After spending a fantastic day motorcycling with @Royal Enfield North America in Milwaukee, WI (Thanks guys!), I'm excited to share my experience, thoughts and opinions on the Royal Enfield Himalayan Scram 411 available soon in the U.S. As always, you'll get the BIG picture with ride footage, music, some extra discussions and interviews, AND some basic ride vlogging. I love feedback. Let me know your thoughts on the video production or the Scram 411. Got a question? Fire away. As always, I'll reply to everyone I possibly can.
Also a big thanks to a new gear sponsor, Furygan.

Thank you Justin! Outstanding reviews of both the Himalayan and the Scram. With sales doubling in calendar year 2022, ( North America) it is quite apparent Royal Enfield has become a dominant contender in the North American on/off road motorcycle market. RE has listened to their riding enthusiasts and every year, update to accommodate the riding need. Very uplifting to see the admiration in the faces of a Royal Enfield motorcycle owner! Great Work!

Interested to see you riding in such heavy rain. I rode a Scram and loved it so much I now have one. Having been caught in bad wet weather twice now, and not inexperienced with 40 years of bikes, I'm incredibly impressed at how it copes. It's a long time since I felt so comfortable on wet roads - so oblivious of them, especially on a bike with standard tyres. I borrowed a Himalayan whilst the Scram was in for service and interestingly, your comments on brakes were perhaps the opposite for me. Happy on either, the Himalayan had the edge and I didn't know why there would be a difference. Maybe the unlinked/linked brakes was the key. I've now ridden a good few miles on three 411s. These machines need to be taken as serious motorcycles, not underpowered, old fashioned air cooled machines s some dismiss them. After a life of mainly big bikes, I've forgotten the soul of motorcycling that these provide.

Love your feedback, and glad you're liking the Scram. Regarding my brakes comment, keep in mind that my Himalayan is a 2018 model. I'm sure the newer Himalayans would also feel better to me. I agree, the Scram is serious and solid. Can you spend more money and go bigger and more powerful? Yes. But these bikes afford owners plenty of fun and smiles and good times on a smaller budget. You can buy one of these and still afford good riding gear and safety gear, panniers and a tent to go camping, etc. And they do the speed limit and overtake cars. It's plenty of bike for a good time.

@@KARMAkazeMoto I have to admit I also bought a 650 Interceptor as well (and having ridden the new Classic 350 would happily have one of those as well if I could afford it!) Adorable as the Interceptor is - and I do love it - and perhaps better for longer trips, at the moment my immediate preference is to take the Scram. In some respects, I think any increase in power may spoil the magic.

Great to see you back on Justin. I personally am going to wait and see where the "leaked" 450 leads to. Supposedly 40+ hp would carry my fat arse a bit better. Im heading quickly to 62 and my next bike will probably see my riding days out so i'm open to something like the Scram as i'm surrounded by dirt roads here.

Fun video! Love the behind the scenes with designers. the scrambler feels peppier because the engine mapping is improved. The 2023 Himalayan's now have the same engine mapping eliminating the need for that fast idle lever. How unlucky can you be it's raining during your press ride

I love this bike there's one thing I've noticed none of the reviews mentioned the lack of a center stand😳 you're right about the power delivery timing has been altered on the 400 single for 2022. Not mentioning the tyres with the rain and road conditions probably says it all nice bike good video 😉

Nice to hear from you again; it's been a while. About the front braking, I would guess it feels stronger because the smaller front wheel has less mechanical advantage, i.e. the shorter distance between the tyre and the brake pads (as compared to a 21 inch wheel) means the brakes have less torque to overcome. It's a similar effect to having a 2 inch wider disk on the 21 inch wheel of the Himalayan.

Yes agreed on the wheel size and braking. Now that I have ridden it for a week, it is what it is. I like it for exactly the bike it is. I’m 59yrs old and not needing to go 150mph. This bike cruises at 65-70 with my wife and I on it. It is agile and really fun in town. Fun agile Lane Splitting in California. At the same time the foot hills and Sierras are 15 min from my house. The Scram is a blast to head down any fire road, do some jumps and berms. It feels better than my Honda XL350R

Hey, haven't seen you in a while. Nice video. I love the way RE have been using vloggers to launch their bikes. They are really getting the word out through ppl that are good at describing what they see. Whatched quite a few worldwide now. Glad you got to go, and enjoyed the show. Really like the Scram. It reminds me of the bikes I started out on in the 70s. Even size similarities to my 500 Triumph Speed Twin in size and simplicity.

