Every time I see this it gets me. An important ad and some great acting from Mr Bolam too. I have to say it's sad to read some of the comments about James Bolam with such negativity. I live close to him and Sue Jameson and got to know him really well over the years. He is a really kind and generous man who is very well loved and respected locally. The whole Rodney Bewes thing was blown out of proportion by the press. Dont believe all you read and hear in the papers.

The trouble starts when you become immobile, can't look after yourself. Relatively speaking, you're still fairly young. A fall, a serious injury, loss of memory, financial or emotional stress, etc. all can change the course of someone's life.

Been on my own 11years,lonliness is agonising, I've been watching re runs of the likely lads,only when i laugh,and other comedies,its brings a lot of joy and happy memories, people shouldn't judge James Bolam and his lovely wife without knowing the facts and the circumstances, this video is heart-wrenching and very identifiable for many people, well done to James Bolam for his portrayal of a lonely man,very well acted by a fine actor😢❤❤❤

Well, why does it upset you exactly? It's not an accident he's had, he's not ill or anything, he's just an elderly man now. You see again, this is part of my argument. TV is always about the moment when everyone's life will become depressing and start falling apart. To be honest, I'me sick of hearing it. It's nothing but death, funerals, accidents, illnesses, loneliness...... Christ, I've had enough.

@ELLA HORNBY, Ha! *I read you!* I understand the positive and humane reason the scriptwriters and producers have the scripts and ad copies composed and directed in a way that is meant to trigger empathy and worry and concern into kinetic action. However, the national and continental and global political agendas to *push us and the other major socially vulnerable populations out to pasture* to just die-off as surplus *"livestock"* to the 0.01% $lavemasters into pathology labs, morgue zinc trays, coffins, urns, sheltered housing or other countries or as a pawn in other ways is *glaringly obvious* to many of us who possess the present capacity and self-respect and critical thinking skills. *Like all other socially vulnerable human groups,* we *must unite* with our activists and allies and *create our own campaign text and action ideas and campaigns* via *en masse, and local, and group, and individual* needs and desires and offerings. Pairing the (reputable independent investigated and monitored) lonely or elderly or disabled or systemically oppressed or marginalised or recovering with the appropriate children or young adults or middle-aged adults or other seniors in need of whatever we can provide as a group and individually is a *simple yet progressive step* toward the solution that too few are enacting. Are you too an activist? :)

Old people can be difficult my late mum used to complain that she hadn’t spoken to anyone all day but if my wife or I phoned her she couldn’t wait to get away anyway she’s past now and I miss her a lot so if your parents are elderly make an effort to communicate.

Dear peggy your as old as you feel and I don't think 60 is old. 95 maybe but not sixty. So longe as you have your health you will be fine. Keep busy and go pit visits art museums garden centres different places of interest and if you have a back garden feed the birds every morning and whistle to them just when your about to feed them so they will be waiting for your company to come to them. Go on you can do that.

Unless you have other problems to do with your health why not get a dog you will have to walk your dog and in doing so it will get you out and about people will start saying hello try and stick to the same route so you meet with mores or less the same people and they will get used to seeing you around and who knows you could find a friend or even a partner to share your life with or go to the same cafe for a coffee people talk more to you if they see you out and about good luck and remember a stranger is just a friend you do not know it takes time but you can make it happen 😉

A lot of nasty comments made about James Bolam, when this should be about Age UK here with misinformation with regards to the truth. Bewes had several successful shows on ITV in the 1970s, people seem to forget that. In truth, Bolam/ the writers only stopped the original Likely Lads, only 6 episodes survived & the BBC had no plans to broadcast them anyway. Bolam also didn't stop Bewes from earning an income from the re-runs because broadcasters showed repeats of Whatever happened to the likely lads quite regularly for years before Bewes sadly passed away. The media manipulated the story to make Bolam look bad.

Hang on, if he was in the war he would have to be at least 93 (assuming this was filmed in 2017). He looks much younger to me - remember old people can BS too. I do feel sorry for him though having to go from Tidworth to Oxford - such a horrible journey, I hear Portsmouth to Normandy wasn't too great also.

@Mercy Jesus, I don't know the original poster's reason for not responding. However, please know that some people rarely check comment responses here at KZfaq because of abuse responses to their posted comments. All types of abuse are literally designed and intended to worsen the health of the recipient or human group toward weakness, vulnerability, reprogramming/reconditioning, overthrowing or surrender, destruction and death. *Just like wars conducted by governmental militaries, and racism, and classism, and shadeism, and patriarchy, and misogyny, and homophobia, and xenophobia, and sizeism, and heteronormative, and... all those who are socially and capitalistically undesirable by the majority human groups. Since abuse, let alone *compounded, barraged abuse,* is effectively traumatic and destructive over time, some cannot afford to subject their health in order to do so. I wish you *best wishes* toward *being incredibly creative and figuring out a solid solution* to assist your mother in the near future. I am sorry to learn that you are too debilitated to attend to her personally. I am also very sorry for her, suffering for such a lengthy period without enough assistance from the state. What a *personality disordered abusive* and inhumanely *hyper-capitalistic* world we have allowed it to become.

James wasn't really an actor as such, he was a real person when given a script he took on that person with such ease, like putting on a coat. In all of the roles that I've seen him in, I don't see James Bolam, I see Terry Collier, Roy Figgis, Clive Peacock etc. I mean, look at how he portrays Roy in this little collage.

I talk to myself a lot. Don’t argue just discuss how lonely I could be but and this a big but everyone, it doesn’t have to be this way. You are lonely because you want to be lonely. Maybe you feel sorry for yourself, maybe you want someone to beat up, yourself. Fight the depression, the isolation and the loneliness and each and everyone of you know what I mean. There are so many paths you can take and you will start to make friends and acquaintances. Try out your local church’s Social activities or classes at the college. What about going along to talks on subjects that interest you? There will be others like yourself there or being a volunteer for a local wildlife or charity group? What about going on special catered holidays for single people? If you are Infirm, pick up the phone, write letters, invite people around for a chat and a cup of tea. Lastly, I try to limit the amount of time spent on the social network which is a poor substitute for a true friendship.

My argument with all this is that, although this advert supports elderly well being, I don't really like the over dramatisation of it all. TV advertising has become something I just try to avoid these days, people are as aware of these things as they want to be, like cancer, funeral costs and every other morbid thing they keep telling us about. Stop ramming it down our throats, we all know they're well meant, but leave us alone aswell.
@paztizzi2719
@paztizzi2719 7 жыл бұрын
You don't need to watch them though. They're there to raise awareness. I wouldn't have realised how bad this situation was for the elderly if I didn't see the TV adverts. I'd admit the only ones that are too much are the 'save the african children' ones urging for money donations, which have being going on non-stop for decades. But the elderly have it bad now and not many people care, and we can't just let that slide.
