Speaking as an American I don't love the British Monarchy. So you can't speak for all Americans and I don't dislike them.

First time I visited London and the Queen mom had a ceremony, I was thrilled beyond measure.

It amazes me that there is constant discussion about the end of the Royal Family and that in your own country, the British. Wasn't it the RF that stood together in WW2 when Edward sympathized with the Nazis? Isn't it the existence of the Royal Family that is an indispensable industry, have you calculated what would happen to your country if you abolished the monarchy. The economic benefits of the Commonwealth? Don't 4 million tourists come to the UK to experience these traditions that have remained alive for centuries? Don't 2 billion people turn on the TV for royal events? I envy the British for their unique form of government. 🇩🇪

This Peter guy forgets about the money the royals bring to all the different organizations by putting a light on them. And by all the attention they bring to different businesses.

As an American there are moments that I truly appreciate your monarchy. The royals are elegant, sophisticated and charming. They are not celebrities who only become famous for perks. The Royals being born into the duty of having their lives being dedicated to excellence and every movement scrutinized is a high price. They are not given the luxury of being what they wish to be, or say what they wish to say. They always smile and are gracious with the intrusion of cameras and people watching for mistakes or dramatizing minor things in order to sell papers. They bring comfort when the country needs it and gossip when the country doesn't. I admire the Royals not because they rule but because of the sacrifice that they endure for the masses to be appeased.

I'm currently reading 'The English Constitution' by Walter Bagehot. Although written in 1867 he outlines very well why a constitutional monarchy works and what the role of the Monarchy is. It also highlights how the monarchy is really contributing to it's own abolishment by failing to live up to the role which is theirs.

What would be the equivalent of brexit for the royal family. Peter has a point about their wealth. They are loaded. And people do have to fawn over them. But as an Irishman I think they do represent the the cultural heart of GB. As for Irish presidents I wouldnt wish Higgins , McAllese or Robinson on anyone. Examine the motives of people who want to get rid of the monarchy. They really envy the Queen's lifestyle and want it for themselves. To cover their base thoughts they pretend that the system is "broken" and needs to be fixed. Their goal is that in the new system they get to be like the Queen and live large (without a care about duty). Look around the world and you will see many examples of this. Be careful what you wish for. I am black and not worried about not having a black king or queen of England as that country was inhabited originally by folks of a white hue. In time through intermarriages we may actually get a mixed-raced king/queen.

Then there is the income generated for businesses from Royal Warrants which is absolutely massive. Plus the support given indirectly to British retail and fashion. Kate purposefully wears outfits from British high street stores in addition to designer outlets - all of which sell out within a matter of hours afterwards. Each year the royal family carries out over 2,000 official engagements throughout the UK and worldwide. Engagements include working with Commonwealth and UK charities, attending state funerals, national festivities, hosting garden parties for individuals who have served their communities ie. paramedics, volunteers etc., hosting receptions for foreign visitors and Heads of State, and visiting and supporting our Armed Forces. Members of the royal family have started their own individual charities. Prince Philip started The Duke of Edinburgh Awards which helps youngsters with life skills to achieve their goals, Prince Charles started The Prince's Trust, which helps young people in the UK that are disadvantaged. Princess Anne started The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, which helps unpaid carers, giving them emotional support and information about benefit claims and disability aids.
