So that's how that darn thing is used. Seriously, these basic bits of maintenance are always overlooked. Thanks again Mr Fillingham.

I totally agree, bur I was put off, a long time ago, by one bike manual stated that the cable lining would swell and jam. It never did!

Picked up a 2000 SV650 for $1200 a year ago, been working through start and run issues, a little restyling, and thanks to you, I now know the correct way to use the cable luber, Thanks. Spring thaw in Vermont is April 15th on average, meanwhile I enjoy listening to the English language used nicely -- as if someone still reads books.

I use a balloon and a strong elastic band. Put the oil in the balloon with a small funnel, put the balloon over the bottom end of the cable, seal it with the elastic band and squeeze. When the oil comes out at the top of the cable, stop.

There's an old trick that works with a lot of bikes. Instead of completely unscrewing the adjuster at the lever end, wind it all the way in to loosen the cable, making sure the slot in the adjuster lines up with the slot on the lever. Then squeeze the clutch lever and hold it. Then, while pulling outwards on the cable sheath just outside of the adjuster, slowly release the clutch lever. the sheath will slide out of the adjuster. Then thread the cable out through the slots in the lever and adjuster. To reassemble, run the cable into the slots, then rest the sheath on the large diameter portion of the adjuster. Squeeze the clutch lever, then release while pulling outwards on the sheath. Line everything up and it's done.

Yeah that is fine on a lot of bikes Arthur, especially if the cable has stretched a little, but the cable was just too tight on my interceptor.

Thanks for the reminder Stu. The cables are a very often neglected service item. I can't ride for a few months yet because of my injuries, but I can manage that task with my one good hand! In my youth I used to form my own oiler out of plasticine, but the clamp is definitely the way to go!

Mr Flyer, I rode for MORE than 50 years. I don't KNOW how many bikes I've had. "RED RENNA" & "Captain Rambunctious," are familiar with my texts. I absolutely LOVE, British Vertical Twins. I've had 3 Triumphs. I HAD, a Norton Commando 'S.' (The one with HIGH Pipes & a RING, around the headlight.) I had a couple BSAs. My MOST recent Triumph, was a 2001 HINCKLEY Bonneville. I CRASHED My HD Dyna StreetBob, a little more than 2yrs ago. I broke my ARM, MY HIP & a FEW RIBS. I HAVE Survived 6 Motorcycle Accidents. M/Cs are IN MY SOUL. I WANT ANOTHER Bonneville. Great video, thanks for posting this. However, I would just point out that as you say cables are often lined with a low friction material. Injecting lubricant into a lined cable may cause the liner to swell and grip the inner cable which will eventually cause seizure. I have seen this on a few occasions over 50 years working in the motor industry.

perfectly safe if you use an o ring safe chain lube or white calcium based grease, its the solvents used in some products that cause the problem not the actual lube! Although most of the solvents that caused these problems are now banned on health and safety grounds.

Still prefer the funnel and 20/50 engine oil. Put the handlebar end of the cable about one inch into the narrow end of the funnel,tape it to make a seal,attach it to the bars,wide end up,and pour some oil into the funnel,leave overnight. Long lasting effect and pretty cheap. It's only reason a biker should be buying 20/50 oil in a "Discount Store".

Yeah the plastic insert is basically just a dodge so the manufacturer doesn't have to lube them and so cut costs, it doesn't last very long.

Hi Stuart, I found the calcium grease at Toolstation Product code: 39217 £4.49. I like the idea of lubing cables with something a bit more effective, I have always used a small amount of silicon oil but it is very thin. Is this a product you have used for a while and know that, in say 6 months, it doesn't gum up. Cheers steve

Seem to remember that teflon-lined cables don't need lubrication, and the oil can actually cause them to swell and bind. Or is that a myth?
@ianmorgan3732

Yes. I remember lubricating my cluch cable on my cx 500 years ago. The more oil i put in the stiffer it got!!
@stuartfillingham
@stuartfillingham 5 жыл бұрын
no its not a myth Mark, but it is out of date info, it wasn't the Teflon that reacted it was some of the cheaper alternatives, used on lower end cables, as I said in the video this lining doesnt last long, as long as you use a lube using a plastics safe solvent (which is most of them now) you wont have a problem. The world is constantly changing!