Great video, as always! If I was in a poaition to have multiple motorcycles, this would be a compelling option as a fun run-about. I've been keeping my eye on RE to see if they do a scrambler based off their Int 650. Everybody was talking qbout how wet it's been in Alaska, but I lucked out for moat of the days my wife and I were there last week. Had nice weather in Fairbanks, up to the Artic Circle Sign, down to Denali, and most of the time in Anchorage. It rained our final day, but that's it. We were very fortunate and timed the trip very well. Mikwaukee is a cool town. Interesting that RE did this press event in H-D's back yard. I went through the Juneau Ave. engine and transmission plant many years ago. It was a cool tour. I did pop in to House or Harley in Anchorage since it was right across the street from where I stayed and they had some cool old bikes in there and nice folks, too.

Boy di you ever luck out catching the good weather! So happy for you! The rain came again, and now all the fall colors and leaves are coming down, overcast sky. Got a ride in today, but winter is coming. Yeah, I liked Milwaukee. RE has their North America headquarters there, so it makes sense for that. Not sure why they chose Milwaukee for the NA headquarters though. Seems like a city with a longer riding season could have been more conducive to events. Funny I've never once been inside House of Harley, only the rental shop at the end of their parking lot. Glad you had a good trip! Cheers!

That's awesome! Love the RV combination. So how's it going to far? Don't forget to keep a maintenance charger on the lithium battery. Install once of the SAE plugs on the battery so you can easily connect the charger without taking the seat off. My Himalayan came from the dealer with one. Very useful. I still have my lithium battery from the video a few years ago. Still working. I can let it sit for around 2-3 weeks, but any longer you need that charger. The ATZ-10 can probably set a bit longer, but the ATZ-7 is holding up.

@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto Жыл бұрын
Hi John! I've concluded is that there is an actual difference, particularly between my early model 2018 Himalayan and the new Scram. You'll notice that the new Himalayans and the Scram have that catalytic converter section of the exhaust. What I believe is going on is that they've improved the fueling for better performance, but they're able to continue to meet emissions by burning off any excess emissions with the catalytic converter. I think that was a pretty good move on their park; although, I don't particularly like the looks of that exhaust. It reminds me of that fatter segment of an earthworm.🪱 Anyway, I got home and hopped on the Himalayan and it was extremely obvious that my bike felt heavier, just a little sluggish.

They did give them to us (buttering us up? 🤔😀), and I don't think they are available to purchase anywhere yet. I believe it was a limited run for special events. I hope they do add them to the Royal Enfield accessories area on the RE site. Since you just found the channel, here's a little backstory. Although I had the channel for a few years prior, in 2018 I preordered a Himalayan, picked it in in Seattle, WA, and proceeded to ride it home to Alaska. There was no RE dealer in AK at the time. So as one of the very first Himalayan owners in the US to share a big adventure, people where learning if Himalayan's engine could handle our higher speed limits, or any riding abuse for that matter, despite the the small price tag. I've only produced a handful of videos, but I've experienced overwhelmingly positive feedback from all. I hope you also see something you like and can tolerate my use of music to set the mood. Music also replaces terrible wind noise in most cases. Cheers! 🍻🙂

@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephen! Yup, I think I'd recommend to anybody that if you don't really expect to do a big adventure ride with some off-roading or any need to carry the side boxes, go for the Scram! If most of your riding is going to be on the street or just getting around, to and from work, weekend short rides, rides with some friends, the Scram 411 is much more suited for that. Even in my own garage, on a daily basis I'm more apt to jump on my Suzuki Bandit to get around town. I really only got in Himalayan to do longer trips where I need to carry some gear whether that be camping gear or maybe some photography related equipment. Or both. So if I had a Scram in the garage, as much as I love my Suzuki Bandit, I think I'd be hopping on that thing a lot more often and start treating my 97 Bandit like a museum piece. Which is a compliment to the Bandit.

I almost forgot to respond about Noraly. I've spoken to her about it in the past, and she has my information in case she runs into any trouble, but my understanding is she's not interested in purposefully linking up with anybody. She just wants to do her own thing and whatever happens is completely natural and unplanned. I respect that. I've had so many people ask me if I was going to link up with her that I lost track of the count. I think a lot of her viewers and my own would love to see us connect, and I think it would make for some interesting viewing, but I wouldn't hold my breath about it.

