Ranger Colin & Julia came to the nest and banded the chicks today and then took their weights. Ranger Sharyn said "Alphanumeric bands are being placed on many chicks early this season as the chicks become more mobile and shift locations. This will ensure that records are kept accurate, and no misidentification can occur.
Ranger Colin bands TF (Top Flat chick) first with an alphanumeric band number E24. They then took his weight which was 8.6kg down 1kg since the last weight check two weeks ago. Both LGL and LGK had been in less frequently since the beginning of July which has resulted in a weight loss for TF. His weight will be rechecked next Tuesday and if it is still low, there might be a supplementary feeding for him.
You may have noticed that TF is moving away from his natal nest lately and spending most of his day and nights now to the right of TFT's nest. It is not a problem with feedings since it is still close to his natal nest and LGK and LGL will still be able to feed him here. In fact, this afternoon, LGK came in at 14:27 and fed TF right in this new spot! ♥ Chicks are becoming more mobile and some do tend to explore and move away from the nest at this stage.
Ranger Colin then banded TFT (Top Flat Track chick) with an alphanumeric band E25. The stainless-steel bands will be placed on the chicks early August. TFT weighed 10kg, down 400g but still above average for a male his age. Sharyn mentioned that "BOK is a larger female than LGL so we would not expect both chicks to be the same size". Thank you for watching!
