This video demonstrates three methods of reducing or eliminating twist loss in the tail of a long tail cast on. How and why twist lost occurs is explained, followed by the three methods. Last week I started a blanket with 300 stitches and the cotton yarn was getting so untwisted, I spent more time re-twisting the yarn every 10 stitches, than I spent casting on! I knew something was weird, but I wasn't sure exactly why it was happening. Your clear and logical explanation was perfect for my science-brain. Thank you!

Can I just say that I love your KZfaq videos. What a relief it is to know that the twist-loss is less my fault, and more a result of the yarn's construction, but it's an even bigger relief to know that this is something that can be mitigated! Thank you! The long tail cast on I was taught is the untwisted method, and I had no idea. My brain got so confused watching someone else do the long tail cast on the other way and I thought I was doing it wrong. It messed with my head for a moment there! I can’t ask my grandma- she passed 22 years ago. Thanks for clearing up my mind!

My exact dilemma and you have solutions! In my knitting circles I'm considered to be too observant: "It's not a big deal. Why do you look so closely at everything. Just cast on and knit..." I was excited when I intuited that I could cast on with a purl stitch and have the smooth side for the right side of the work. I quietly kept that revelation to myself. I'm excited for when I cast on my next project! I'm in the middle of one now so for the sake of continuity in the garment, I wont be incorporating these gems of knowledge straight away. Tk you for sharing your knowledge.

I’m a knitter who has recently taken up crochet and just finished Janie Crow’s Fruit Garden CAL. I noticed that as I was crocheting, the yarn was unwinding as I crocheted and I am now starting on her 2nd CAL Love is Enough. I had just started on my 1st motif when I saw this video. OMG - what a difference by just wrapping the yarn the opposite way around my finger. You are a God send. Every time I used one of your tips, coffees on me! Thank you so much.

For crochet, you could use a yarn that is z-plied (twist angle is / like the center of the letter Z). They are far and few between, as most plied yarns are S-plied (angle \). Or, use a yarn that isn't plied, like a chainette or blown yarn.

Well, finding this video was timely!! I've always noticed my yarn untwisting when I cast-on, it was annoying but I just moved on! I'm working on a cowl and the untwisting of the yarn is more than annoying, to the point that I am ready to give up on the project. I am going to frog (only seven rows, no big deal!) and analyze what I am doing so I don't untwist my yarn and I think I will be much happier with this project AND the yarn! Thank you for taking the time to share your amazing knowledge in a way that is easy to understand!

I usually let up on the tension to allow the twist to travel back up the yarn. But the other tips were great. I am going to work on my purl cast-on.

WOW! Always something interesting to learn, thanks! On the other side of the coin, I'm a thrower and usually have the problem of increasing twist as I knit along. I mentioned this to a woman I've bought yarn from and she said she's never had that problem so she could not tell me what it could be. I think part of it is the way I tension the yarn around my fingers: first, clockwise around my pinkie then, clockwise around my index finger. Your visual of the directions around the needle makes sense (gotta start practicing Continental 😳). Thanks, again. 💖🙌🙌🙌😺

I had never noticed this before, so I did a "test" LTCO while watching the video. If I reset between each stitch, there is no loss of twist. If I do not reset, I had loss of twist in my working yarn and extra twist in my tail; not a surprise, I am a mirror knitter.

Thanks so much for this. I am one bothered by the twist loss! My preferred way of knitting is eastern counterclockwise which equals even more twist loss! It’s bugging me so much that I’m teaching myself western clockwise knitting for a baby sweater I am knitting for a friend. I have to watch every loop; SLOW!

Thank you for this video, so helpful! I did notice the twist loss but I drop the yarn and pick it back up, so annoying. I think I'll try method 2. I used to use the German twisted cast on a lot, I wonder if it has the same twist loss issue? I reverted back to long tail because I kept running out of yarn using german twisted cast on for larger projects.

The Twisted German CO creates a twist within the edge, which hides the twist loss (you don't lose less twist in the yarn ply, but you're adding an actual twist/loop, which hides it. You can avoid running out of yarn for the tail for either LTCO or Twisted German by spit splicing the two ends of a center pull ball together, and starting the CO at/near the join. This requires the yarn to be non-superwash wool No need to measure off a tail. When the CO is complete, cut the thumb yarn, leaving 4-6'' to weave in later. If your yarn won't spit spice, you can just start the cast on with the two separate tails, and again, cut the thumb yarn when you've completed the CO. That leaves you with two extra tails to weave in, but you don't have to worry about running out of tail.

I was always running out of tail yarn, having to rip them out until I finally got it right, then I decided to try using the working end around my thumb to form the loops instead. Voilà! Hardly any length is used up from the tail around my index finger, so I could make so cast on so much more this way. Is there a reason no one else does it this way? By the way, your video here was terrific, very clear, and I’m sharing it with my knitting friends. Thank you so much.

