Aram Training

Tim Roth, winner of the Bronze medal at the Tokyo World Rowing Championships 2019, sent me his footage and asked for a review. Well, actually somebody else asked for a review in the comments and Tim saw it, and sent his footage to me.
Anyway, his rowing style is fantastic, but not flawless. In this video, I am trying to point out what makes the difference between very, very fast and possibly world champion.

Very good analysis Aram and the footage was fine for explaining this particular point related to the smooth and gentle catch having an effect on the end of the leg drive - brilliant !

Very good analysis. I worked on not going so deep at the catch and the release improved. Thank you for the input you give.

Great rowing! If we keep telling rowers to move forward during the recovery they will always have to turn their body mass in the opposite direction after the catch. If we tell them to sit almost motionless and let the feet move towards them there will be no changing direction of the mass at the catch. So there will be no diving into the catch anymore. And I will advise this excellent rower to seek more height above the water after the finish. Hands can move horizontally in the direction of the catch. Rob Kluvers, Ins & Outs Rowing

In my opinion the main problem with leaning forword just befor the catch is that you have to relax your back muscles to do so. With most rowers this leads to uncontrolled lifting of the body when leg push starts.

As usual great analysis with clear explanation. I have a question though: in previous video you also mentioned the height of the blade above the water during the recovery. In that particular video you said that there was advantage to keep the blade almost touching the water. Does this still applies in this video? Thank you

This must be a misunderstanding. Having the blade too close like Tim does is not beneficial for the efficiency of the stroke cycle. Sorry for being not clear enough

@@AramTraining yes sorry my mistake. I meant "there was NO advantage". I remember saying that the blade will need to go up to have enough space to get to the square position. And that could cause unwonted weight on the handles. Cheers

is his seat moving beyond the pin line on the catch, or just the angles filmed at? is that good?

I have a question Aram, if you move your feet nearer to yourself does this enable you to keep the blade in the water longer? Do you have a video that explains feet position.

Good point. I can make a video about that. What specifically should I explain?

I was wondering if you could give me some training advice. I'm a 16 year old rower but wanting to improve my overall fitness and aerobic capacity and endurance. I have a rowing machine and turbo trainer and a heart rate meter. So I was wondering if you could recommend me anything to improve my rowing and general fitness, and help me for next season?

In the morning do 16-18km 20s/m at T2, next day maybe do a bike instead and repeat. Afternoon do weights or speedwork. Make sure to eat plenty and have atleast a 6 hour break inbetween sessions :)
