In this video we compare and contrast the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 against the Continental GT motorcycles. We had these bikes on loan from Royal Enfield for just over a month so had enough time to get used to them and produce a good honest review.

I've had my interceptor for 2 years now and absolutely love it, the only problem I have is the amount of interest the bike gets people just love them even none rider's and really like to talk about it so if you're in a hurry it's probably not the bike for you.

I'm 62 and i was worried about how my wrist would hold up with the "lean forward " position of the GT. I'm a bowler and i use a "wrist rocket" which has curved metal supports in it to support the wrist and help hook the ball. I figured " what the hell" and wore them for a long ride . Turns out they worked great .😎

I recently passed my test in my late 30s on a Yammaha MT-07. After passing I went straight out and put my deposit on an Interceptor. I ride it to work every day and nothing about it is disappointing. I really do love it. For my first bike everything about it is simple and straightforward. It looks like a bike. It sounds like a bike. It has bags more character and soul than the yamaha. I've chucked a couple of oxford heritage panniers over the seat and it's perfect for everyday riding. I serviced it myself for the first 300 mile break in service because its so straightforward.

The important thing to remember about both these bikes is that the header pipes have a lot of restrictive sound deadening in them so if you want to make them go properly, don't just replace the cans, replace the lot. BS of Italy make a complete system at a reasonable price which looks fantastic and saves a ton of weight.

I have the Continental GT which I've owned for about a year. First off I changed the mufflers to SMW mufflers, these were supplied by RE. Chrome finish on these Indian made mufflers was excellent and the sound is great. I replaced the standard levers with short adjustable ones, fitted the air deletion kit, fitted the center stand and that was a lot of fun, booster plug, fly screen with the embellisher, new bar end mirrors with new bar ends, paddock stand bobbins, and LED blinkers, also have the single seat with hump. My bike being a 2020 model has the alloy rims which I prefer to the black ones. They kind of remind of Borrani alloy rims from the seventies. All the parts apart from the mufflers were purchased through Hitchcocks and service to Australia, even during the worst of the pandemic was excellent and everything fitted exactly like it said on the box. Overall I love my GT. It's not the quickest but it certainly gets the looks when you pull into a service station, even from the boys in blue.

Is fitting a centre stand on the Continental a ball ache? I've had mine a fortnight and like the idea of putting a centre stand on it but if it's going to be a faff then I can live without it.

Maybe when they have at least 35 plus years of experience as a motorcycle Rider their reviews will be better. I have 42 plus years of experience and I'm know when I see a good motorcycle review.

I was interested to hear the comparison to the A65 BSA… When I test rode the Interceptor over 3 years ago, it took me right back to the old ’64 A65 I had in my youth. It had the responsive feel, and taut handling of that pre-OIF Beezer, but without the crap brakes, temperamental kickstarting, and vibration (not to mention the Joe Lucas and Wipac 60's electrics). 3 years on, my RE 650 still enchants me… yes, the bike sold itself on that test ride… I took it to my brother's place in SW France for a month (pre-covid) where it was the perfect bike for those brilliant Languedoc roads. It was able to sit happily at the French 130kph autoroute limit for as long as required, with an engine flexible enough to get away with the wrong gear on a mountain hairpin, and a chassis that got me out of trouble when braking got left a 'bit late' when chasing my brother's ’06 Thruxton on roads he knows too damn well. Mines gloss black, with the 'natural' anodised alloy rims… I love the red and chrome option on the latest bikes, mimicking the last of the UK Interceptors, but not those black rims, which look out of place.

I love my INT650 Sunset Strip! I've had it a month, and already have S&S exhausts (awesome), super fine Renthal gold Ultalow bars, short levers, and bar end mirrors. A bug screen is on the way from Dart in UK, and I couldn't help but order a set of side panels that say "INTERCEPTOR" instead of "INT650". At 67, it's my favorite bike ever and my poor Suzukis are wondering what's going on.

