thanks ~Derek.interesting to know how things tick. i have a brown super nova, and i am loving every ride on it. I have had all sorts of big bikes over a lot of years but now at 72 this is perfect. I especially like the heel and toe gear change as my feet are not as agile as they were. best wishes.

@@davethesafariplanner The seating position is comfortable though I haven’t been out on the bike for longer than 2 hours the standard saddle was OK but when new is hard. The bike does vibrate but it is neither intrusive or that noticeable the there is no buzz or shake and for a single it is pretty smooth .

Thanks for confirming what others have suspected. What I can't figure out is why Royal Enfield went to the trouble of installing a speed limiter on this bike. Given the laws of physics and aerodynamics, the Meteor 350 wouldn't go much over 80 mph (130 kph) without the limiter anyway.

I suspect that removing the electronics speed limitations on this bike is going to become the number one mod. Not because people want to go fast necessarily but it just gives you another tool in your tool kit to stay out of trouble.

@@Bitsforboats one reason I read has to do with Indian taxes; RE fitted the limiter for some tax reason. Another reason I could think of is regulatory BS. In Europe, cars will soon have speed limiters, and you won't be able to exceed the posted speed limit . I thought RE might fit the limiter to prepare for when these blasted things come to bikes...

It's this did a real 80mph on the flat, meaning 70 is achievable a little easier on the uphill stretches, I'd buy one tomorrow. It's just that teeny bit too sluggish for me personally. I don't want a 650 btw. It's probably going to be a bit too heavy for me these days. A reason I've not been interested in the interceptor.

I understand people want to know the topspeed but to be honest. If you want a 350cc that has more than double the power and goes more than twice as fast in acceleration, just buy a KTM Duke 390 for example. Have had the Duke 390 and the vitpilen 401. Have had so many bike. And now I own the meteor. I like to drive this meteor and I knew before it wouldn't go fast but the pleasure to ride with it, is bigger than riding a Duke 390 for example. But it is a personal feeling and doesn't mean the Duke 390 for example is a bad bike, which isn't at all. For me it was only important that I was able to pass the trucks on the highway with some power reserve and that is available. That was my only point in case of acceleration a'd top speed.

It's a big thing for me to know the top speed. I get the comfort, the feel, the way it looks but I need to know if it can do the speed limit on certain roads. They are 4k now and that's not cheap. If I buy one of these I need to know what it is and isn't capable of.

Did I miss something ? Where in this test is it demonstrated that a speed limiter is in effect ? Peak power peak on the Meteor 350 is specified to occur at 6100 rpm. This corresponds to 75*6100/5750 = 79.6 mph (128.1 km/h). Is it because that speed cannot be achieved on the dyne ? FWIW, scaling according to the specified gear ratios (1.040 in 4th and 0.875 in 5th), 6100 rpm in 4th gear would correspond to a speed of 66.9 mph (107.7 km/h).

You are right.. On the official spec sheet enfield says that the Meteor has a maximum speed of 114km/h (70.8 mph) in 4. gear Enfield has tuned this engine to be reliable and frugal. (average consumption of 2.79l/100km). For a modern SOCH moderately long stroked single less than horse pr cubic inch is a bit underwhelming and with a hefty kerb weight of 191kg those 27Nm and 20.2 bhp has a lot of weight to carry.. It would be great if the bike was lighter without changing the big bike feel.. And just a slight bit more power.. It is not about top speed but in gear acceleration from 55 mph to 65 mph when passing lorries traveling at 56 mph on the highway in safe manner on those shorter highway stretches... It needs at least 10% more max torque and horsepower so numbers like 23 bhp and 30Nm could be achieved with the same engine and with less weight, say 171kg wet weight..

I found my top speed is largely limited by the wind direction and severity of grade. Here in Kansas driving into consistent 30 plus mile an hour winds it was hard to maintain 55 at times. With the tail wind I could touch 80 on the interstate though so it'll all depend. The key I've found is just don't be in a hurry to get any place. Ride it to enjoy the ride and not for the rate of advance.

It's a beautiful bike, beautifully made, and the UK national speed limit is fine for me. But the biggest gripe I have about this bike is how it manages to weigh a whopping 191 kilos which is huge for a small 20 hp motorcycle. It compromises so many things, from pushing the damn thing around parking places, to acceleration with the added screen, top box and luggage which will take it well over an eye watering 215 kilos! Royal Enfield really need to work on weight reduction on all their bikes which weigh more per hp than any other bike on the road. 191kg is shockingly heavy for a little 350cc.

75 mph at 5,750 rpm...that means if the bike were allowed to run in 5th gear all the way to its 6,500 rpm redline, then in theory it could hit just shy of 85 mph. I wish Royal Enfield would allow us to remove the speed governor on our bikes. With some sprocket swapping, maybe the bikes could run to 90 mph with a full tuck and some downhill magic.

I do not think that Enfield use any lighter alloys in frame or engine parts. ,, also bikes like the meteor or the classic 350 are not small bikes and will fit a large adult.. a limiter defeat seems almost necessary before you can do anything at all with this bike. air and exhaust may improve acceleration, but any gains in speed are lost in the limiter. ditto for any big bore kits or head work. such a shame because it is a beautiful bike, but its 100% pointless to own one here in Australia. and yes i've seen the 650, i honestly didn't like it. something seemed off between the super meteor and the meteor

I was looking at the specs of the Meteor vs Himalayan engines and it seems they both have the same stroke. Does that mean that the Himalayan is a bored out version of Meteor (or conversely the Meteor is a sleeved down version of the Himalayan)? If so would it be possible to drop a Himalayan engine into a Meteor bike? Where I live there are lots of mountains and an extra 4 ponies would come in very useful.

Honda build a similar 350cc air-cooled single with an even longer stroke and smaller bore diameter,, That engine has an output of 21 bhp at a low 5500 rpm and produces a healthy 30 Nm at 3000 rpm.. The J series engine has a slightly shorter stroke and larger bore diameter so produces its maximum at around 6100 rpm and 27 Nm at 4000 rpm... Why is the RE engine down on power and torque compared to the Honda engine..?? The Honda talks about them using an "offset cylinder position that reduces the sliding friction and asymmetrical connecting rod ensures minimum energy loss while combustion. It uses closed crankcase with a wall between crankcase and transmission reducing energy loss due to internal friction". The Honda engine is extremely frugal... I guess the RE engine has more internal friction and transfer loss.. The 411cc single in the RE scram/himmalyan can get a 15% boost of power without sacrificing to much low end grunt with a TEC UK designed camshaft.. Maybe the Meteor could get a boost from 20.2 to around 23 bhp with a redesign of the camshaft.. The Honda engine in a lightweight bike with slightly shorter gear ratios (the CB350RS have a very tall gearing),, could be a seller in Europe as a great town and country lane bike.. But unfortunately Honda does not supply bikes with this engine in Europe.

Yes it's great for a put around town but most people want to be able to get on the highway and get to the next off ramp, with hiway speed being 70 to 75 its not a good bike for anything but congested areas of the city, almost like idia made it for India? the new enfield hunter 350 with the same engine and weighing 181kg has a top speed of 114 km/h. (or around 71 mph) according to royal enfield. A clear evidence that the RE 350cc bikes are speed limited. one guy in India reached 130km/h on the GPS on a Hunter 350 on a long stretch so maybe he unlocked this limiter.. But 130Km/h was probably with the wind in the back.. 20.2hp will never give you more than around 129km/h anyway..