Nice. Can you tell Darleen that I don't like the matching colour rim tape on the Scrams (though I think there a couple of colours that don't have it). Maybe you can take it off. Lol, anyway I'll be 60 in December and I still like the look of the Himi. Might be an age thing. In the market for a new bike. I think the RE people know you KZfaqrs are the ones selling their bikes. Lord knows I think I have watched all them. They have tinkered with the fuelling on the Scram to make it better and all new Himalayans will get the same from the factory. Wonder if dealers can flash the ECU on previous ones.

Ha! I'll let her know! Yeah, I'm pretty sure you could peel that off with a heat gun. Flashing the older bikes would be nice! Although, I don't have that catalytic converter, so I'm guessing without that they want to keep it running more lean and clean.

@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto Жыл бұрын
Okay then, I hear ya. Makes sense. Thanks for asking. Regarding the plastic covers on the sides of the tank, I do wish they could serve a bit more of a purpose like little storage boxes or something, somewhere to put your little garage door opener, I don't know, but I don't mind the look of them. I mean, so many bikes out there have a bunch of ridiculous plastic that just hides the engine and some junky looking radiator hoses, these small covers on the Himalayan cargo rack mount points are totally fine by me. It gives the bike a little something unique, all its own. It would be interesting if an aftermarket company would ever do something with those to make them useful. And then the rest of the bike with the shorter but wider front tire, front fender, no rear cargo rack, and even the seat, I really like from a street riding point of view. I guess I'm not really comparing the Himalayan to the Scram with regard to looks, because with the Himalayan it looks the part for adventure riding, caring a bunch of gear, protecting the tank from rocks or whatnot when the bike gets dumped, and the Scram 411 has a look that says, "I'm ready for the street and your daily rides." So I like them equally, each for its own purpose. I have to say, I'm a fan of not having a big windscreen up in the air, but the windscreen is a necessity especially when you know you'll be out in adverse conditions.

🤣 Cracked me up! Let's not forget, putting aside from my whole off-roading segment in the video (wish I had more footage) the Scram 411 is a more street oriented version of the Himalayan with much better road handling characteristics. If this version of the Himalayan has a sweet spot, it's curves and city streets. Off-roading capability with the suspension travel is just a bonus for weekend camping trips with your pals.

Question, What are those things sticking out in front of the gas tank?
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto Жыл бұрын
Radar and lidar! ⚡ Just kidding! It's just a bit of bodywork. On the Himalayan there is the front cargo rack/tank guard that mounts there. With the rack removed, yet using the same base frame as the Himalayan, the bodywork hides the mount point. Think of it as if it were any normal plastic bodywork that any bike might have... only tiny. All bodywork is either protecting or hiding something. In this case perhaps a little of both.

I have another Q!... Did you ever consider the KAW KLR 650? 6.1 Gal gas tank especially in Alaska!, 40 hp, 40 lbs torque, 95mph top speed, A way heavier following, Tons of after mkt parts..ECT?. you can also lower it too!..
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto Жыл бұрын
Yes, I did consider that. The two drawbacks were that 1, it is a fairly tall bike for me even after a little lowering, and 2, I was able to get a new Himalayan for less than the cost of a new KLR. I could have picked up a used KLR, but then I'd be stuck with a bike that I wasn't certain how well it had been cared for or maintained, and I don't like that idea when going on adventures alone. Another factor to be honest is that I just really like the looks of the Himalayan, and it was fun to buy and test something new that no one had much experience with yet. And again, I really like the looks, just your basic metal and utilitarian style. I'm not a big fan of a bunch of plastic. That said, I've been in conditions where I would have loved a little bit more weather protection!

Almost sounds like they skipped the primer or didn't spray at the right temp or something odd like that. Would love to know what the cause was.

@@KARMAkazeMoto yep there was no primer underneath or any surface prep. It's like I hadn't looked after it ..... then it cut out while mid corner and nearly threw me in the hedge so that was the end of our lives together. !!

Due to some unforeseen events, some life changes and a couple of emergencies, the progress on that series was interrupted. I will have it done though sometime soon. Springtime is here and I'm getting back focused on some motorcycle projects and videos. I'm so sorry to let you down and make everybody wait forever. Sometimes life just gets in the way.

Can you use the accessories from the Himalayan on the scram to make it an ADV bike?

The engine guards like the ones from GIVI in my previous video will work perfect. The rear pannier/side racks apparently require a different rear fender. They actually sell the rear racks and fender as a kit together. So it can be done, but the Scram needs the fender kit. 😄 To be fair, there was a lot of others having a good time and rowdy riding going on. She just happened to be closest to my camera view. Plus that red helmet really stands out. You know, sometimes you just need to stand up and feel like you're flying, get that elevated view, stretch your legs!
