This is an enchanting film made in 1987 and featuring a very rare appearance by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother talking about her greatest love; National Hunt Racing. The early years are described by her Master Of The Horse Sir Martin Gilliat and the later times by Michael Oswald her racing manager. We see the great Special Cargo, so gallant up the Sandown hill and The Argonaught just beaten in rare footage by Desert Orchid in The Holsten Chase at Sandown in 1986. I appear very briefly in this film as a spectator in the Unsaddling Enclosure. I was at Windsor races in February 1987 and remember The Queen Mother being escorted by Terry Biddlecombe who was involved in the production of this film. She had three runners on this day including Sunrising, I remember dear old Fulke Walwyn late in his life standing precariously in thet damp tree lined paddock in what appeared to be leather bedroom slippers. Some wonderful appearances by the QM's jockeys down the years including David Mould

14 years old and Special Cargo was still thundering around Sandown. Like his owner he was full of 'British sheer bloody-mindedness' Sleep well both of you. Neither of you will ever be forgotten.

I enjoy watching the Queen Mother in her element. After viewing this, I believe her daughters truly resemble their father, the King; however, their mannerisms reflect their mum, the Queen Mother! Lovely

The Queen Mother really is my favourite royal whether dead or alive. She seemed very warm and less stoic than the rest of the family. It might have partly to do with the fact that she grew up in a relatively normal life with loving parents and siblings.

@@winstonscott4195 I mean it's significantly less regal and stoic than a royal household. She grew in what would equate to an upper class family but I would imagine the family dynamics were somewhat normal.

I just tear up every single time I see horses magnificent spirit coming through .. here in the U.S. we have a dirty secret and 37% of the horses we see racing are sent to a cruel and slow agonizing death in Mexico slaughterhouse. I have visited a lot and seen the young horses and many people's pets and I will NEVER be able to forget the eyes of these horses because they KNEW and I wanted to save them ALL!! I was able to buy back 1 horse after she walked up to me and literally dropped her head in my hands. I wish that horses would be treated as we treat dogs and cats and be protected from the transfer into Mexico and Canada for slaughter and it be banned all together once and for ALL

Fulke Walwyn sounded as though he had swallowed a frog. Interesting documentary but they left out a whole load of her best horses. Her most prolific winner Game Spirit, her much loved The Rip, Laffy, Gay Record, Silver Dome, Double Star and many more.

Of it's time I'm afraid Jon. Made around '86 I remember the day at Windsor where most of the action was shot - I was there. Tiny crowd on a freezing Monday afternoon. She stood at the back of the stands with the rest of us to view the races. Terry Biddlecombe was technical advisor.

Oh the queen mother. Gracefully looking beautiful at all Dave’s personally not a looker in the queen era age into remotely sexually attractive she reminds me of a woman that would’ve been in the movie the titanic as the boat sinking oblivious to it and wanting some caviar and some wine sent to her room. But nevertheless she was elegant she fit the role quite well even though she did not want change and wanted everything to stay in its ways.. Like a stagnant pool and not having the Jets to rotate the water. And sadly queen Elizabeth today who is an honorable queen I have nothing but respect for her and I’m a hard-working mind and it’s just brilliant. But she does not want to disappoint the queen mother and she didn’t branch out too much as a queen she did but she did not and I really hope that Prince William doesn’t do the same and he branches out and does change and makes a difference same old same old is