Some people do CO this way, usually unintentionally, just positioning the tails around their fingers however they end up. The reason why it wouldn't typically be done that way is that the working yarn is used to create the sts on the needle, so the working yarn forms the last stitch of the CO onto the needle, and then the next stitch that is worked on the first row/round would be worked with the same yarn, so that the sts are connected to each other with that same bit of yarn. It's not a disaster to swap the yarns for the CO, and to use the working yarn to form the edge, if you have found that to be a good solution for your own knitting. There are some pretty good rules of thumb for quickly estimating the yarn needed for the tail, and even some methods for casting on without having to measure at all. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9h4m7xexr_Oe6s.html

So this is giving me an immediately neater result in my cast on with S plied yarn when I use method #2 by wrapping the thumb yarn in the opposite (counter clockwise) direction as you'd shown, and forming the stitch differently, based on where I need to put my needle into the thumb yarn to create the stitch. But it seems to me that it is only the base that gets affected by this, not the formed stitch, which I believe still behaves as Western with the leading leg in front. At least when I tried to knit the first row from the cast on, I did not find I needed to work through the back loops of the cast on stitches to re-orient the stitch mount. Do I have this correct? If so, you have shown me some magic here for truly tightening up my base without having to cast on in purl. Thanks, Roxanne!

The thumb loop is twisted opposite, but because you knit it immediately with the working yarn, and wrap it/pick it in the same way you would normally, the stitch mount of the loops on the needle are not affected. It's the direction you wrap/pick the working yarn that produces an Eastern or Western mounted stitch on the needle.

@@RoxanneRichardson This makes total sense hearing it, and doing it, that the wrapping creates the mount. Coming up, I plan to use this twist-preserving thumb mount with my next cast on, above it which will sit a garter stitch border. I will test it with a needle size smaller, and with the same size needle as the garter stitch, to see if I really need to go down a needle size, now that I have a great way to tighten up the cast on base stitches. I had really been disliking the relatively giant loops that comprise the first row of knitting garter off the standard thumb mount LTCO and it will be very interesting to see if the twist-preserving thumb mount plays any role in taming this. I am not a loose knitter (tight-tending, if anything) and I don't get this sloppy first row loop effect outside of garter stitch (at least I haven't noticed it in other stitch patterns). Can't wait to test this with this great tool you have taught for improving the cast on foundation.

Great tutorial and explanations, I was blown away! However, the twist loss in the tail doesn't drive me nearly as nuts as the twist GAIN in the working yarn. The working yarn gets so kinky, I try to minimize the distance between the yarn in my hand and the ball/skein itself, or I hold the ball up after and let the needles with the cast-on stitches dangle and untwist, but sometimes that's physically difficult (no room, in a car, whatever). Is there a fix for too much twist in the working yarn?

Without regard to whether or not I was trying to avoid losing tail twist, I would use the LTCO purlwise if there was a reason why I needed row 1 of the project to absolutely be a RS row, with the smooth side of the CO facing.

I use the German Twisted (Old Norwegian) Cast On because it is much more substantial (and stretchy) than a regular Long Tail Cast On (which give a rather meager edge to fabrics). How do I use this method and get the best of both worlds? The long tail cast on is just not good enough anymore now that I've graduated from it, but I want something with more substance (keeping my twist, if possible)

What is the benefit of using the other direction cast on? Purl bump method? Is it best to do a looser tension with the normal continental cast on then. Mechanical spinning vs manual spinning changes, historically? Thanks for the topic.

There is no "best." There are usually multiple ways of getting to the same end point, and most knitters will find that they have a preferred path to getting there. Occasionally, they will find that the particular project they are working on needs a different path. Some knitters like trying different paths just for the heck of it, or to see if a different path suits them better. For most knitters, it will be enough to loosen their grip on the yarn every couple of sts, in order to let the twist back into the yarn. Others hate the loss of twist and will want to adopt the second method. Occasionally, someone will want Row 1 to have the smooth side of the CO facing so will CO using Method 3, which causes the bumpy side to face during CO. Method 3 is useful regardless of whether or not you are concerned about losing twist. It's a technique used when you want the smooth side on Row 1. It just happens to also solve the twist loss problem.

New knitter here- thanks for this. Any chance you’d be able to address twist loss in regular knitting *for a leftie*? I am assuming it’s what you also address here but my stitches split with acrylic worsted medium and it’s very difficult to knit well- I don’t know how to adjust my knitting to prevent this. Thank you for solving part of my splitting problem!

Handedness shouldn't affect twist. The twist of the yarn combined with the direction you bring the yarn around the needle is what affects addition or loss of twist. If you are a mirror knitter (maybe that's what you're referring to, regarding being a leftie), again, it's the direction the yarn goes around the needle that will affect the twist. So if you're bringing the yarn around clockwise, and you are using an s-plied yarn, you're going to lose twist. This happens with Eastern knitters (those who knit off the left hand needle, as for standard knitting, but wrap the yarn clockwise). The only way to avoid twist loss would either be to change the direction you wrap the yarn around the needle, or to work with yarns that are z-plied (you can find those in the U.S. and western Europe, but they aren't as common as S-plied yarns).

Crazy question-does twist loss affect the end product or is it something that only the knitter would notice? (I’m a ‘novice knitter’!)

Do you knit in the standard "Western" method, so that the sts move from the left needle to the right needle, and the working yarn goes around the needle counterclockwise as you work your knits and your purls? Do the sts sit on the needle with the leading leg (leg of the st closest to the tip) over the front of the needle for all sts?

@@sherrikent6628 If you knit in the standard way and are losing twist with an s-twist yarn, there may be something else going on to cause the twist loss. Best way to figure it out would be to post in my Ravelry group with some photos.
