Yes it was. The Canadians had fewer resources available than other nations, so they got real creative in how they prosecuted their war efforts. Yeah the first time I heard this story I was a bit confused as to why they’d have anti-air guns on an oil rig to begin with, so I must’ve missed when The Fat Electrician literally stated early on the video that the oil rigs are no longer drawing any oil but are instead being used as military outposts.

They were mostly being used as operating bases that they operated their speedboats out of as scouting vessels for their blockade.

I didn’t know that only your ship fired on the platform! I was part of the Marine detachment that set the explosive charges. I picked up a few small “artifacts” while moving about the platform. One of them was a piece of shrapnel that was resting in the bottom of a trench that was carved out of the helipad by one of your shots. The 5” groove started shallow and grew deeper as it grazed over the surface, finally penetrating completely. Thanks to you I know which ship fired the chunk of metal I’ve been holding for 36 years!

The only time I got nervous during the operation was when we had an inbound F-4 and he got a little too close for comfort. Guns had dropped sync and couldn't pick him up, and he was in Sea Sparrow's blind spot (cut-outs), so they couldn't fire on him, and I didn't have his radar, yet. I believe he got within 20 NM, suddenly Sea Sparrow picked him up, Guns picked him up, and I picked up his radar. He bugged out because he knew he was going down. I think the other thing that bothered me about Earnest Will was steaming around in mined waters. Very nerve-wracking... It's interesting to get another perspective on what happened.

You are correct when saying no single presentation seems to get every detail right, but all the highlights are here. Of course you know we didn’t just “send a couple of Hueys” full of Marines to set charges. The Trenton did have a couple of UH-1Ns but our main ride was the CH-46. We were covered by AH-1T Cobras which added 20mm and TOW missile fire to the 5” gun damage. The Sassan GOSP was truly massive with multiple platforms connected by catwalks. There was visible damage almost everywhere, some of it obviously fresh, but I suspect some might have already been there. Perhaps from an Iraqi attack? At any rate, it was a battle station. Ammunition stores were cooking off from burning fires sending metal in random directions. I can see why the Sirri platform wasn’t raided! After each platform was “cleared” (using concussion grenades) the Marines of MAGTF 2-88 (B Co. 1/2) gathered intel items for analysis. We even took a ZU-23-2 and hoisted it under a CH-46 for transport back to the Trenton. The gun was almost completely intact except for a fresh shrapnel gouge in one of the barrels, courtesy the Merrill. The same choppers then turned around and began the process of transporting around 3000 pounds of explosives over to us. Due to some previous experience with explosives, I and another Corporal were ordered to stay back and assist setting up the charges. I had a rifleman and a grenadier from my fireteam as well. A SNCO from EOD was in charge of the setup plan. We used lots of C4 blocks, but also improvised 40 pound cratering charges to destroy other 23mm ZU emplacements and stacks of Iranian ammo. We even used Bangalore torpedos along the catwalks. All of this work took several hours for our small group! With everything set to go off together from a det cord, the Gunny lit the timed fuse and we got on the last CH-46 out. I saw Gunny looking at his watch on the flight back to the Trenton, sweating and praying I’m sure, that everything would work. I never saw the explosion, as it went up when we were still airborne.

I have to say, when he first mentioned the dive team discovering the mines were Iranian, I expected the divers to moe them into Iranian waters. I realize that's a dangerous proposition, but it would have been fun watching Iran discover their mines had made their way home.

​That's more than a dangerous proposition, that's an effectively impossible proposition. A mine isn't well-designed if it's something that's easy to disarm or move. Even if there wasn't a risk to the divers, and they could spend hours working on the mines, without using a nearby support ship since those mines are designed to detect ships and detonate, most naval mines are like 400-500 pounds, and the ones in use by Iran in this incident were a particular type where the mine is also tied to an anchor that weighed who knows how much. The mass of the mine means that even if it were neutrally buoyant and wouldn't need constant effort to keep from sinking, it would still be difficult to move. The mooring means though that it actually isn't neutrally buoyant, the explosive payload at the top is, but as a whole the mine sinks. The tether to the mine is typically a heavy chain, and a rope alone is hard enough to cut underwater, let alone a chain. @@ralphm6901

It’s a medic not a combat medic, there is no distinction between medics attached to combat units or hospitals it’s luck of the draw we all go through the same training. Not saying that’s a good thing, buts it’s the way it is now do to politics and has been for a few decades.

Understanding the history - Iran had a relatively moderate, educated populace going through reform of governance. You can imagine that the current day Iranian regime isn't ran by the best. The best emigrated when they could, the best got persecuted. And so what you get, is a bunch of Yes men - someone at the top proposes a solution, and everyone, no matter how bad the idea, no matter the consequences will tend to say "yes boss". Now we get into their goals: Well - if you don't have an external enemy, your people are liable to rally against authoritarians given time. You NEED a threat outside of you that is not existential, but constant enough to continue galvanizing the populace against the threat in a rallied way which allows a complete shut down of dissension against the regime to go without backlash. So why does Iran fund those organizations? Because it keeps a degree of instability around Iran - and that Instability creates the very foundational justification for literally everything else going on inside the country in one form or another.

The Navy still does tiger cruises, its just up to the CO and operational tempo of the ship in question. I personally had two done while aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (cvn-72). Often there just wont be enough rack space aboard ships for civies to use or you just wont have time to just leisurely travel.

You are incredibly lucky to have such an amazing memory of time with your father. I’d gladly give 20 years of my lifespan to have such a memory. For a couple reasons, one my father and I never got a chance to bond like that and two I’ve always wanted to be a jet pilot, tried to but couldn’t pass the military physical due to an inherited condition. You got that right! I signed on in 1966, went to boot camp in San Diego in early 1967, and had something like a "Intro to Damage Control" and "Fire Fighting." My rate was Electronics Tech Communications (ETN), but the Navy's approach was that you're going to be on a ship; you'd better know how to help keep it floating. For all of my 10 years on active duty, we covered some part of that training during every duty day on board ship. It didn't matter what job you really had.

I mean, in the late 90s the DC schooling in boot is basically learning how to talk over sound-powered phones...

Yeah, that ship had epic level (s++) damage control. Most ships (like every ship in the world, except the roberts), would be on the bottom of the ocean.

Taffy 3. That ship has an amazing name with an amazing history

Just as epic how they fixed it. Instead of scrapping the ship, they fabricated a completely new, engine room module. In the Navy yard, they cut out the wrecked engine room and grafted the new engine room into the existing remainder of the hull.

I went to college for two years then Parris Island and Marine Corps & finished 4 years active and my BS. I applied for OCS and went to Quantico to the naval officer because I wanted to be a lawyer. The military covered ALL OF THAT. For 3 years I went to school and busted my ass and I kept my GPA up at 4.0 just to make sure they paid my tuition. When I was going to law school I was in the reserves, & could have been pulled out if any time if NEEDED.. thankfully that didn't happen. I loved working with JAG. But I was raised around guys and worked around a lot of guys so they never offended me with anything they say. As long as they didn't hit on me, we were good.

You got a lot wrong there. The big Wisky flattened the artillery position only not a town and it wasn’t a British escort it was an American destroyer. But hey you got the “temper temper” and the battleship right.

@@NVArt001 Sorry to tell you, but those sources are very wrong. A number of channels and historians have covered that incident, and it was most definitely the Destroyer USS Buck that signaled "Temper Temper" to Wisky, and it was only the enemy position they fired on. Now, they OBLITERATED said position with absolute overkill, but they definitely did NOT fire on a town.
