Royal Enfield Himalayan Review: As a huge fan of everything Royal Enfield I was very interested to learn when the company brought out a brand new dual-sport adventure bike back in late 2016. It's been a long time coming to the UK but the Himalayan is finally here and I was chuffed to have a ride on one - stay tuned to find out how I got on...
Thanks to The Motorbike Man in Watford for lending me the bike to review.

I was one of those who sold my Honda and bought a Himalayan on the back of Noraly's wonderful channel. I have to say that the compass is not just useful in the outback (I am in Oz) but also in town when the GPS lady says "head east on Main St". At least now I am not scratching my head wondering which way east is at night. :) Stay safe my fellow apes!

I rode this bike from Katmandu, Nepal for 10 days toward the upper Mustang region of the Himalayas. 400 miles of it off-road. Spectacular views and fantastic bike. When I got off of it, I was ready to give up my 2015 bmw f800 gsa. For the price point, features and rideability, it's a hard bike to beat. Look wise, it's a great looking bike in a utilitarian sort of way.. kind of the same way one looks at an Ural.. Once they iron out all the kicks.. be a nice bike for round the world trips and not be too preoccupied with it being stolen..lol. Thanks for nice review..

@@ratnadeep617 Yes, Jerry cans are one option, but you can also hang soft bags there, distributing the luggage weight more evenly. (I think nathanthepostman talks about mounting dry bags there in one of his reviews.) I, too, really love that utilitarian look. The one thing that bugs me is the "Royal Enfield" badge on the tank guards, which stand out so much compared to the subdued stylized "HIMALAYAN" that it is almost garish. I'd consider either blacking out the badges or removing them all together. It's not that I'd want to hide the brand, but I wouldn't mind any admirers having to look a little harder to discover what it is.

I have owned one of these now for about 18 months and done 5k miles on it. No issues at all. . A really great bike. I toured Spain, Italy, Switzerland and France on it last summer with full luggage and wife on pillion. Even loaded like that it would pull 70 on a motorway. It is probably the best bike I have ever ridden for shrugging off being loaded up. I love the handling and ease of use. He is right about the front brake. I think it looks good but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Things he did not mention that I really like are: proper fork gaiters protecting the stanchions, decent mudguarding, a centre stand and a brilliant tight turning circle. It also has a reasonable tool kit and a place to store the handbook under the seat. I really only have 2 niggles. I like the idea of a compass but it really doesn't work very well, to the point where you can't really trust it. It also has an ambient temperature display, which is really good in a bike that you might use in winter a lot, except that once it is running the display registers 3 or 4 degrees more than it really is. The handbook does say only look at it before firing up from cold! Fix those 2 things and improve the front brake RE and you have a perfect bike in my eyes.

Yes l agree with you, I'm 6ft 1 in and my biggest problem was the ergonomics causing my backside go numb after 1 hour in the saddle and my arms to ache, but bar risers should see to that and and l reupholstered the seat myself putting height and width to the seating area, there are quality issues too (rusty bolts, flimsy switch gear ) but the engine is a solid piece of engineering. Good luggage mounting points and for the money great value R/E just need to pay attention to details and fastners .

The closest competitor in the US would probably be the Yamaha XT 250 like my wife has. It is about the same seat height and power, but it weighs 100 lbs less. It costs about $800 more new, but dealers and parts are easier to find. We don't have enough simple bikes anymore. So good for the Indians making something functional that isn't designed for race tracks and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I am re-visiting this Review two years later. I can't find my comment (if I in fact made one) but suspect that I thought it would rust quickly, and be as reliable as a 1960 Land Rover. I didn't rate it at all, and thought that ItchyBootys would junk it after a month or two. But no, its now March 2020 and I have followed Noraly on her amazing Channel since 2018. Sure, 2 x snapped clutch cables, inevitable puncture of the tubed tyres and suspension issues, but for me, absolutely expected. For goodness sakes, at GBP4k it was half the price of anything similar. Would this be the machine you chose on which to ride around the world - not a chance. But now I eat humble pie in huge chunks. ItchyBoots currently in Bolvia, is incredible. The Himalyan trundles on over appalling tracks, flood water, soft sand and sharp rocks. Credit to Noraly, but credit also to the machine. I was so wrong. I read that Noraly has through her Channel, increased global sales of the Himalyan by 125%. Well done to her, compliments to Royal Enfield for having faith in their machine. About 500% more than I did! I still don't want one, but gotta say how impressed and amazed that her bike 'Dhanno' is still going strong.

The style is a product of it's function. It isn't added on artifice. That makes it beautiful. People are using these bikes around the world on real adventures. That makes it a truly useful adventure bike , not some overweight, overly complex, overpriced pig. If it's dropped, a mere mortal can easily pick it up. It's simple to service. Glitz is replaced with quality suspension and longstroke lowdown chugging traction. For the purpose for which it was designed, it's a brilliant effort.

I really like the bike I rode this actual one in Watford , however when you consider the value yes £4200 is relatively cheap for a good little bike but we should remember when comparing it to equivalent bikes in the similar performance that this doesn't have a radiator , hoses, thermostat, fan and in some cases another cylinder with valve gear . So perhaps it's not such good value as you first think. It does however have a lot of character with all the noise and feel of a "proper" motorcycle . I love it's simplicity.

For me, it’s never been about the horses or the speed and I love the idea of this bike for all sorts of reasons not least of which is to stick one right in the eye of manufacturers who persistently ignore real world demand for mid sized adventure bikes at a decent price that pretty much anyone can afford. I have been watching itchy boots adventure videos on her RE Bike, and it seems to handle everything thrown at it. It makes you think about how a 4K bike can deliver the same as a 18k GSA. I remember watching long way round when the camera guy broke his GS and had to ride a little red bike and he loved it. This bike has tremendous potential, I think you could really make a good series out of one, just a thought. All the best 👍.

