This comprehensive video is an update to a prior video I've done reviewing the Rowenta DG8520 Perfect Steamer Iron. In this video, I bring up several discussion points to include whether you can use distilled water in your iron--why and why not? Additionally I'll show you how to lift the removable water tank from the base. This is an excellent iron and this video will go into detail about the many key features this iron has to offer.

Wonderful to know! I love the soleplate in that it really does a nice job of protecting more delicate fabrics and in that the soleplate takes on the glues and adhesives that we sewers use during our sewing, I'd much rather keep the iron's baseplate clean and let the after-market soleplate take on the glues! Many thanks for your update--great to know where to get one!

Really great job explaining the iron, and thorough! Thank you. I really like that the tank is completely removable because I live in Vegas and our water is weeeird. It's super hard and I end up with not only calcification in my humidifier, but also this orange slimey stuff that I think is some type of algae? Maybe? Any who, it's great that it's removable so I can clean it out. I would definitely go heavy on the distilled light on the tap here, but being able to mix it at least a little bit would be great. I run through water in my current iron super fast cause it's so dry here and that seems to be a great option!

Many thanks for your nice words and you're absolutely right...being able to blend distilled and tap water will make a difference particularly where you live. I live in a forest and we have well water and it's delicious to drink, but likely a bit heavy on the minerals. Honestly, I'm mostly distilled in my machine. Once my repair guy said the tank won't react badly to distilled, that's my go-to water source. I know there is some serious science behind this, but it's worked for a number of years and my iron continues to be wonderful.

I have been thinking about this type of iron, (I have a regular Rowenta that I love, can't believe I found it at Goodwill. It was really gunked up inside, Won't begin to explain here how I finally got it cleaned out!) Anyway, I think your information was presented in an excellant manner, not so technical as some are. You were very precise in your presentation. It felt like you were just explaining the functions to a friend. I really like that. Oh by the way, I actually had to turn volume down, but am listening with earbuds. AWESOME JOB! Thank you so much.

You are just so sweet! I know that I can ramble on, call my sewing equipment by actual people names and just get deep in the weeds, so your nice comments are so terrific--thank you so much and I figure you absolutely had your hands full with trying to clean an awful iron. When my family goes to a VRBO to ski, I always am chief cook and always take a serious sewing project and equipment along with me. I no longer rely on the VRBO to have a 'clean' iron to work with--every time it's a hot mess, so I bring a baby iron. Clean irons are good irons! You take care and best to you and your loved ones this year--

I am getting brown water stains when I start ironing my first job. I don’t have terrible hard water & I have emptied the calc spoon twice when it started blinking. It has been a about a month since blinking. I use the iron 4-5 days a week. It’s maddening since I don’t know when to expect it happening & I dive into a job & the staining starts with the steam. Thank you,
@peregrinedesigns1020
@peregrinedesigns1020 3 жыл бұрын
You know...I might try and use just distilled water and see if that doesn't help a bit with brown staining. I'm certainly not an expert by any means, but like you, I would suspect it's the water. Worst case, take it to a repair place and ask them. You've paid a bunch of money for this iron and it's worth repairing if it can be. They might be able to give it a good clean and give great pointers on what to do and what not to do. Hope this is helpful...

Well doggone...that was frustrating! That would have made me crazy and I'm so sorry you've gotten the run around. I wish I could find the soleplate (it's still unavailable at Amazon), but when I went to Rowenta.com, under the accessories tab there looked to be a soleplate that might fit (ZD7900D1). I can't say for sure it will work, but it does look like the one I bought via Amazon. I'm sorry I can't be more help--the soleplate is certainly helpful. The danger is, is the soleplate apparently ships from France, so what could go wrong with that? I wish I could be more helpful though... Best of luck...and so sorry about the runaround.

Is the DG8510 the same as the DG8520? Looks like one is blue and one is purple. There is a price difference on Amazon, but they are both coming up as the same item.
@peregrinedesigns1020
@peregrinedesigns1020 3 жыл бұрын
Dang, that's a great question. I honestly don't know the difference, but after looking at Amazon, it looks like the 8510 is quite similar to the 8520; however, it does look like the 8510 has the auto shut off feature after 8 minutes. Personally, I wouldn't like that--I sew too much and need that iron on all the time and don't want to wait for the iron to heat up after inactivity. It's certainly a preference though, but I'm OK with an iron being on for as long as I'm sewing.

