Problem with German forces is that politically they don't have a lot of support from the German government. In Afghanistan, Norwegian special forces on several occations had to step in and take over missions, because politically Germany struggles with it's nazi past and it's politicians don't really want to get their soldiers into combat. Germany's soldiers are restrained that way. Very good soldiers, but held back by history.

The Germans never called the 20 Years in Afghanistan a "War", it was always just a "Peace- or Stabilization Mission" in the politicians' Mouths, which is why there were no Leopard Battle Tanks. With the war in Ukraine, the View and Respect of the Military by political Eyes is slowly changing.

I have watched another vid about an US-Marine reacting to KSK Hell Week. He said the most astonishing thing was, that everbody was kinda quiet. No shouting at the trainees, no motivational Drill Sergants standing by just the KSK Instructors walking aside the trainees and giving them bold instructions. Its a psychological and physiological challenge cause you never know when its over until its over. Also the german forces especially the special forces are held back by political idiocy cause of the fear of Germanys historical role since WW2...

Well the dislike of the KSK specifically had to do with the swuad leads who hoarded amunition with one planning to pretend to be a syrian refugee and commit terror attacks to start a european "race war". Historically they obviously are more conscious about their behaviour but there also has been a real problem of anti-democratic people joining special forces.

I was in the federal armed forces (german army), i saw active KSK soldiers. It is crazy how fit they are, In the middle of summer I saw someone running around with 25-30 kg of equipment for training, he was faster than me without luggage and equipment, I wasn't unathletic at the time. After the procedure, there are still 3 years of training, which continues with these training courses.

Not quite. That was always the way General Ammon talked to "his" people. From 2003 to 2005, he was commander of Panzergrenadierbrigade 30, where I had the honour of serving under his command. He was one of the most human superiors I have ever experienced. Even back then, he addressed everyone as "Du" in personal conversations. But he had a unique and natural authority that no one would ever have questioned. That was definitely the best time in my military career. All the best, General! 🫡

The old training in the KSK was basically a mix of what Germany learned from the SAS (with which they trained a lot in the beginning) and the advanced infantry training of the Bundeswehr the so called Jagdkampf (Defence in depth) and Einzelkämpferlehrgang (the old "German commando course) which was the requirement for Fallschirmjäger (Paratroopers), Gebirgsjäger (Mountaineers) Jäger (similar skill set as Rangers) and Panzergrenadier (Armoured Infantry units) units and added lessons from the Fernspäher (Long Range Recon) and Kampfschwimmer (German Commando Frogmen) units. All those types of experience went into the qualification and later KSK training course. That was 1996 and 90% of the first KSK soldiers came from above mentioned units. Meanwhile the Bundeswehr changed a lot of that and the KSK is a bit more specialized inside while the old units are now running under the name "EGB Forces (Specialized Army Forces with Expanded Capabilities)" The "Defence in Depth" and "German Commando Course I (and II)" are still necessary for NCO and officer ranks and most of the infantry units - and Air Force and Army pilots.

I myself am German and come from a family with a long tradition of military service going back to the Franco-Prussian War. My uncles used to tell me that when they did their mandatory military service, they would still on occasion be hit by superiors in basic or woken up by the loud bang of a metal trash can thrown into the barrack room before morning roll call. It has of course become much more humane and quiet since. Reforms of the past years have even, at least officially, banned the instructors from shouting at recruits and some may percieve this as the military softening up as not to scare away recruits and create a lack of soldiers in an entirely voluntary army without the reliably large amount of draftees every year. But how I believe this short documentary has splendidly shown, the sobriety and calmness of an instructors face with an expression that says "I've been there and done that" allthewhile fairly politely ordering the soldiers to execute feats bordering on cruelty as if it were a walk in the park can psychologically be equally effective and is, at least in my humble opinion, much closer to the German cultural identity. But of course I must agree with the 'old heads' in the sense that new soldiers must be familiarised with a certain degree of agression to properly prepare them for all eventualities of military life, which at last, remains the battlefield.

It's good to see that there are more families with such a tradition. I know this tradition of military services in the family, too. We could look back in our family history for about six generations (before this time we couldn't find any records or data), and in every Generation we has someody in duty. I had my 12 years too, and I got the luck to become an Drill Instructor most of the times, also during the time when the model of leading was "renewed". In my opinion it was not bad, because most Instructors already knew that there are times for being loud and times for being calm. It always depends on the situation and what we wanted to bring to the minds of our recruits or experienced comrads. I also can't remember that we had a feeling like a need for constant yelling at any time, like the US-Instructors I knew seemed to have.