As far as motorcycles I have owned suzuki 500 and 750 two strokes, and the wankel rotary 750, kawasaki 1000, 750 four cylinders, ducati 860, moto morini 500 camel, laverda 3cl 1000, cagiva 650, and currently have a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT 1000 and a 2013 Moto Guzzi Stone 750. Have owned several German bikes to include BMW and Zundaps. Grew up with British bikes--meaning Triumph and BSA. Have never been interested in Harley. The Moto Guzzis have been my favorite above all the rest. Quirky, reliable, tractor-like in that the Japanese "refinement" is not there--but if you love just being connected to machinery and sound--Moto Guzzi. However, the Royal Enfields are absolutely gorgeous machines with a beautiful sound. At 71 years of age, I am not sure I can convince my wife that I need just one more bike, but the RE's are VERY tempting.--mike battle

Also doing up a tank like the " magic's " only with red stripes instead of gold. Looks awesome. Its the only tank design that works for me, and i change the look in a 1/2 hour. 😎

I very much enjoyed your detailed evaluations of both models of the RE 650. I agree, the Interceptor is the better looking model. I bought an interceptor (blue) earlier this year (2022) and already have over 4K miles on it. Ride it every day about 25 miles on back roads out to my stables. When I was young and living on Guam in 1968, I had a 650 Triumph TR6 that transformed Guam from a hot, stinking, boring hellhole into a tropical paradise: I loved that bike. I bought the INT to remind me of my Triumph and it does in many ways and even more so than my late and lamented 500 Bullet. I am 76 and a very short guy (5'6") and my riding days may be numbered, but I want to ride my motorcycle (and my horse) as long as I can. I find the INT definitely top heavy (especially with a full tank) and if dropped, impossible for me to pick up by myself. I have the large crash bars, but even with them, the bike falls flat and there is no way to get your rear on the seat so you can use your leg muscles to right the bike. With a lot of practice (so important to practice) while thinking about what to do in unusual situations like emergency stops and uneven and slippery terrine, I haven't dropped the bike in some time now, so I am getting better. I greatly miss not having a kick starter and I wish somebody would make an after market one I could install myself. I wish the bike had a longer stroke and more low-end torque with fewer gears -- six gears makes it seem like I'm always shifting -- my Triumph had only four and that was enough for me. Finally, the design of the frame would preclude it, but I wish I could sit lower so that my feet could touch the ground with anything but my tip-toes. Again thanks for the informative and entertaining video.

Funny. If you really think about it, the continental should be called the interceptor and vice versa, as gt stands for " grand touring " which the int 650 is better suited for with it's bar setup and seating position, much more comfortable for those long rides. Even "classic 650" for the INT, as it does have the classic style they are known for. Great video 👍😎

I have the GT, done 3000 miles in 12 months, I found the bars a tad low when doing slow back lane rides & town work. Found some risers from Cooperb Motorcycles (their own product) repositions the clip ons from below to above the top yolk, Lifts the bars 2 1/4" higher, no need for any longer cables etc. £46 delivered, took around 50 minutes to fit, makes the world of difference, I got the GT as the pegs on the Interceptor were too far forward & low for me. and I prefer the style of the GT.. Also fitted Zard silencers & DNA air filter with snorkel removed, It's the most fun bike I've had in 41 years of riding, I traded a CB1000R neo sport cafe for my GT Continental, CB was super fast - but no character or soul

I'm a little older than Alex's dad but I still prefer the look and riding position of the 650cc GT over the Interceptor. Problems; saddle height too high for me (shorter rear shocks and dropping the triple clamp 35mm fixed that), also too heavy (I've taken about 23kg out of mine but although that sounds a lot it's little more than a 10% weight reduction, next step will be an aluminium tank if I can find a supplier). The other problem I've had is the off-white grease around the relay connections (it's a common fault at least on the earlier bikes, just wipe it off, replace the relays too if you want to be super sure, the cost would be minimal). This is the first bike I've ever owned with ABS, works great (in fact I find I hardly use the rear brake now that the likelihood of locking the front wheel is eliminated). 2 great bikes, 2 great reviews. Thanks.
@jackbauer1893
@jackbauer1893 Жыл бұрын
How can you get off 23kg? I think 12kg can be done by removing useless parts like the extended mudguards, the center stand and hand rail, by replacing the cans and the batterie, and the rear shocks. All of that are 12, max 15kg if you use a 2-1 exhaust. But that's the absolute maximum. 23 kg? No way...