Hello, This can be auto-detected the clothes with different fabric materials? No movement, Rowenta auto stop or clothes will be burned? Appreciate for your time
@peregrinedesigns1020
@peregrinedesigns1020 3 жыл бұрын
If I'm reading your question right...there isn't a way for the iron to know what type of fabric you're ironing...that would be a great feature though. And, there isn't an auto shut-off on this particular iron to make sure you don't leave it on fabric too long. I personally don't want an auto shut off feature...I iron all day long and want the iron on for as long as it's turned on and don't want to wait for it to warm up after being unattended for 10 minutes. That's just my preference. There are a lot of great irons out there that DO have an auto shut off though, but unfortunately, no iron I know will shut off in time so you don't burn your fabric. They'll shut off after 8 minutes, but not after 30 seconds of being on your fabric. Great question though and many thanks-- hope this helps.
@peregrinedesigns1020
@peregrinedesigns1020 3 жыл бұрын
I stand corrected...many irons will indeed shut down after 30 seconds of being in one place. I don't think this iron will do that (but I'm not sure). I've never left the iron unattended on fabric for 30 seconds, so don't hold me to that, but I'm not sure this will shut down. The do have a DG8510 that I'm looking at the description and that one looks like it'll shut down after 30 seconds. Many apologies for bad assumptions on my part.

Can you set up a small, separate ironing pad just for paper piecing near your sewing machine? I have a snack table on legs that I put right angle to my machine. Separate iron (small Rowenta travel iron , can be non steam if you don't add water) that I use at that station. It is great for the smaller units like paper piecing, freezer paper piecing, etc. I am planning to purchase this steam station for my larger ironing station that i use for long border pressing, pressing tops, yardage, etc.

My 1-year-old Rowenta Perfect Steam Pro just started to act up. During use early this week it literally leaked about a cup's worth of water onto my shirt as I was steaming. No idea what happened to it, but I bought another from Amazon. I can't go without this steamer as it's too darn good! The only downside is that my previous steam pro only lasted about 1 year.

Understand completely about the need for such a valuable workhorse. When my Rowenta was making such a noise, I realized from the viewer remarks, there was something amiss. I took it to the appliance repair and they quickly fixed and returned it to me. Worth the investment of having it repaired. Should your next Rowenta give you a problem, I would encourage you to try having it repaired versus buying another new one. Surprisingly, I have an older type model that I keep on hand should my current iron have an issue. That works for me. Good luck and happy ironing :)

Have you had any trouble with spitting or leaking? I bought mine used and its leaking and spitting out calcium, and even with pliers I can't turn the calcium cleaning knob. I'm afraid I've gotten duped. This is an amazing review by the way, and you have a beautiful spirit

Thank you so much for your kind words. I don't have much problem with spitting or leaking but I honestly use predominantly distilled water as my well water has a bit of minerals. Using distilled water though might exacerbate the spitting (but I'm not sure about that). I love this iron and paid a pretty penny for it and when it misbehaves, I don't hesitate to take it to the appliance repair folks and have it worked on. If you can't turn the cleaning knob, I would consider taking it in for a service. The service folks are pretty candid about what works and what doesn't and more importantly 'why'? I figure I'll just have her serviced until she doggone near explodes and then buy another :)

Quick Rundown of Rowenta Steam/Generator Stations 1. Are they better than standard Irons 1000% yes. lightweight and Functional so you breeze through clothes like an AR-15!! Now that we got this out the way- A. Rowenta Pressure Iron and Steamer Pro Steam Station DG5030. "oldest" model cheapest price on the internet cons (Big con) you have to wait until it cools to re-fill water, so yes it is a pain but if your single or you only iron maybe three garments at a time you could pull it off for daily use. B. Rowenta Microsteam Pro Precision Perfect Station Steam Iron DG8430 "Older" than the Current Model. more Expensive but you can refill on the fly without needing to cool anything down. Cons-because of the refill anytime function it has a pump that makes noise (Like a small waterpump) I listen to loud music while I Iron so it's not so bad but if you iron in the same room as your husband sleeps it could be an issue. also, it is still made in France so quality is Top Notch and this is why I passed up on the newest model. C. Rowenta DG8624U1 Perfect Pro Station "New". only bad thing made in China so read reviews. D. ROWENTA SILENCE STEAM PRO DG9248. "Hot off the Press New" Silent feature could be a gamechanger, but if it is also made in china its a toss up, only time will tell. --Thanks Al

I would think if you're ironing basically clothing, you can get away from the sole plate if you like. I need it because I sew a lot and use adhesives and interfacings which can gum up the sole plate. I also iron more delicate fabric that can't take the heat well which is perfect with the sole plate....so for me it's pretty important, but perhaps not for you as much. If you find though you're gumming up your soleplate, then I would consider the purchase. Happy ironing!!

The green light will go blink until the steam is ready for delivery. It takes a few minutes (maybe 3 or 4) to get enough steam generated before it'll actually steam. Your iron is doing just what it's supposed to do, so no worries on your part--wait until the light stays on constantly and you're ready to iron. Hope this helps.
