10:31 The hats are not vegan though, it was proposed and experimented with so far as I know. They are made from Canadian black bears, because they have to cull them yearly anyway, so 100 skins are sent to the Royal Guard to use each year. They can simply not make one that doesn't get to heavy in rain. As a spokesman said in 2020: "We have examined various alternative materials in the past, but none has come remotely close to matching the natural properties of bear fur in terms of shape, weight and its ability to repel moisture in wet conditions." I only know this because the Danish Royal Guard also use Canadian black bear surplus skin, and the Tivoli Guard also use them. Though would add each cap do have a lifespan of 20 years, so they are only replacing them at a slow rate to mach that. And again the bears need to be shot anyway so why not use the skin.

The reason for the hat's, is to protect their heads, when get shot at, the gun man will aim at the heads, the Royal Grenadier Guards hat's will confuse where the head is. So it helps at times, hope this helps. Also, it's a regiment in the British Army if anyone did not know.

The Bearskin is ceremonial in the same way as HMS Victory firing a broadside at special events. HMS Victory represents Nelson and the Royal Navies victory at Trafalgar and supremacy at sea over the French and her allies. We broke the best unit of heavy infantry in the world at that time, using clever deployment and a modern ambush by Grenadiers. We did take the Bearskin (off the imperial French) and it's a fine trophy.

The chain link "chin strap" or "nose strap" is actually an old defensive measure to prevent cavalry sabre's from cutting the face if the soldiers were facing a head on cavalry charge, not to prevent the hat from breaking their neck. This is the reason why it's so thick and not under the chin.

@TheIrishTexan
@TheIrishTexan 2 жыл бұрын
While it doesn't work on everyone, there is some practical, tactical application for those funky helmets. Thanks to a combination of the weird strap placement, the obscuring of the wearer's eyes, and the disproportionate height of the helmet, from a distance it can be hard to tell where all of the head is, and someone going for a headshot might just hit empty hat fluff. Breaking up the standard human silhouette can be a good tactic to reduce the risk of shots to vital areas.

Pretty sure taunting the guards has been a thing tourists do for at least several decades, well prior to cell phones. Getting a reaction was a dare. People standing in their way . . . I think a lot of that is also deliberate.

The hats are still used as in the oldern times it was to make the enemy think that they r taller and bigger than they really are (which is why they still have them)

"fainting to attention" ...not sure if it's in this video, or if it's even true, but in some other video about royal guard, they mentioned the royal guard actually gets some training on how to faint properly, so they actually do end up lying on the ground in the attention posture.

4:48 I'm SO glad my sister and I never thought to do any such stupidity the many times we visited London (my parents taught us better than that, thankfully!) I'd actually found out more about this when I was diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) and it's a condition...disease...whatever...and it basically leads first to an elevated heart rate upon standing. This is actually natural to an extent...it stops being natural and enters problematic territory when instead of going down after a minute or 2, it only keeps going up. This then leads to orthostatic hypotension (at least in my type of POTS...less force when blood circulates = by itself can cause syncope and is worse if there's a slowing of circulation, blood pooling etc) and to hypoperfusion of the brain (blood circulation/return to the brain slows down, lessens as the blood begins to pool in the legs which I mentioned.) When not in a flare up, if I stand too fast I'll have my vision go grey and sparkly for a second or even a full black (with tinnitus starting in my ears or a muting of all sound). If I am up and walking for too long, then I need to sit with my head between my knees. When I have flare ups, I've had such little perfusion that I've had no palpable pulse at the carotid (no cardiac arrest but there was such little strength to the BP that it could not be found there.) Fainting is actually a natural "solution" as it gets your body into a horizontal positions, ends what the body considers "stress" and ta-da! Blood begins reaching the brain again. At my worst point, I had to be on constant infusions of IV saline solution. So much respect for the Royal Guard.

The two girls who kissed the guard in their video actually asked him if they could first and he nodded. But yes, people shouldn't do that anyway.

4:18 there's something about the way this guy falls that makes me think he wasn't _really_ passing out, he went down knees first and had his arms out to cushion the fall, it just doesn't quite look involuntary.

The thing is a lot of these tourists really don’t understand who and what the royal guard are. I’m sure they don’t even think there actual servicemen.

The British grenadier was wearing bearskin hats since about 1760. The only difference is the fur use to be brushed upwards rather than down like it is now and the design is different.

FYI to anyone watching the video, the hats are still made of real bear. They tried synthetic but it looked awful and the black dye ran very quickly. But the bears are culled by the Canadians and those bear skins are used, the culling is good for the bears as a whole.

I read stories of wee lassies who show the guards their.....wears....to try to break their attention. The guards say they just try to keep their composer and enjoy the view. It's good to be the Queen's Guard.