The Himalayan 's looks are fine. Form follows function. I actually like it and would buy one in a blink. Too many people seem hung up on the appearance, but to them I would say, look at the Willys Jeep or the original VW Beetle. Not classic beauty, but beauty in what it is intended to do.

I grew up riding late 60s and early 70s motorcycles, usually enduros that we're barely street legal, and old cafe racers like my 75 Norton and my Kawasaki H1. Compared to those smoking, leaking, vibrating old clunkers every single modern bike, including bargain bikes like the Enfields are like Cadillacs to me. I'd say that for the money it would be hard to beat any of these REs.

It does indeed look like a great "go anywhere" bike and it could be easy to maintain yourself in the middle of nowhere... Unfortunately the manufacturer is amazingly reluctant to give all service information to customers e.g. the valve clearances, how to reset the service reminder indicator, etc. If I have to take the bike back to my local Royal Enfield dealer every 3000 miles it could prove to be an expensive machine to keep on the road - they charge £160+ for a basic service (oil, filter, tension chain, pump up tyres), more if it's a full service :-/

Andy I wouldn't call it ugly - it's a bike for a purpose - to bring you anytime, anywhere no matter what. I own one and did some kilometers with it. It never let me down - even when it was overrun by a minivan it started up and I managed to get on it to the workshop (even they had to admit what a durable little bike the Hima is). I get loads of nice comments (sometimes hilarious when this one elderly guy noted that I did a good job on the restoration but he would never have put such a modern ODO on it as it ruins the look, but that is obviously what young guys like me do these days :-)) and the Hima is always a good starting point for chats. Yes, it's not high tech and yes everything beyond 100 KM/H is no fun at all and yes, the front break could use more bite etc - but then it would be something else - thanks for another great review. Stay safe

Great review, been reading up about these for the last month or so, took one out for a test ride today and loved it, ended up buying one. Do like the functional looks, front pannier racks are an interesting addition, there's aftermarket bags and fuel cans that can be attached, keeps weight forward as well. My current bike is a Guzzi Stelvio 1200, love it and it's great on long distance fast roads but not so good around the back lanes travelling slower which is where this bike would be most useful with a bit off off road use chucked in for good measure if you so desire. The Guzzi is a big heavy lump of a thing and very high and a bit precarious if you put your foot down on loose gravel, this little beasty just ticks all the boxes for a fun easy to use machine. Lot's of road tests comment on the front brake being weak, I found the same initially, the rear brake however seems quite sharp, if front and back brakes are used together it works really well, think this is designed with off road use in mind, my Guzzi Stelvio has twin four pot Brembo Calipers, stops on a sixpence but I guess that's the last thing you would want on a dirt track otherwise you are going to end up on your arse!

Nice review indeed. One thing I think you may not have noticed in your jaunt was the rear brake capability. I find that it is really useful and use it more than the fronts, which isn't typical on most motorcycles. I had a close call the first day I rode it and was about 50 ft from a traffic light and it turned red really quickly. I got on both brakes and downshifted and made it from 45 to 0 easily in that distance. Nearly dropped something in my shorts, but it was my fault, knowing that light changes quickly. I've put a bit over 1000 miles on it in 2 months and agree with most everything else you stated except the looks. I think it looks pretty sweet and get comments on it everywhere I go. I bought the black as I wasn't a fan of the white and also have the panniers. I can fit my regular bag, rain gear, cold drink and 3 bags of groceries in them and it really adds to my enjoyment not to have to use a backpack. Off road it really shines and also on gravel roads. The only think the tires aren't great for is sand. I had no issue with gravel, grass, weeds, crushed asphalt, etc. Sand makes it get a little squirrely. With the panniers and a 6' tall 280 pound dude on it, I average about 68 mpg which I'm quite happy with. If you choose to get one, just don't expect rocket starts, although they are better than most cars and trucks. I've done really well with it in town commuting also.

Hey, any chance you'll be doing a longer term review on this? I'm looking at adding heated grips, bark busters and a set of Rotopax 2gal tanks to the front frame. With those on, it'll basically double my mileage capability or I can do a gas and a water and have some potable water for exploratory drives. I'm hoping to get up into our more wild spots with the thing next year. 8) It's always interesting to hear the differences between the UK stuff and the US.

I bought a GT Continental 650 in Ice Queen White about six weeks ago and I absolutely love it (got rid of the 'Mickey Mouse' mirrors and put some bar end ones on the bike ;-) ). It's my first motorcycle and I didn't want to spend too much or buy too powerful a bike from the start, but I'm loving it to bits. Bought it for the occasional weekend ride, but in reality, riding this motorcycle has made me fall in love with biking so I just went ahead and ordered myself a Himalayan for commuting ; which means I'll only be taking the car in extremely bad weather conditions from now on. Have already taken my GT to work a couple of times and I find, as one is more concentrated and focused on a bike in traffic, you tend to arrive at work with a different state of mind, and the whole ride is less stressful than just driving the car to work. Overall, highly recommended ;-)

Great review very enjoyable to watch. Great Britain has more motorcycle history and heritage than any other country, Italy excepted also? Enfield are producing some affordable, light and easy to ride motorcycles which to my mind is a good thing for all! Looking back Great Britain has produced designs which have stood the test of time. With fourth coming speed laws, i think smaller less powerful machines, may rule?
