What makes a man a King? Aside from genetic luck and a glittering crown, it’s a castle. From the defensive towers erected by William I to secure his conquest of England, to the grand banqueting halls of the Tudors; the luxurious state rooms of the Stuarts and Georgians to the lovingly and expensively maintained residences of the modern royal family. Royal castles and palaces have played witness to the lives of Kings and Queens and many key moments in history. In this three part series, we’ll explore 15 of the most historically important Royal Castles & Palaces of England. Let’s begin with the medieval castles, built to be tough and to impose the King’s might upon his subjects. The comfort and luxury were an afterthought to staying alive during siege warfare. These oldest royal residences in England have nearly a millennial of history under their belts. They have been transformed many times over the years and have served a number of colorful purposes, from seat of democratic government to scene of tyrannical torture and execution. From fabricated namesake of the modern royal family to Queen Elizabeth’s favorite home to this day.

We were just at Windsor this past April. It was really nice, especially knowing it is a working residence! We watched the changing of the guard, there, and were told The Queen was watching from her window across the lawn. 😊 The Tower of London is my top pick for things to see when visiting. The tours with the Beefeaters are fantastic and I LOVE the jewels and the ravens. I''d love to return to England and visit more castles and palaces.

I used to live near Windsor in the 1990s and saw the fire from a bridge near my home. When my parents came to visit a few months later, we went to see Windsor and Buckingham Palace, which had newly been opened to the public and had long queues. In Windsor castle you could still see the charred rooms that had burned. And of course we also went to see the Tower. While I was living in the area, I visited several castles, including Hamptom Court, the Pavillion in Brighton (I loved that! I dreamed of hiding there and stay over night 🤣) and Hever castle. And a couple of lovely gardens, like Sissinghurst.

Hampton Court is really lovely they have gorgeous gardens a very small maze though unfortunately. I remember going to the tennis courts onsite years ago don't know if they're open to the public because of Rona. There are also costume interpreters who roam around and occasionally do talks or little scenes in certain areas. I went there when they were reenacting the different weddings of Henry VIII and we could wear coats to show which side you were on and got to shout long live the King and Queen in the main hall.
