The name of the ruins derived from Gujarati word chhatris, because the roof of the ruins is umbrella shaped, hence the name chhatedi.
The Royal cenotaphs are usually the resting place of rulers of the region.
The chhatedi were constructed by the jadeja rulers in the 18th century.
This place is samadhi sthal of royal families of the bhuj. The ground was used to cremate the king and his family members and then there samadhi was created on the same and they covered the same with beautiful chhatris.
The place was hit by earthquake in 2001 which was also the major reason why the place has been destroyed.
