This week I will talk about the key mistake that prevented me from landing a royale grind - shoulder position. It took me around 7 months of aggressive inline skating to land a consistent royale. I hope this trick will help the others that are suffering the same :D
Today I was riding on Razors SL Dereck Henderson pro boots with AxyzS frames.
Great detailed videos on how to land the royale:

One more tip: try to look too the end of the obstacle. Don't look at your feet. This wil help you hold your grind longer. Works with every grind.

It kind of works for me, but not always :) I spent a lot of time focusing on it, but I think it only works when you lock on your grinds without really thinking about it. While you are building muscle memory you still have to take a peek at where are you landing, and only then you can focus on "where are you going" :)

This tip worked really well for me, thank you so much! I started to jump into the royale rotating more toward fakie and that puts my shoulders and legs in a better position to avoid wheel bite. It feels much more natural too...

Cant wait to try this. I feel like also being comfortable jumping on with two feet at the same time and getting good squat stength helps as well as looking at the end of the obstacle. If you look at your feet, you almost always fall.

@@VandKoala Hey it worked!!!Focusing on that angle and shoulder position gave me the confidence every time. Got 3 or 4 to slide a couple feet on angle iron ledge. I also added a step. When locking the grind I lean into big toe of front foot and pinky toe of back foot. It really helps. I think getting this trick dialed is the key to getting confident more with topside. I see the path. Gonna keep working on it. Thanks again!!!

Back in the day I progressed so much past some really basic tricks. I could do an ally opp fishbrain before I could do a frontside. You might think that's crazy but I've always hated frontside they look so terrible, royale's look amazing though one of my favourites especially backside.

This is the 1 trick i want to learn so bad. Iv recently got back into skating at 35. And learning grinds all over again. When i was 16 i fractured my arm trying royale and the fear has stuck with me since . Stuggling to try them again

and i completely agree with you, looking pros doing royale helped me very little. they are missing beginner tips or just don't teach, but showing off... best to learn with someone who is also learning. Also would you recommend to start with antis or it isn't big deal compare to aeons? thanks again
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 3 жыл бұрын
Aeons are not bad, but they are not easiest ones to land the royales - the H block is not super tall, but not shallow either. When I landed my first royales on kaizer fluid 4 or flt3 I could not land on aeons. Now I do not see that much difference - can land on either. If you can get kaizer fluid IV- give them a try. One of the lowest H blocks. If it will strech your wallet - stick to aeons. FLT3 are also very close. You can try and loosen the back legs’ buckle by a tooth or two to get the boot down easier as well.

Yeah mate, I don’t know why it took me like 7 months to figure it out :) despite that just had a great buttock slam on the same ledge on royale. Shifted my weight way too muh forwards, wheels started rolling on the top of the ledge and I fell with my butt on the edge and then down on my back, glad I had a helmet, butt will heal up 😂

will try, goes hard that one... so shoulders same position more or less as front side? like parallel to the ledge and not rotated for looking where you are going, but more flat or even facing a bit to the opposite side like fakie? and what about the weight is it 50-50, or more on some leg? I was thinking to land more on the front leg, as i slide and ass kiss the floor as my weight slips away from me and legs shoot forwards :/
@VandKoala
@VandKoala 3 жыл бұрын
First of all - I know it is super frustrating trick - spent so much time on my butt :D keep at it - you will get it for sure. Keep shoulders parallel to the obstacle. The rear hand should stay at the rear. You can turn your head towards the grind direction, but keep the shoulders at least parallel. It will actually allow you to have your legs further apart and this will make sure you don’t slip out. It feels very awkward at first, but when you just slide those first centimeters you start to trust the sliding sideways thing :) Honestly - I do not think too much about the front leg - it is just being somewhere there. It probably has 40-50% weight 🙄 Try landing really wide stance. If you are too wide - you will probably result in frontside. Then go a bit narrower until you find the widest stance that you can land boot-down and not slip out. Shoulders will help with it. Let me know if it helps. You can film one with your phone, maybe on slowmo and send me on insta

Bend your knees and go lower, your grind will be faster, more stylish and it will be easy to hold your balance. Body weight must be mainly on the back leg front leg 9s just for support. This is how you do easy switches between grinds as the front leg is pretty much free to go anywhere.
