It's it necessary to end our threads this way for the Royal Rows method? I'm not keen on it and would rather run my trails under the stitches when I can

So if the thread is almost ending, you would instead "park" the thread past the east tower (3rd column) rather than "park" it in the dungeon?

I would say yes, as ending horizontally to the right sets it up to be anchored more easily by the later stitches. If you think about your stitching on the back, they form vertical lines which cover the anchored thread.
