Күн бұрын

On this episode of The Overlap, I sit down with legendary football manager Roy Hodgson, where we reflect on his incredible 47-year career in the game. From managing huge names like Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos at Inter Milan, to his short time managing Liverpool and his tenure as the head coach of the England national team, Hodgson has been at the forefront of football for decades.
In this interview, Roy shares his experiences managing some of the biggest names in football at Inter Milan, and the challenges he faced in bringing together a team of such talented individuals. He also discusses his time managing Liverpool, one of the most iconic football clubs in the world, and the pressure he felt to live up to the high expectations of the fans.
Hodgson also reflects on his time as the head coach of the England national team, where he faced both triumphs and setbacks on the international stage. He shares his insights on what it takes to manage a national team and the unique challenges that come with that role.
Finally, Hodgson shares his thoughts on the future of football and what the future holds for him past his second spell at Crystal Palace. So join me as we take a deep dive into the fascinating career of Roy Hodgson, one of the most respected and experienced managers in football.

As a West Brom fan, he is a brilliant coach. The style of football we played under Roy was the best I've ever seen at The Hawthorns. As an 8 year old at the time, that was my favourite albion team ever because we had players like Foster, Reid, Ridgewell, Olsson, Dorrans, Brunt, Gera, Morrison, Long and Odemwingie. As a fan, I went into every single match believing we would win the game and I haven't felt that way since after he left. Even if we didn't win, you knew the players would work hard and never give in. I always remember one game at home to Wolves where we beat them 2-0 and you had players putting their heads infront of boots, I think Olsson almost broke his leg trying to clear one off the line. Great times!

Am a Palace fan. Can confirm, in his first season with us with RLC, Cabaye etc. and in his spell at the moment with us, we are playing the best football I've ever seen at Palace. Palace were panicking with Viera, now Roys here, the players have calmed down and realized their good players again. Simple straightforward messages and players love that. An insanely underated manager that should be chilling on a beach somewhere but can't because its in his DNA that he must continue to work this conundrum of football out even at the age of 75. As a Liverpool fan obviously I don't hold Roy Hodgson in the highest regard, but his time at Liverpool was a very long time ago and he was never the problem at the time, rather just a symptom of it. I've always felt Roy is a thoroughly decent coach, very knowledgeable man and an extremely capable manager, but he was just never right for Liverpool but very few are. I do feel Patrick Vieira was stitched up slightly by the fixtures - they were never going down realistically - but the way Roy has changed how Palace play in recent weeks says a lot, especially Eze's improvement which shows Roy still has the ability and knack to tap in to what young players need.

@@Midge-xn9tp That doesn't always work. majority top top managers make their players the way they want rather than what suits the players. I remember conte tried that when he became our manager. he played a system that suited the players but we weren't playing well. he ditched that, implemented his system and won us the PL winning 14 games in a row. It depends. Especially nowadays with pep, de zerbi, etc, players play the way that managers want rather than the other way round.

Maybe the best manager West Brom have ever had. Would take him back in a heartbeat, whatever age.

As a Liverpool fan I really like Roy. Think it was a massive shame it didn't work out for him. I don't think he joined us at the right time, having to sign free agents and a tiny transfer budget it was always going to be difficult

He took over from a legend in Benitez and a club that had probably been in it's worst position since the early 50s arguably although after Kenny left in 1991 it was awful after that as well for a few years

Roy's point on silverware is spot on. Football fans nowadays are so simple, focusing on just "HoW mAnY tRoPhIeS?" when football just isn't that simplistic.
