Even if you only do a few minutes warmup and cooldown strapless, it's 100% worth feeding this into your sessions.

Asditional benefit: when you do an all out session and inevetably end up on the floor (crying), your feet won't still be stuck on the foot-strechers, making you look like a fish.

Stan Pocock wrote that whenever his father George Pocock was along with the coach in the launch sooner or later the coach would call "feet out!". He seemed to think it was essential to getting correct mechanics of the stroke.

It really is. And it's not just for the sake of technique too - I row the HYROX 1Km with feet out, as it guarantees efficiency. If I were in the straps, who knows how I'd flap about when I was so exhausted!!

Also the rail slopes down to the flywheel.

True, but the same thing happens on machines that don't slope down.

Definitely something I try and remember to do on the low intensity rows, by the time you are 10 minutes into the row you have forgotten that you are strapless 😂

True. It’s usually just the first 5 strokes that the danger lurks!!

I used to always row strapless. Maybe I’ll give it a try again!

It's well worth even doing warm up and cool downs strapless. (Something I'll say in the comments)

Feet out improved my technique, still do 20 22, 24 rate feet out. Cheers

For me, it’s a habit thing. If I get in the habit of warming up and cooling down strapless, it really helps.

@RowAlong Workouts thank you for this explanation. I will work my way up to not using straps. Side question... What would be the best footwear to use ?? Flat shoes with a wide toe box for better transfer of power like powerlifting would it apply the same in rowing for more effective workout?

I’m glad you liked it. As for shoes, a flat sole with very little heel rise works best. The Adidas Powerlifting II was all the rage about 5 years ago. Converse Allstar work well also. There’s a lot of chatter about how the soft sole on a running shoe or gym shoe will soak up power. But really, unless you’re already rowing a 6:00 2k and looking for every last 0.1 watt to get you marginally faster, for most it’s not the spongy sole that is the problem. It’s the higher, chunkier heel that is the issue. I try to row mostly in socks or bare feet. But as I’m training for HYROX at the moment, I need to train in the shoes I’ll be wearing on the day. I hope this helps?

@@rowalong yes it does help 🙂. I just started rowing on a cheap but decent magnetic rower and found that wearing my Whitin shoes feels a lot better than something with a cushion on it in the heel. I think I'll try socks out also once I get stronger. Thanks for responding and the input sir!

I put my Concept 2 is on slides. Haven’t used the straps since. The slides (or any other dynamic) require decent technique and the straps really aren’t needed.

I actually filmed a section of me on the RP3 saying exactly this. But the video was going on too long as it was. I am going to post as a short - as you’re right, it’s important info to know.

After using the concept2 for a few months, I found that my technique was still bad. I worked for 2 months without belts (over 90h, over 1.3 million km). It helped :)

That's around 14,444 km an hour which looks doable for a strong rower (I do 10,000 m in around 43 minutes and that's enough for me) but even so, that's also around 1.5 hours every day over around 2 months. That's just savage🤐

@@DaveNeve Thanks to this, a few months later, at the age of 57, I did 15564m in an hour.