@@hawkiebaby In the Bundeswehr. Although I must ad, not to cast a false picture, even back then (70s & 80s) this was a controvercial and seldom occurance an also want to emphasize the semantic difference between being hit (which could mean anything from a forceful shuve to a closed-hand punch) and being beat up, only the first of which was told to me through first hand accounts. Unfortunately, unlike the beautifully intricate and complex German language, the english language does not lend itsself to very well.
@liamwilson6102

@@GainsDorn I completely agree with your statements. I assume, judging from the last sentence that you are in fact a fellow German who used to be an Ausbilder for basic trainees. In any case, thank you for your service. It seems to me that many Germans with a similar backround to mine exist (purely because military service was mandatory for most of the time after 1871, which most Germans have either some imagination of, or even a personal relationship to) but do not want to or dare to identify with, let alone take up the occupational tradition existing within the family, because unlike in say the US or UK it is not deemed an honroable feat to have been a soldier either in the imperial German Army or the Wehrmacht. Whether the Bundesregierung today is right to condemn the Soldatentum of those eras or not is not really important to me, but it is interesting to think that the Bundeswehr as a whole struggles with a lack of tradition that could aid in finding and maintaining a certain leadership profile that could raise the attractiveness of our army in todays society, which I believe most sensible people would agree is important.

The "KSK" is also divided into forces... e.g. psychological service, command company 1-3, special reconnaissance. what you mean is the direct response team. - whose name is: Special Command Company. The Special Command Company is usually the first and last in the operational area. and the training there looks completely different, and they have some self-determining powers regarding operations that also affect state operations.

As a Finnish SF from the late 80s and early 90s, I salute the Brits. You guys got a shortest draw to come to the arctic to learn, but damn... you beat the FFL, which I thought would've toughed it out better than any. The runner up was US Marine Force Recon. And the US SOF units were top notch as well, but Finland is unforgiving. Hear me, Ratface Putin?

Well you are right on that one , but it is about the meaning of KSK: Kommando Spezial Kräfte -> it literally means comando special forces. There you are , just a little translation help there and things are much more clear ^^. i just did not see anyone else say that and i assume that is because most ppl think it is just that obvious, yet i thought clarifying would be good, because i get this question a lot actually.

The KSK means Komando Spezial Kräfte , Special Force Command its an Force like the Rangers , Green Berrets , Roayal Marine Commandos , SAS and so on.,myself was in the troops from 89-97 as a grenadier 6.PzGrenBtl32 on the anti-tank mortar (dismounted and mounted) and the training was hard, when fighting was dismounted the base plate weighed about 65 kg and the entire equipment of the mortar had to be placed about 800 m into the firing position of 4 Comrades are brought, a hard work for everyone. So the training here is called peanut but even at the KsK it is harder than it seems.I want to ask you as KZfaqr , Have you been a soldier yourself to be able to give a correct opinion? Opinions very greatly from civilians. Don't misunderstand. I worked 17 Years for the British Forces Germany in Hameln , 28.EngrRgt.as well and ive seen SAS and Royal Marines talked to them , and they always sayed the Germans work Hard and willing to achieve the training goal, but never alone and always in a group, no matter what type of weapon unit it is.

@@domcloud808 It´s easy. A Zentner comes from latin word centum. So it´s basically just a hundred times a base weight. Switzerland and Austria define a Kilogram as base, so a Austrian/Swiss Zentner is 100kg. In Germany a pound (German Pfund = 500g) is set as base weight, so a German Zentner is 50kg.

I remember seeing this video, and I'm so glad I did not even try to make it to KSK, I knew that I'm not making it and when I saw the documentation about 1) Pre-Selection 2) Hell-Week and 3) Parts of the whole training - damn you have to fuck your body. Sadly, they are not used in their full capacity. These boys, they could storm Moscow and put Putin into cuffs, but our government is still anxious about the whole WW2 crap and how the world sees us. And btw, there are even outside Soldiers from i.e. Denmark who joined the KSK. You have to check out the other documentaries. THIS year, after so many years AFTER the Cold War stopped, we are officially able to have a real army. Before that, they had to cut the military with man and equipment to an amount of X, because people outside Germany feared, we could build up a real army and invade them again. Putin now made it possible, to finally build a real army again. That is something you have to consider when you hear Trumps idiotic "Germany is not spending 3% into his military" bullshit. We were not allowed to do that. Now on the other hand, we can and have to change the image of our army, so people will join it freely. Putin did that btw. When the red army was in their lowest, end 90s, young boys injured themselves, cut or shot parts of their feet off, just to NOT be drafted. Putin change the image and made it look awesome to join (which, was a great lie btw) and young soldiers stood in lines to join in mid 2000s. We have to do the same. Fuck the Woke crap, why is our Bundeswehr Ad full of Woman and Lesbians, who say "oh the life as a soldier is so nice" - you are soldiers dammit, show your damn war face.