The Mark 2 Interceptor looks absolutely phenomenal. I've seen some of my friends going to the adventurous terrains of Ladakh and they seem to have enjoyed this machine very much. The best thing is, you can ride it all day and it won't breakdown. We Indians know this better because all these Royal Enfields have been tried and tested on the tough roads of India and there's absolutely nothing that can go wrong with them. Plus, the services are pretty affordable. I would personally go with the Big bore 865cc setup after the warranty's over.

In India, Enfields are infamous for being the most unreliable bikes and high maintenance bikes to exist. It's just only now with development of GT650 twins that they have had complete overhaul of their production line. Only the newer J-platform and 650 twins have world class quality, before that it was VERY bad.

Thanks guys for such a great review. Is so refreshing to see one from people who actually ride and have experience. Nice to have the comparisons between the classic and the new. .uk favourite bike ever for all round use was a T140 with a US tank. I trust your comparison with the A65 and think the interceptor might be just what I'm looking for. One thing that was putting me off was the weight compared to a Bonnie and also the fuel injection, i hate the sudden way it kicks in on my Ducati (now solved). Although the Ducati is great, i suspect the interceptor might be more forgiving and easy to ride longer distances. And i love that chrome look! Cheers

My younger brother has the Interceptor, he is thoroughly enjoying it, there is very little he wants to change about it, the low rpm flat spot is annoying him but easy to fix. I think he mentioned fork springs too. A factor in the choice was that it has adjustable tappets and not shims, the bike will not be going to shops for maintenance so he wanted something easy to look after. Apparently everywhere he goes people want to talk about it. He also saved a few grand by buying it "used" with some nice accessories and just 800 miles on it...crazy that many people buy bikes and never use them. A lot of bargains out there if you look hard..

I reckon change the shocks first and good tyres . Dunno whether it's worth doing brakes but anything for reliability would be good. I'd want to change the bike to go overland across central Asia. It certainly is simple to work on, minimalist, well designed. Bravo Enfield. Exhaust is heavy.

Thanks for your ecellent review. I am a Brit living in Thailand. Presently I ride a Suzuki 650 Vstrom, but I'm 75 & find it a bit of a maul in Traffic, due to the height & weight, especially with my Givi boxs on. I've always loved Classic bikes & up until the 90's iv'e had BSA golden Flashes & A65 Lightning. Now I need to slow down a bit & I think the Interceptor would be just the bike. The weight difference isn't much RE is lighter, but it's much lower, so I will be able to get my feet flat on the ground. At the end of the year begining of next, I hope to go on a 3 week tour, health permitting starting in Buriram Thailand, where I live, going to Cambodia, Veitnam, Laos, & back to Thailand. I hope I'm making the right choice. I have watched a lot of reveiws & asked on different forums, & I don't think I've had any negative feed back, only good. Thanks. Ride safe everyone

A TEC 2-1 is 13 kg lighter & 2-2 big bore which look better are 10kg lighter & a lithium battery is 3kg lighter than stock battery so 2-2 with battery is 13kg & things like rear grab rail is .5kg & center stand is 1.7kg & a TEC lighting LED kit will replace plastic one's & cast steel headlight bracket.Foot pegs removed cause it not really a pillion bike. If you going to change Cam while engine is open might as well put high compression pistons in lifting compression from 9:0,1 to 11:00 for not much more & definitely increase power & rev better.A 865 you loose smoothness of gearbox cause it needs to be upgraded.Paint the logos on engine casings.They do have skinny grips so grip puppies to beef them up.A S&S air filter & S&S Race Only slip on's or similar & it sounds great & with S&S slip on's give you 13% performance in the mid range.Big bore 2-2 headers,air filter, slip on's on & be round about 60bhp or 48-49rwhp & 63Nm & 2-1 will be 53rwhp & 71Nm.Rear cans weigh 10kg so replace them for 4kg one's.Yss fork upgrade.Spend 2-3k on bike & got a great bike & still 3k cheaper than T100 or W800 with all the mods.

