Type and chucked that silly BS in there. Even the MY2000 XK range got a much better colour LCD NAV system, than the 2000 XJ (launched September 1999). As a young tech geek, I was annoyed, but of course my dad didn't care. He just was terribly arrogant towards the S-Type.

@@jmin8400 Possibly a laminate fault then, I assumed it was plastic by the way it cracked, not with the grain, it looked like how a plastic trim piece cracks when you pry on it in the wrong place! I'd always wanted a jaguar, the older xj shape was something that appealed to me growing up, I set my heart on owning one but at the time good xj models were few and far between and the s-types were reaching that trough in price, I paid £600 it was mint in terms of interior and bodywork, plenty of MOT and a fully stamped up main dealer service history, it was a much loved example. It had a couple of issues, the central locking would work fine one time then would unlock and lock, then the passenger door would double lock, not great when the passenger can't get out lol ⚠️😯 A slight misfire I quickly diagnosed to a vacuum leak on one of the hoses which I managed a temp repair. I drive a 1969 Daimler V8 250, video on my channel, very similar to the old mk2 jag. The s-type I had shared many similarities and you could clearly see the heritage when I parked them side by side! The satnav in it was quite a surprise, yes not many had them fitted, most have a cubby hole, I believe it was a £1200 option at new? It was a bit of a fiddle to input the address, one character at a time, no option to input post code and the maps were 18 years out of date lol so, much fun was had watching the arrow pointer crossing empty fields when we were actually on a 10 year old bypass lol but I could forgive it for that, most of the roads were there. I even had all the booklets for the satnav and original software CD, I never tried updating it, the CD unit for the satnav was in the boot. The plan was to sort out the central locking issue, keep it and enjoy it for a few years before selling it later when the prices inevitably went up. But the issue was beyond my scope, the only way to properly diagnose it was take it to a main dealer at great expense and pay out probably more than what I paid for the car! Or substitute locks and control modules for known good units to pinpoint the faulty component, I suspected it was one or more of the door locks, which are very complicated units with micro switches and sensors etc The whole system is a real nightmare to diagnose as there are at least a couple of other control units that are involved in the central locking system and the fault was intermittent! Sharing the Ford Lincoln engine actually worked in my favour a couple of times, a new water pump,, the Ford part around £40 the jag equivalent part was 3 or 4 times the price, a few other savings were made. Overall I enjoyed owning and driving the car very much, it just wasn't practical for me as a daily drive, I do miss it though. 😊😎👍

@@pdtech4524 Sorry, just saw this! Very nice read! I am glad you saved money using other from Ford components, but I didn't know you got it secondhand. Silly me. £600 seems like a good deal, for you to just be having central locking issues. I think for those without GPS in the pre-2002 versions, you got a storage drawer. That was a more common sight for me, than a black LCD screen when not in use. Seeing an S-Type with navigation 20+ years ago, was like spotting treasure LOL. For me as a young tech geek then, I fancied seeing the occasional car equipped with factory in dash GPS navigation. As for the Daimler 250 V8, quite interesting how you've owned both a Mark 2 and the facsimile S-Type. Not many S-Type owners could ever have laid claim to that, since most I imagine were very fickle. In terms of the XJ market, I can't say that I am surprised. It makes sense. My father still is holding onto his X308s and X350s, even if he's gone to Range Rover.

The X Type and S Type was the launch of total wrong ways for Jaguar. Cheapest interior with Ford technology under the skin. Fake wood, cheap plastic etc. Not even to mention modern Jaguars whom could also be Hyundais, Peugeots or Kias. You would not even see and feel any differences... Jaguar died with the X350, even though the X300 was the last real Jaguar.

@@jmin8400 welcome to the new world of fake Jaguars. Fake wood, partly fake leather, rest cheapest thin leather, fake carbon today, downsized little engines for half children etc etc etc. Real Jaguars are out of production since 2009. The X350 was the last model comcidered being a Jaguar. The mess started all with the S Type, followed by the X Type, which was a Ford Mondeo in real. Sad story.

@@houseofwine7704 I hate newer Jaguar interiors indeed and the interior fit and finish like you do, but real wood is used. Especially under Ford ownership days, was wood a focal point. Any kind of crap caricature was designed for Jaguar (X200, X400), just as long as it had some semblance of Connolly leather and real wood trim. It wasn't fake nor is it today. The design might suck otherwise, but real wood is there, whenever trim is specified. It's the only thing Jaguar holds onto today, in terms of "tradition". I know this because I worked Jaguar, at Whitley in Coventry and left when my proposals for quality improvements, always exceeded a ridiculously low budget defined by upper management and TATA looming overhead. Plus, deliberately low salary offers after getting my MBA to deter a promotion.

Thanks for your thoughts, l would have liked to hear more about the history of the good the bad times at jaguar. I have 2002 X Type basic model 99,890 klms, an elderly couple had the car, husband passed away, parked in garage for years. Roof lining has dropped, only drivers door will open driver's well slight thud at rear wheels when going over bumps, but still l like the car. Take care 👍
