Not true. Roxanne is a legend, but there were other female artists who recorded songs before she came along. Her success is one-part skill and one-part timing. If she never came out, there would still be other female rappers recording songs, and I say this with respect as I'm a big fan of Shante. Like she said, no one expected hip-hop to last very long back then. So, yes, she's an important figure who dropped a monumental song. But her career lagged and she basically fizzled away, for reasons obvious in the movie. As far as blueprint, Shante was following a blueprint. She didn't create that style, which is why I sent the link. Shante had a few good songs, but no album when she was at the height of her short career. The only real comparison among the group you mention is Salt & Pepa, who came out right after Shante. (They had the same rap pattern, and S&P initially followed the same rhyme blueprint that Shante followed). To say without Shante, there wouldn't have been other female recording artists is a stretch. Remember, The Sequence dropped a big song in 1979. If anything, female rappers weren't sticking with the art form because no one expected it to last. Kool Moe Dee, who was considered one of the best in NYC, stopped rapping for a while to attend college. What's most admirable about Shante is what she's accomplished after her rap career concluded. She's a very powerful woman who truly cares about community and social achievement. She's in the national public light again because of this great movie, but she's been active socially for a long time.