Will need a heavy duty Rekluse clutch with any tangible performance increase, and say goodbye to 91RON fuel, as a hotter, higher compression engine will need more octane to prevent detonation and piston damage. Factor in a Power Commander and some dyno tuning…
@ruahinesrider
@ruahinesrider 2 жыл бұрын
@@HaggisPower Who uses shite 91unleaded when you can use 95 or 96 or 98 which is what I use in any bike unless there's no 98 then 95. 91 unleaded is only used when at country gas station & that's all that's available but yeah you right in those cases you'd have to carry two 2.5Liter fuel containers with 98 for 865 as a stock bike can run on the cheap stuff 91 if nothing else available.You'd have to be tight to run any stock bike on 91unleaded.

@@HaggisPower😁😂🤣 I have a clue,I know the stock bikes are designed to run on 91 or even E5, E10 if your country sells it mine doesn't.Higher octane fuels give better performance & nearly every biker uses higher octane unless the gas station only has 91 or they tight.Gas is gas & it mixes in with each other but higher octane runs richer,cooler than 91 & if you got headers,air filter,slip on's,2-1 bike will run leaner so higher octane is better.

Leave the clutch alone when changing up. Push up a very little on the gear lever, just relax your hold on the accelerator a tiny bit and it will slot up just as quick as a modern DSG gearbox on for example a VW. It just slots from one gear to the next as if both gears are simultaneously engaged and you are just swapping one for the next one. It is quite pleasing to accelerate away with no hesitation at all during the increase in speed.

Well said 😎 gotta love a well-syncronized trans. I learned that power shifting my 65 chevelle. Light pressure on the stick, and when she hits the" powerband" up in the revs it slides right out and into the next gear . Far cry from driving a ww2 Sherman tank, where you have to double clutch to match the revs . Cool when you do it right, CRUNCH when you don't 👍

You can get a a chrome tank on the GT, if that’s the thing you like. Personally I do not like clip-ons. Not even mild clip-ons. Don’t like rear-sets. If racing, ok fine. I don’t race anything. Otherwise it is not sensible or useful for regular riding to put up with the riding position which provides nothing on the street. As far as the mild performance, well, the old GOAT versions of what we now might think of as “super bikes” were 650s, no faster than these, and they thrilled. These new RE 650s in the here and now are fine and fun for mortals on the mean streets of the real world. The actual RE choice problem in the USA is driven by the (lack of) an adequate dealer/expertise/ parts network. It’s not a minor problem for service-intensive bikes. Even with DIY skills, a network matters. Moreover, *some* of the spots for sales they have chosen, it must be said, are not “first rank” for various reasons. I suggest RE might consider unusual sponsoring of relationships with some of the myriad private owner repair shops around the country and really commit to pushing access to parts and information for these independent shops on the repairs side of things. This is a fanfare for the common-man strategy. OR get it together and corporately sponsor many, many more first-rate, full-service flagship dealerships until there is a sustainable network in the USA. Something. Or it will never be a very valuable market for RE and that is very sad for us “trapped” in it. There is a dealer only 20 miles from me. But if I go anywhere other than stay and putter around here, well, for RE it’s crickets for hundreds of miles. Off message about choosing GT vs Interceptor, but the point is that “neither” is an unfortunately rational option if RE remains so unsupported. Sad situation for such good, and affordable real-world motorcycles IMO. I can, I mean this quite literally, buy 3 or 4 or these for the price of one raging excess aluminum boxed etc BMW or guilded HD or whatever. So many 20-30 y/o’s can get started on new REs, so many 18-25s can get sweet used ones, family guys can afford one, and so many of my oldster generation can get back to riding something other than 6 cylinder bikes with reverse on these as well. I choose the Interceptor between these two in any case.
