I grew Up hearing The 2 names Roy Dias and Dulip Mendis. My father was a die hard cricket fan and always used to glue to the TV whenever their was a cricket match. I still remember the day Sri Lanka won their first test 11th Sep 1985 and How Rumesh caught Cheatan Sharma of his own bowling. JR appeared in our Black and White 20 inch TV and declared a National holiday. Good Old days.

Yes.! that was Kapil dav I was at p.Sara seven down when got to the ground..thought match can end up with a draw..and it was crazy atmosphere..for the first time I saw drunken dancing cricket crazy girls enjoying the game of cricket.only and the last test I watched in any ground till now JR announced a national holiday next day.! Vivid memories.!

As an Indian who also grew up watching them play in the early 80s, I would say Roy Dias was very elegant, technically correct and minimum effort player (kind of the like the OG for Mahela J) vs. Duleep Mendis was a biffer (hard hitter who had a solid defense or the aggressive shot and minimum gears in between). Both the most key players for Sri Lanka on their first tour to India with the only match in Chennai - highest scorers in both innings. I think Mendis may have scored century in each innings of that test.

I had the priviledge of watching this unsung hero of cricket live in Chennai. Right cricketer played during the wrong time to put it. Cover drives n square cuts were his trademark shots 🥰😇 A legend without a doubt. Cheers!!!

Now a days when we see old time great batsman , we feel ,those batsman were very much unlucky ones because they were forced to face that time great bowlers not with a now a days quality bat but with just a ordinary wooden plank. And still they create many records.. Hats off.

He looks technically very sound but no one can touch the height of Dsilva. Perhaps the best on Asian tracks. He was a absolute Don. His inning against India and Aus 1996 wc was so dominating.

Arjuna claims Roy to be the most technically correct player SL ever had. However, he never admitted the greatness of any SL player who played after his era being a politician LOL

Roy Dias is the best batsman ever produced in sri Lanka. Then come Aravindha. Sanga and rest. Roy's ability helped to gain test statest to srilanka.

on a drier out field Roy could've easily scored at least 8 more boundaries, and reached very much closer to 100 or even beyond..

yeah I also heard that he scored somewhere around 12 fours in that 50. Even the Indian newspapers were gushing praises about his inning. Sunil Gavaskar always talks very highly about Roy Dias.
